Time Traveling Bong

Time Traveling Bong: Comedy Central's Thrillogy Is an Instant Holiday Classic

Comedy Central’s Time Traveling Bong feels, at times, like the glorious love child of Broad City and The Wizard of Oz. (Just think of Ilana Glazer as Dorothy and Paul W. Downs as Toto. Also, the Tin Man is a bong.)

Starring Glazer and Downs as bickering cousins Sharee and Jeff, the first installment in the thrillogy — the second and third parts air Thursday and Friday at 10:30/9:30c — introduced a mystical bong which, with a single puff, can transport its users into the past. The initial mythology (“smoke once to travel, smoke again to return”) was simple.

But because neither time travel nor bongs are ever as “simple” as they initially appear, the glassy eyed cousins inadvertently found themselves in the heat (so to speak) of the Salem Witch Trials — which is to say nothing of their near-death experience with an angry T-rex upon their first toke. (For the record, I’m only assuming the T-rex was angry. And understandably so.)

Within minutes of Sharee and Jeff landing in Salem, a mob of angry villagers destroyed the sacred bong (aka “filthy witch” Sharee’s tiny cauldron), forcing Jeff to seek a “quickie blowjob” from the local glassblower. I’m a sucker for a good pun, so that whole scene was a damn delight from start to, ahem, finish.

Following a few drinks, a bit of dancing and a whole lot of public ridicule (that last part was all on Sharee), the cousins managed to smoke their way out of Salem — and without a moment to spare, considering the villagers were already collecting firewood for Sharee’s public burning — but immediately found themselves up against an even trickier foe: cave men! Dun, dun, dun…

As a big fan of Broad City I wasn’t sure what to expect from this show but I had such a good time watching. Ilana Glazer was once again a standout.

Also a big fan of Broad City, but I was sort of disappointed in this show. Maybe I was missing Abbi.
