NCIS LA New Showrunner

NCIS: L.A. Creator Shane Brennan Steps Down as Showrunner

CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles will be in new, good hands come Season 8.

Having served as showrunner since siring the NCIS spinoff back in 2009, Shane Brennan (photo, left) is stepping down to focus on developing new projects as part of a two-year extension of his deal with CBS TV Studios.

Among the shows Brennan has been developing is a TV adaptation of the movie franchise The Expendables, currently being shopped around.

Taking over as NCIS: LA showrunner, our sister site Deadline reports, is R. Scott Gemmill, Brennan’s longtime No. 2 and an executive producer since Day 1. He also has written more than 30 of the offshoot’s 160 episodes. Gemmill’s pre-NCIS: LA credits include The Unit, ER and JAG.

NCIS: Los Angeles returns for Season 8 this fall, now airing Sundays at 8/7c, leading into Madam Secretary and then Elementary.

At first glance, this looks like it should be a fairly seamless transition. I sure hope so.

  2. Kevin K says:

The showrunner change won’t hurt the new season of NCIS: LA now that is moving to Sundays @ 8 this Fall.

    • KLS says:

What does one have to do with the other? Just curious.

    • The new showrunner won’t hurt NCIS: LA, but Sunday Night Football sure will! I imagine this will be the last year for both Elementary and NCIS: LA, which makes me sad, because I enjoy them both, especially Elementary. And Sam and Callen have more chemistry than most couples on TV :).

  3. Shaun says:

Good, now maybe some unnecessary characters can go away.

  4. BW says:

I actually don’t think this is a big deal. Gemmill and JPK have been doing most of the heavy lifting for a while.

  5. Weezy says:

The Unit…now that was a show. Believable things that can actually be pulled off by disciplined and well trained elite soldiers. Not the BS that is NCIS LA where they are stopping a nuke every 5 seconds…what a joke

  6. 8pm Sundays is a killer, especially in the fall as they’ll be up against Sunday Night Football. As long as CBS knows they won’t be seeing NCIS: LA in the Top 10 in the fall, the show will survive.
