Hayden Panettiere Returns to Nashville

Hayden Panettiere Returns to Nashville Following Medical Leave

Juliette. Barnes. Is. Back.

Nashville‘s Hayden Panettiere — who in October took a leave of absence from the ABC drama to undergo treatment for postpartum depression — has returned to work on the series, TVLine has learned exclusively.

An ABC rep declined to comment, but sources confirm that the actress reported back to the set on Friday to begin work on Season 4’s 14th episode, which is slated to air in April. (Nashville returns from its midseason break on March 16).

Panettiere left the series in early October just as Episode 9 was about to start production. Her character, Juliette — who in an eerie parallel was also battling postpartum depression — was last seen in the Nov. 18 episode.

At the time, executive producer/showrunner Dee Johnson said that she fully expected Panettiere to return.

“It’s not the entire season, it’s just for now,” Johnson told Deadline, adding, “We’ve had to make adjustments, but it’s not uncommon for shows to have to make such accommodations when real life intervenes.”

  1. So glad she’ll be back! I hope she’s feeling much better. The show just lacks something when she’s not there.

  2. Phillip says:

I hope she’s doing better. It’s awesome to have her back!

  3. aph1976 says:

I’m happy that Hayden is returning to Nashville but i hope she’s not rushing things because she wants to get back to work.

    • Z says:

It feels kinda rushed, but she will have all the time she needs in May after the show will be cancelled/ending.

      • Lorna says:

You don’t know that. I predict we will get a final season, but it may be shortened. Then again, this is abc.

      • Gail says:

People have been commenting that Nashville is about to be cancelled since the first season. While all shows eventually end and so one day you will be right, it just seems mean spirited to constantly state this show is about to end.

Glad Hayden is back. I hope Juliet’s fictional Patsy Cline bio is a big hit and that she is nominated for a fictional Oscar.

    • Sarah says:

Hopefully they don’t work her too hard and give her a positive storyline to act out for the rest of the season. No more depressing terrible stuff please.

      • steven says:

There may be depressing stuff since it’ll be hard for Juliette to reconcile with Avery.

        • Isobel says:

True but I do hope they have Juliette returned from therapy having explored some of her issues and they have her and Avery working things out and finding happiness in life together. I know Hayden got the crazy storylines because she could act them best, but it started to get depressing how Juliette always self destructed

        • Sarah says:

I think they will show Juliette overcoming postpartum depression, reconnecting with Cadence and Avery will eventually forgive her. They would be sending a terrible message about PPD otherwise.

  10. Sarah says:

So glad to hear! Get Juliette and Avery back together now please!

    • Desiree says:

I second this! I really enjoy the show usually. The actors do a nice job and the music is great! But this year has been nothing but angst-filled drama for the sake of angst-filled drama.

  11. BetsyBoo says:

all good thoughts to Hayden and her family.

  12. Carol C says:

    Happy news, indeed!

  13. abz says:

So glad she’ll be returning. The show isn’t the same without her. I hope she’s feeling a bit better and then that they eventually have something positive to the writing for her character so its not just one depressing thing after another for her to experience.

  14. Babygate says:

I’ve missed the presence of Juliette this season. Even when she was on screen, she seemed to be absent. And Juliette is my absolute favorite character of the show. However, I do hope Hayden is truly ready for it. Her health and the health of her family are the most important thing.

  15. Valerie says:

This acting business is crazy hard on people. Hayden is a great actress and wish her the very best in life!

  16. char Rogers says:

Happy for her return, this is my favorite show on TV so I hope it is on many more years ,glad Deacon and Reyena is back ,together Looking forward to the Wedding and Hope Julia and avery get things worked out , everyone is amazing so March hurry up and get here

  17. torpian says:

Nashville without Juliette is akin to The Ellen Show without Ellen – to me she makes it great. So glad she’s back.

  18. Arlene says:

Had missed original story, and am so glad to read she is now considered well enough to return to work. She is a truly remarkable young actor and singer. Nashville is written well enough to manage without her for a bit, but no question she is the superstar of this show. Thank you for posting this.

  19. Boiler says:

So great Hayden seems to be doing well and will be fun to have her back on Nashville. Hopefully this is part of what will be a happier second half. If Paul Lee to be believed(50/50 at best) looks like there is another year coming

  20. karenh43 says:

Glad to hear Hayden has recovered from PPD. While it’s not something one would wish on someone, it was successfully worked into the script for her character. Looking forward to her return.

  21. LKE says:

I hate to say this but I’m kind of loving Nashville without Juliette. It’s giving more screen time to other characters

  22. Debi says:

oh no this makes me nervous “It’s not the entire season, it’s just for now,” Johnson told Deadline, adding, “We’ve had to make adjustments, but it’s not uncommon for shows to have to make such accommodations when real life intervenes.” So does this mean she is leaving us?

    • Sarah says:

No, that was what the producer said when Hayden left a couple months ago. She was saying Juliette being off the show was “not for the entire season.”

  23. David says:

Glad she is back. Hopefully she will be the old, spunky and bitchy self too!

    • Nancy says:

Hope that Juliette and Avery work things out and no matter who they pair him with, he can’t get over Juliette and they both grow up and get back together

  24. Mike says:

Remember when the show started and Avery was the biggest jerk around? Now he’s by far the most sympathetic character on the show, especially since Juliette has manipulated him so much.
In real life, welcome back Hayden and being a parent is the best experience you could ever hope for.

  25. Gail Vanmeer says:

I’m so glad shes coming back… I love the show hope it’s going to be on for many more seasons ….

  26. Faith Barr says:

It was an incredibly strange coincidence that what was happening in the writing also played out in her life. I was shocked by that!! She is extremely expressive and has given the world a great gift of understanding ppd from an inside perspective and with such deeply conveyed heart. Best show on television!!!
