Empire Passes Mic to Funkmaster Flex for Season 2 Guest Spot

Empire is bringing in ‘da noise, bringing in ‘da funk — Funkmaster Flex, to be specific — for Season 2.

The hip-hop legend will appear as himself in Episode 8, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Flex, who’s held court as a DJ at New York’s Hot 97 since the early ’90s, will serve as the MC at a rap battle between Hakeem Lyon (Bryshere Gray) and up-and-comer Freda Gatz (newcomer Bre-Z), who makes her debut in the Season 2 premiere (Sept. 23, 9/8c on Fox).

TVLine broke the news of the Freda character — who was originally conceived as Betty Gathers — back in June. She’s described as “unapologetically butch,” and something of a hometown hero in her “Brownsville-Never-Ran-Never-Will, Brooklyn” neighborhood. The daughter of a terrifying drug kingpin (played by guest star Chris Rock), Freda is known for winning“more rhyme battles and girls’ hearts than the best male vets on her block” and for “deep fears that push her toward self-sabotage.”

0 comments after a few hours goes to show—not every one of the 15+ Empire guest castings needs its own story. I know Empire stories get y’all hits, but whoever this is doesn’t seem very significant in this world or Empire’s.

Can’t wait for the new season to begin! The new season will be filled with new characters, celebrities, and fan favorites! I’m pretty meh on Funk Master Flex and Hot 97 but I’ll still watch the episode!👍👍

Funkflex on Empire will solidify his status as a legend. His appearance as himself just proves his impact on hip-hop. I’ll be watching:) I’m from Detroit & I got introduced to Funkflex mixtapes at Grambling University in 1995 from my New York friends. It wasn’t until
live-stream radio on the tune-in app that I could start listening to his show. It upsets me when people say he should step down because of his age. The young rockers like the Foo Fighters pay respect to the Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Even Darryl from Hall & Oats has a show that intertwines the legends & new artist. Every time I listen to his show I hear music I’ve never heard before. The Rolling Stones & Paul McCarthy still tour. His appearance on Empire should silence the haters on his place in hip-hop.
