Marvel's The Defenders Pits Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist Versus 'Their Biggest Threat Yet'

The Defenders team is taking shape.

Marco Ramirez and Douglas Petrie, the showrunners for Season 2 of Marvel’s Daredevil, have been tapped to serve as showrunners for Marvel’s The Defenders, the Netflix mini-series event that will bring together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist “to face their biggest threat yet,” reports.

Drew Goddard, whose credits include Alias, Lost and Marvel’s Daredevil, will also serve as an executive producer.

“We’re incredibly excited to be able to bring our four street-level heroes together in an epic tale woven by Doug and Marco, whose work on Marvel’s Daredevil speaks for itself,” Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb said in a statement. “They write and produce not only great action and adventure, but also the heart and touch of humor that’s makes us Marvel.”

Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter and Finn Jones will reprises their Netflix/Marvel-verse roles as Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand for the mini.

Marvel’s Daredevil Season 2 released on March 18, Marvel’s Luke Cage is set to debut Sept. 30 and Marvel’s Jessica Jones was renewed for Season 2 in January. Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones was officially announced as the lead of Marvel’s Iron Fist on March 17.

  1. Kate says:

There is this part of me that thinks the threat is actually Daredevil. Like he comes in defense of Elecktra or something and just goes dark side at least to Foggy and Karen’s minds.

  2. Brian says:

    Can’t wait for this!

  3. Evil Elektra is going to lead an army of ninjas to attack Hell’s Kitchen and it will be up to The Defenders to stop her.

  4. Mr PBH says:

    …Daredevil Season 3???

  5. Michelle says:

Too bad I’ll be skipping the white washed Iron Fist but I can’t wait for the others!

    • Jordan Strummer says:

I don’t think you know what whitewashing means. Iron Fist has always been white so them hiring a white actor is….not a big deal. Now if a white guy was hired for Luke Cage, that would’ve been whitewashing

      • Michelle says:

He shouldn’t have been a white character in the first place tbh.

        • Jordan Strummer says:

It all depends on the story. A big part of Iron Fist is him sort of being a man with no home since he doesn’t feel accepted where he came from but doesn’t fit in here. And Marvel has said that the show will deal with the fact that he’s white head on and show what that means for him

        • Ash says:

Why don’t you go read the comic I stead of trying to force racial perception ideas on a character who doesn’t need it. Marvels make a show for Shang-chi show if the want an Asian kungfu superhero show.

        • e. says:

Um… he’s literally a white trope. That’s who the character is. He’s also secondary to his best friend who he takes commands from Luke Cage. Which should be interesting because there aren’t a lot of shows where the minority is in charge of a white hero… actually this would be the first. But if the character being who he is makes you want to forget the first major female character, first major minority character, and first disabled character… then bully to you!

        • Malcolm Mao says:

Michelle, you’re so silly. YOU shouldn’t have been a white character in the first place. Blame it on typecasting. I can’t wait to see who will play you in the remake (sorry, you think my comment makes no sense? read yours again and tell me which one is crazier. Also, read a comic. That will prevent you from making inane pseudo-sociological comments like this. Go have a good day).

          • Michelle says:

Read a summary of that crap and yeah, same ol white guy comes into an Asian country and he’s made out to be the ” hero” and the Asian characters are supporting characters.

Like I said, I’ll pass on the Iron Fist series.

        • I agree with you 100%, but since he wasn’t, it’s not whitewashing. I was halfway on board with them hiring an Asian actor for the role, but that would’ve been a double standard. In truth, Comics so very stupidly ignored minorities in the early days. Now that it’s the future, they’re scrambling for minority heroes and the well is almost dry.

          • Marvel had four ongoing martial arts strips in the ’70s. They were Shang-Chi, Master Of Kung Fu, who was Asian, Iron Fist, who was white, The Sons Of The Tiger, who were white, black and Asian, and The White Tiger, who was Puerto Rican.

