The CW Boss Talks 'Darker' Archie, Crazy Ex Ratings — Plus, Flash News

If überproducer Greg Berlanti wants to take Archie Andrews and friends to edgier places, so he shall.

The CW president Mark Pedowitz said as much during his appearance at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Sunday, when asked about the network’s script order for the live-action Riverdale, which features a buff, secret-harboring Archie, an Aderall-popping Betty and was detailed by TVLine in November.

When someone as prolific and successful as Berlanti (whose CW projects alone include Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow) offers to deliver a “darker take” on the Archie comics, “you give them that leeway,” Pedowitz said. “They deserve it, they’ve earned it.”

At this early stage, though, Riverdale is still just a script order.

Other topics covered during The CW’s TCA executive session:

* Invited to put the best possible spin on the mediocre ratings-to-date for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (starring Golden Globe nominee Rachel Bloom), Pedowitz… admitted he was unable to. “But we believe in the show, we stand by the show… we’re going to give it a chance to get seen,” he said. “I hope it comes back” for Season 2.

* Speaking of Crazy Ex: Tony winner Lea Salonga will perform during the season finale.

* It was announced that filmmaker and comic book aficionado Kevin Smith (Clerks) will direct a May episode of The Flash.

* Julie Plec’s Containment, which revolves around a viral outbreak in Atlanta, will premiere… this spring.

* Pedowitz said there have been “some discussions” about an America’s Next Top Model retrospective special.

* CW Seed’s animated Vixen (voiced by upcoming Arrow guest star Megalyn E.K. née Megalyn Echikunwoke) has been renewed for a second season.

  1. i so hope cw overlooks the ratings regarding crazy ex girlfriend, it’s such a great show, the best premiere of the season.

  2. “It was announced that filmmaker and comic book aficionado Kevin Smith (Clerks) will direct a May episode of Arrow.” and one-time Green Arrow writer.

Kevin Smith had such potential at one point… before he became a parody of himself.

      • The last movie he made I saw was Red State and I thought it was pretty good. I do wish he had gone with the originally intended ending rather than the one we got. Husk looks interesting and I’d like to check it out someday.

  3. I think Richard Linklater would make a perfect director/show runner for “Riverdale”–he probably wouldn’t want to get involved, but I wish he would.

  4. Riana says:

Looks like Containment has already been contained.

I’m really curious to see what Greg Berlanti and The CW do with Riverdale. I’m not that familiar with the comics but a darker twist could make it kind of cool. I get that Crazy ExGF is critically praised and a fresh take on a comedy but I just don’t get the appeal.

I’m not wild about this potential Archie program, but if it introduces the characters to a new generation of viewers, fair enough. Best of luck to CW on this one – I guess worth a try and consideration.

However, Veronica with purple hair? Aderall-popping Betty? Hmmmm.

I love me some Greg Berlanti, but I just can’t get with this “darker” Archie. Archie is the ONE comic book I read as a kid and it’s going to be ruined if this project gets through.

Here’s hoping this Archie reboot doesn’t become the parody it could possibly end up. I mean, you want to reintroduce something for a new generation, you gotta try and keep with the times. Still, “You know that sweet girl who also happens to be a capable mechanic? Now she’s popping Adderall,” sounds basically like a parody on paper.

  8. Dr. M says:

A darker live action Archive series… requested no one, ever. I watched High School USA. That was enough.

  9. Luli says:

    nothing on the 100?

  10. Come on don’t make us wait until spring for Containment.
