Once Upon a Time cocreator Adam Horowitz got fans buzzing when he shared on Twitter the title for the fifth episode of Season 5.
Of course, a dreamcatcher was first spied in the cold open of the ABC series’ Season 2 premiere, which first introduced us to (an unnamed) Neal Cassidy, played by Michael-Raymond James. (Gosh, remember when I did this detailed analysis of his apartment? Good times.) We then of course saw Neal’s dreamcatcher again, midway through that season, when Emma reunited with her first love in (the episode) “Manhattan.”
But it’s different kind of dreamcatcher — like the one that Mr. Gold invited Emma to use one to “see” Archie’s “death” (in Season 2, Episode 10) — that the new title is meant as a nod to. Perhaps the object will again be used in a magical way, maybe in the name of tracking down the newly christened Dark One, Emma?
“Although dreamcatchers evoke and remind us of Neal, they have been used on the show — magically,” cocreator Eddy Kitsis explained to TVLine during our in-depth Fall Preview Q&A. Outside of that, Kitsis shared that “Dreamcatcher” as “a very Emma-centric episode,” though it won’t incorporate any flashbacks to her past.
“The construction [of Season 5A] is different as far as flashbacks go,” Horowitz noted. “But we will be getting an Emma flashback in the early part of the season.”