            They were trying.

And if Marvel doesn’t have a Shang-Chi show on deck, I’ll be very surprised.

        • Joe Manning says:

You don’t seem to know anything about the character and seem to be getting judgmental about it just for the sake of being judgmental and claiming racism on something that is not racist at all. Do you know ANYTHING about Danny Rand? Saying he should never have existed in the first place….for what reason? Because a white man shouldn’t be portrayed as being a master of Kung fu? I guess Doctor Strange shouldn’t exist, either. FFS….

You just seem desperate to be offended by something. You moved the goal-post once someone mentioned he was white to begin with, changing your stance further so as to continue to claim offense over something that isn’t offensive. You’re ridiculous.

        • tvjunkie says:

Actually Michelle you’re a racist for stereotyping a show called Iron Fist as being about an Asian characer

    • Matt says:

Iron Fist isn’t whitewashed; he’s been a Caucasian character since he first appeared over 40 years ago.

    • emprater says:

Don’t be foolish the character has always been white, why be draen into unecessary politics? Have any people of asian descent complained of missing a chance to racebend a character so they can get to play another kung fu practitioner?

  6. clintbrew says:

i wonder if jessica wears her jewel outfit or gets her clothes/costume upgraded by melvin potter and claire becomes Nightnurse and kingpin/the hand villian team up and the defenders get help from the punisher

    • DrGonzo137 says:

Night nurse isn’t coming around until Doctor Strange is released. Rachel McAdams will be playing her.. The showrunners wanted to use her but Marvel Studios basically said “Nope. We may or may not have already made plans for Night Nurse in our cinematic universe…….

  7. Luli says:

So JJ season 2 will come out after The Defenders? In what 2 years?? I hope not, cause that is too damn long.

    • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

No one said any such thing . Any known premiere dates are denoted above.

    • Dj says:

I agree that is way to long. But it does feel like it might be a two year wait because Defenders has to shoot by a certain time, contractually. At least thats what JJ showrunners were saying. I would love it if marvel would put out 4 shows a year instead of the 2. That way the wait between season wouldn’t be so long.

  8. Jason says:

I’m hoping that the producers of the other three shows are also heavily involved since they are the ones that will have helped build their respective identities. Especially as it relates to Jessica. The strong female driven voice that runs through every element of that show needs to be nurtured as it migrates to Defenders. Otherwise she may stop sounding like the Jessica we know.

  9. Cris says:

I think the villain is going to be the corp that Jessica was looking into (the one that was maybe involved in giving her her powers). I also feel that they had something to do with Matt and Luke getting their powers as well. It’s all connected.

  10. MariaD says:

After completing season 2 of DD, that was overstuffed with plot at the expense of characters, with too many villains and a loss of the dark humour that characterized season 1, I’m not so sure I’m exactly thrilled that Ramirez and Petrie have been tapped as the showrunners for The Defenders. I hope the storyline is tighter and more disciplined, the humour back, and we have a chance to be with, and learn about, the characters we’ve learned to love through years of comic book fandom.

  11. Patrick Maloney says:

I think the villain will be a combination of a threat from each show. Since we don’t know what threat Luke Cage and Iron Fist will introduce, I’m guessing Bullseye will team up with the group that Nuke/Will Simpson was a part of.

    • Matthew says:

Luke Cage will introduce Cottonmouth and Mariah Dillard AKA Black Mariah(yes, that is the REAL name of her alter ego). Iron Fist will introduce Silver Samurai who was hinted in season 1 of DD.

  12. Rachel says:

can we just have a Punisher series too so my life can be more complete.

  13. Lisa says:

I’m looking forward to this, but I’m hoping this will be treated like an ensemble show and not Daredevil season 3.

  14. Wow, this article tells us absolutely nothing about what the headline teased.

  15. Mike says:

Where’s Misty Knight. Yeah that is only thing that will keep away from the show long term. ..
