You can add 6-foot-8, 320-lb. Matthew Willig to Phil Coulson’s sizeable list of Season 3 woes.
The veteran NFL offensive tackle has been cast on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the role of Lash, an Inhuman who, executive producer Jeff Bell tells TVLine, “has a fairly strong opinion about what should happen to Inhumans,” who in the wake of the Season 2 finale (thanks, fish oil supplements!) are “popping up all over the world.”
“What’s nice about him is he’s a wild card,” Bell added during our in-depth Fall Preview Q&A. “You don’t know why he is doing this — Does he have an agenda? Is he on somebody’s side? So we’ll be teasing that out over some episodes.”
In Marvel comics, Lash boasts a, um, unique look (as seen above), so don’t be surprised if you don’t always recognize Willig on screen. “We worked with Glenn Hetrick (The Hunger Games), who we worked with last year on Raina, and he and his team do great work,” Bell notes. “They’ve been working with our makeup effects and visual effects people to come up with something that’s pretty cool!”
Willig’s previous TV acting credits include Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Grimm, an arc on NCIS (as Special Agent Simon Cade) and Chuck.
Agents of SHIELD opens Season 3 on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 9/8c.
