Empire Season 3 to Feature a Double Dose of Cookie and Lucious

Is Empire big enough for two Cookies?!

In a telltale sign that the Fox drama plans to spend more time exploring their lead characters’ origin stories in Season 3, producers are searching for an African-American actor and actress to play “Teenage Loretha” (aka Cookie) and “Teenage Lucious,” respectively. It’s not clear exactly what age the young couple will be, but, per the casting notice, candidates should be “18 to play younger.”

In its first two seasons, Empire regularly flashed back to Cookie and Lucious’ early years as twentysomethings but it did so with portrayers Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard. This will mark the first time we will see Cookie and Lucious played by other actors.

Teen Cookie is described as a “beautiful but innocent Catholic schoolgirl,” while Teen Lucious already “possesses an incredible voice and his own sense
of style.”

Last August, Empire co-creator Lee Daniels announced his intention to develop a spinoff centered on Cookie’s upbringing in North Philadelphia, but it’s unclear if this recent casting news is connected to those plans.  “Here Cookie is now, but how did she get to where she’s at right now?” he shared. “Let’s go back and understand her mother, her sisters…. Let’s understand the makings of her…  It’d be like a prequel.”

Production on Empire‘s Season 3 premiere, titled “Light in Darkness,” begins next month in Chicago.

    Less Lucious please,lol

No to spin off – why is it that these networks think because a show is successful we want more of the same. I wouldn’t mind learning about what brought these two together but in all honesty I don’t want it to be the central story line.

Watch Netflix it stays the same..
      Stop watching these television shows..
Empires is probably looking for younger viewers and then next season tie it all in together thus bringing the younger (Facebook, tweet etc) and older viewers together, thus making more viewers.

I’d like a lot LESS Cookie, not more!

I’m fine with Empire as long as it features the name that was used to promote show in the first place. That name was Taraji P. Henson and she has never failed to deliver or keep viewers locked in. She deserved to be highest paid on tv! Her marketing plan for number one movie ‘No Good Deed’ was even used to promote the show. We don’t need another version of Taraji. We just need her featured and extremely well-paid without sexist harassment from costars or industry execs. If they are not properly rewarding her efforts, I hope she uses her new book to put them on blast. We will not tolerate a repeat of Person of Interest, who she featured her less and killed her off after launch of show. The execs felt a black woman wouldn’t have international appeal. We all know the POI execs and actors have friends over at fox. Too bad if they have egg on their faces over how they treated her at POI. We won’t tolerate anything less than the best for her now.

    • AB says:

Oh get over yourself. Henson’s character was NOT disrespected on POI. Her character’s death served the story, for one thing, and was always meant to be a short-term arc, for another, and last, Henson needed to fulfill her obligation to POI in order to start working on Empire. No conspiracy at work, no one out to get Henson.
And please, stop with the “we” crap” – you’re only speaking for yourself.

We saw what happened to Nichole Behari on Sleepy Hollow which happens to be on the same network. Trust me, many are watching wth vigilant eyes. The ratings will drop like a lead balloon if there are any signs of Taraji beig sidelined.

  5. This better not be a ploy to sidestep Taraji P. Henson in efforts to pander to industry naysayers who feel African American women shouldn’t be upfront. Many have noticed a constant undertone of Taraji being nagged by Daniels and fox, after she built the dang show. If Taraji’s happy and being treated extremely well, then fine. If not, then fox will have have a major problem. We will not allow Taraji to again be punished for her excellence as she was with POI/CBS.

S1 was excellent because they focused on the major characters and wrote extremely well for Taraji Henson who gave the show the big boost it needed. I am still quoting Cookie one-liners from S1.
S2 was a disappointment to me because the writers attempted to do some backstories but the storylines were poor and most importantly they failed to write well for Cookie, the main draw of their show. I am not particularly excited about this idea of writing Cookie and Lucious backstories because for one thing, the writing in S2 was not impressive and secondly, I want to see Taraji on the screen doing her thing and not sidelined by another actress playing young Cookie. Empire writers need to step up their game in S3 because they lost their magic in S2.
All these plotlines all over the place without any satisfactory resolve does not do their writing any good.
Taraji Henson aka “Cookie” should remain the main star of the show. She knows how to act and delivers well.
