Once Upon a Time Season 5

Once Upon a Time EPs Solve Mystery of 'Familiar' Season 5 Episode Title

Once Upon a Time cocreator Adam Horowitz got fans buzzing when he shared on Twitter the title for the fifth episode of Season 5.

Of course, a dreamcatcher was first spied in the cold open of the ABC series’ Season 2 premiere, which first introduced us to (an unnamed) Neal Cassidy, played by Michael-Raymond James. (Gosh, remember when I did this detailed analysis of his apartment? Good times.) We then of course saw Neal’s dreamcatcher again, midway through that season, when Emma reunited with her first love in (the episode) “Manhattan.”

But it’s different kind of dreamcatcher — like the one that Mr. Gold invited Emma to use one to “see” Archie’s “death” (in Season 2, Episode 10) — that the new title is meant as a nod to. Perhaps the object will again be used in a magical way, maybe in the name of tracking down the newly christened Dark One, Emma?

“Although dreamcatchers evoke and remind us of Neal, they have been used on the show — magically,” cocreator Eddy Kitsis explained to TVLine during our in-depth Fall Preview Q&A. Outside of that, Kitsis shared that “Dreamcatcher” as “a very Emma-centric episode,” though it won’t incorporate any flashbacks to her past.

“The construction [of Season 5A] is different as far as flashbacks go,” Horowitz noted. “But we will be getting an Emma flashback in the early part of the season.”

  1. Val says:

Thought so – Dreamcatcher would be a Emma centric. And i did remember that Emma’s first kinda magic lesson was with Rumple using it on Pongo.

Dreamcatcher in itself has its own meaning and description – it being Flypaper for Nightmares.

And also Emma is basically living with a nightmare inside her – the darkness/dark curse
And its her life was pretty nightmare-rish in the past with what happened and the ppl who left her and broke her heart.

  2. LADY_in_MD says:

The only reason I look forward to fall is because all my shows come back!
Can’t wait for Once to start back up this season looks like it’s going to be good 😀

  3. StephonJS says:

and there goes my hopes of Neal showing up in the shape or form.. oh well :(

    • Val says:

He never was going to. Its been said many times – he is dead. He is dead in the real world – cannot be brought back, Time and time again its been said.
Also MRJ is filming his new series Game of Silence on NBC it seems.

      • Rebecca says:

We’re well aware of that Val, but u have to face that there are people who would of wanted to see him again.

        • Val says:

Sure. But also be aware of how many times the show has told us – NO in seeing him how few ppl want to see him as lol

          • Rebecca says:

Well I would of like them to at least mention him in the episode. I would of wanted Emma to kill Zelena because of what she did to him & that would of triggered Emma to becoming full on DO. Neal gets a shout out & Zelena dies.

          • zumpie says:

Except that isn’t what happened. Greenie didn’t actually kill him, he committed suicide by stupidity. He was warned and he still went ahead. And that wouldn’t have been what triggered Emma to go full on DO, she’s moved past his death (quite quickly, actually) and they hadn’t been together in over a decade.

Emma’s moved on, you should too. It’s all pretend

      • msemmyjones says:

Just because he’s dead doesn’t mean we can’t seem in flash backs, hallucinations, dreams, etc. No need to get so down on people who miss him.

  4. Jennifer says:

The Cricket Game remains one of the best episodes of the series so hopefully this one will be as good. Definitely sounds promising.

  5. Sarah says:

“a very Emma-centric episode,” and “But we will be getting an Emma flashback in the early part of the season.” I’m just so happy to hear these things! I love Emma so much!

  6. Lisa says:

Thanks God(or Adam and Eddie :D) there will be no Neal!
I am so worried about Hook and Emma……

    • Len08 says:

Emma & Hook have got a huge challenge between them with what has happened But the point is to overcome those – that’s what love does and they love each other as we have seen. Challenges and Angst is all part of a love story and overcoming them. True Love and this is a huge massive test for them. They love each other.

  7. So, to clarify, it’s not a crossover with the Stephen King novel? Bummer…

    • Now i want Roland Deschain and Randall Flagg to show up on OUAT! Who is to say one of those doors into other realms of fantasy doesn’t connect to the Dark Tower, right?

  8. Len08 says:

All for Emma centric. I am very glad we getting those. She is the protagonist of this show so her journey I am interested in the most along with her relationships – her parents, and Henry and Hook………….
Dreamcatcher I did think of him but my mind also went to the one she used in magic on Pongo

  9. Michelle Vee says:

Regina has been wearing dream catchers since season 1. Emma and Regina centric much! <3

    • Val says:

And… Its about Emma and her magic which has just been confirmed. Lol. Most of the ppl dont even know about this fanon ship

  10. browneyegurl says:

Maybe Emma being the Dark One would give her insight into how much her boyfriend is a douche and still keeps secrets from her and he is not changed as much she wants to believe because she thinks she has to since he declared that she is her happy ending. She just excuse all he is done, even recently as (it happened in the past). What an apologist our once strong character once was.

    • Brigid says:

Her boyfriend is awesome! Her parents have lied to her and they are suppose to be the good guys. Forgiving people is what the good guys do. If not for the kindness and belief in others how do those who have done wrong get the motivation to change and become better? Emma is living up to her savior name by giving those who have wronged her a second chance to prove themselves. I see nothing weak in her character.

  11. So . . . this is a White Witch episode. I hope, for once, that it’s interesting.

  12. Kitsis has explained that the reason for the season being split differently to previous seasons is to have the 100th episode as the spring premiere as opposed to the winter finale.
