Doctor Who Spinoff Cast

Doctor Who Spinoff Cast Revealed: Katherine Kelly to Teach Coal Hill Class

UK TV vet Katherine Kelly is set to teach the Class at the center of Doctor Who‘s upcoming spinoff, which is being likened to a “British Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

Set in contemporary London at Coal Hill School, Class is described as “scary, funny and as painful and sharp as youth,” shining a light on “a whole new corner of the Whoniverse.” Kelly (Coronation Street, Happy Valley, Mr. Selfridge) will play a teacher and powerful new presence at the school, while (left to right, photo above) Vivian Oparah, Greg Austin (Mr. Selfridge), Sophie Hopkins and Fady Elsayed (Silent Witness) have been cast as students who will face “their own worst fears, navigating a life of friends, parents, school work, sex, sorrow… and possibly the end of existence.”

Per the BBC America write-up, “All the time traveling over the years has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin. There’s something pressing in on the other side, something waiting for its chance to kill everyone and everything, to bring us all into Shadow.”

Says Doctor Who/Class EP Steven Moffat, “Coal Hill School has been part of Doctor Who since the very first shoot in 1963, but this new show is anything but history. Class is dark and sexy and right now. I’ve always wondered if there could be a British Buffy, and it’s taken the brilliant Patrick Ness to figure out how to make it happen.”

Production on Class begins this week, its BBC Three launch date TBD.

See how it shakes out. Who spin-offs have varied in quality but given how vast the universe is they’re kind of inevitable.

  2. ltz says:

So Moffat has been part of Doctor Who since he was 2 years old? Really? how about some fact checking….

  3. kirads09 says:

Only spinoff I truly want is River Song – all the time. Or for HER to be the new “companion” although she is really his equal – and wife!

  4. Simon Jester says:

Sounds somewhat dubious — the “teens save the world” genre is not a favorite — but The Sarah Jane Adventures was so very good that I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

  5. Bob Backus says:

In the era of easy access DVDs, instant streaming of TV shows, isn’t anyone tired of the same old thing? You actually don’t need a British Buffy- you have the actual Buffy. X “is dark and sexy and right now.” sounds like a quote from some greasy haired, pathetic show runner who’s run out of creativity years ago. He’s the caricature you see on every show about TV producers i.e. Episodes, Beggars and Choosers. “It’s hip, it’s now!”

    • J says:

Not saying your wrong here, but you want to tell me what isn’t the same old thing these days? Because most everything is. Expecting anything new and original is expecting a lot.

    • ScottJ says:

Moffat is the Executive Producer. That’s all. He has nothing to do with the concept, and he’s not the show runner – a position which barely exists outside the US anyway.

  6. 5-by-5 says:

If had a dime for every time the next gen Buffy is announced…

  7. Simon says:

Wow Katherine Kelly from Corrie, I was always interested in this show but now I am really interested! She is a terrific actress.

  8. Have been watching Dr. Who for over 20 years. This new spin off can not fail because it can not be possible worst than the current 2016 version of D.W. Worst season ever anywhere in time and space.

  9. I guess you can put the name Doctor Who on anything. Have to see it to understand how it fits

  10. SAM L says:

Is she going to teach them to act? Because those kids were horrible in Doc Who.

  11. Dr. M says:

Description reminds me a bit of the first season of Torchwood.
Besides, I want an Amy & Rory spin-off. Then Arthur Darvill can stop chewing scenery in Legends of Tomorrow.

  12. Lin Davis says:

Good to see something coming from the BBC. Don’t understand the delay since it sounds like Doctor Who is done filming.
