Chicago Med Showrunner Exits

Chicago Med Showrunner Exits

Chicago Med is in need of a new boss, STAT.

Showrunner Andrew Dettmann is exiting the Chicago Fire spinoff before it ramps up production, TVLine has confirmed.

Dettmann, who took the reins at Chicago Med in June, is departing due to creative differences. A replacement has not yet been named, but the NBC series has a robust group of executive producers, including Chicago Fire/PD showrunner Matt Olmstead.

“Andrew Dettmann won’t be continuing as an executive producer on Chicago Med,” NBC and Universal TV said in a joint statement. “The network and studio value their relationship with Andy and plan to continue to work on other projects together.”

Earlier this month, Laurie Holden — who was set to play ER surgeon Dr. Hannah Tramble — parted ways with the series, citing family reasons.

Chicago Med stars S. Epatha Merkerson (Law & Order), Yaya DaCosta (Ugly Betty), Nick Gehlfuss (Shameless), Oliver Platt (Fargo), Colin Donnell (Arrow), Brian Tee (Grimm), Torrey DeVitto (Pretty Little Liars) and Rachel DiPillo (Jane the Virgin). It premieres Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 9/8c.

Not a good sign for Chicago Med. I have a bad feeling this one won’t make it like the other Chicagos.

  2. Martoukian says:

Glad to see they’ve kept Epatha Merkerson (so far).

    • Spignejr says:

How are they going to explain that continuity wise? Chicago Med and Law & Order are set in the same universe. I didn’t see the shows on Chicago Fire. Is she playing the same character?

  3. AP says:

I’ve been keeping up with the news and BTS chatter, and (sadly) this was sort of a long time coming. I’m extremely curious to see who will replace him.

  4. m3rcnate says:

Lead actress who was a solid draw to the series leaves, a day later the show-runner leaves…red flags.

  5. Jo B says:

Please don’t let Warren Leight near it!!!!

  6. joel f says:

Laurie Holden is out… So am I!

  7. kate says:

when everybody seems to be leaving the ship, it almost fells like the ship has sunk before it even sailed….

Not watching Chicago anything; I think it is a time conflict…

  9. Andrew Dettmann should either replace Warren Leight on SVU after he leaves this season or headline the L&O reboot NBC & Dick Wolf keep pressing for. But it’s a possiblity that Tara Butters & Michele Fazekas might go back to SVU if renewed for S18 — Tara said somewhere on Twitter that she’d go back to SVU if asked (besides, a show like SVU should probably be ran by a woman anyway).

As for Chicago Med, they’ve just lost an excellent EP. Matt Olmstead’s okay, but one showrunner juggling THREE of the same shows, I’ve seen writers do this, he’ll start to let one Chi show sag to keep up the others OR he’ll leave one of the other Chicago shows to join Med and Fire or PD’s quality will decline. They need to find someone outside of the Chicago shows, I’d like to see Warren Leight as show runner, but after S17 of SVU he’s done with NBC (unless they offer him a better deal).

And this news is on TOP of Laurie Holden departing the cast. Wolf and NBC better pull out all the stops on this one.

  10. Mark says:

Call a doctor this show is in need of life support. To many shows revolving around a singular theme and everybody’s decided lets bail before we waste 6 months before we are axed and do something more likely to stick around. End this project and invest the funds in the other two Chicago shows —
