Cole Sprouse to Play Jughead in CW's Archie Pilot Riverdale; Betty Also Cast

The cast of The CW’s Archie comics-inspired Riverdale is looking suite.

Former Disney Channel star Cole Sprouse — best known for playing Cody Martin in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody (2005–2008) and The Suite Life on Deck (2008–2011) — has been cast as Jughead, our sister site Deadline reports. Riverdale’s Jughead Jones is Archie’s former best friend; their de-friending remains a sore subject between them.

(There’s no word yet on whether Riverdale‘s Judghead will be asexual, as revealed in a recent Archie comic, though his initial character breakdown states that he could be hearing-impaired.)

Sprouse promptly celebrated the news of his casting on Twitter:

Additionally, Surviving Jack‘s Lili Reinhart will play Betty Cooper, an all-American gal with a big ol’ crush on the pilot’s yet-to-be-cast leading man. But when Betty grows tired of being so perfect, she turns to her also-uncast bestie Veronica for help.

Riverdale, which hails from über-producer Greg Berlanti, is described as a “subversive” take on the famous Archie comic series, exploring the comic book characters’ seemingly idyllic town.

  1. The CW seems to be the place were all former Disney stars (albeit the D-listers) go…

  2. Lola says:

Yikes. I’m not sure about that casting choice. It’s bad enough they’re ruining my childhood.

    • Patrick says:

So, basically, they are taking what everybody loved about Archie and just taking a big deuce on it? This will a quick death midway through shooting the pilot. Just make it a comedy for chrissake.

    • Lizzy says:

Actually current Archie comments are kind of weird and don’t really deal with the old school subjects like the cartoons or old school comics. Did you know there was even an Afterlife with Archie with is just a zombie apocolypse comic. Which if this show turns into that I will be insanely happy because that comic was great.

  3. madison says:

Is it just me or does Berlanti have too many eggs in too many baskets?

  4. rcb918 says:

Ye, not sure how I feel about Cole Sprouse being cast as Jughead, but I’m really hoping he’s asexual. It’s a sexual identity rarely dealt with in television and would be a nice change of pace. It could also give them some fertile ground to work with.

  5. Robin says:

    Oh no…

  6. Max says:

I think one of the Carver twins would be perfect as leading man Archie.

  7. Ian says:

Is this the one with the “leaked” nude selfies? Or was it the other twin?

  8. kizzylyn says:

I am very upset with their choice on casting, Cole is not a good actor and this show will just down spiral because I can tell how 2000 cheesy feeling it will have.

  9. Esther says:

although I love Jughead as he is
because his laid back character is just so cool
I’d still like to see him with Betty more than anyone else if at all he has to date some girl.

  10. tsevca says:

It would be great if they portraid asexual character. They make such a big fuss to have a certain percentage of homosexual characters, but as far as I know, there have only been one asexual – Voodoo. And it was WB, who made the big progress in portraining homosexual couples in Buffy, so if it was on CW, it would by symbolical carrying of the torch.
