The CW's Riverdale Pilot Casts Newbie as Gay Student Kevin Keller

Another fresh face is calling Riverdale home.

Newcomer Casey Cott — brother of Broadway star Corey Cott (Newsies) — has been cast in The CW’s Archie comics-inspired drama pilot.

Cott will play Kevin Keller, the first openly gay character in the Archie universe, who was introduced in the comic-book series in 2010.

EP Roberto Aguirre Sacasa (Supegirl, Looking) announced the news via Twitter.

Riverdale, which hails from writer Aguirre Sacasa and über-producer Greg Berlanti, is described as a “subversive” take on the famous characters and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.

The ensemble for the potential series includes newcomers KJ Apa and Camila Mendes as Archie and Veronica, respectively; Surviving Jack‘s Lili Reinhart as Betty; Cole Sprouse (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) as Jughead; Luke Perry (Beverly Hills, 90210) as Archie’s dad, Fred Andrews; Marisol Nichols (Teen Wolf) as Veronica’s mom, Hermione Lodge; and Madchen Amik (The Witches of East End) as Betty’s mom Alice Cooper.

KJ Apa is hardly a newcomer. He’s done nearly 50 episodes of the soapy Shortland Street.

  2. chadcronin says:

First CW Pilot in a while that sounds good. Definitely want a gay character in this!

    “Gay Student Kevin Keller”

Dude – spoilers. Don’t ruin the fun for people watching Veronica hit on him and come up empty, let them figure it out as the rest of the gang does.

    • Annie says:

It was so widely advertised before the comic book started that Kevin was gay. How can anyone think this is a spoiler.

  4. QueenB says:

If and when this show premieres I’ll give it a chance, watch three or four episodes, before making my final decision.

  5. Annie says:

Oh I’m glad they’re using Kevin!

  6. Flashrow says:

Probably a gay character without no relevant gay storyline or a dead-soon boyfriend. it looks like that’s the CW standard for gay men
