Arrow/Flash Spinoff Taps Doctor Who Alum as Time Traveler Rip Hunter

Arrow/Flash Spinoff Rip Hunter Arthur Darvill

The CW’s proposed Arrow/Flash spinoff continues to expand its superhero roster, with Doctor Who’s Arthur Darvill as the latest addition, our sister site Deadline reports.

As TVLine correctly predicted (hey, we’re 1-for-2!), Darvill’s character is Rip Hunter, a roguish time traveler who hides the strains of being responsible for history itself behind a facade of charm and wit.

Rip Hunter is one of three DC Comics figures in the project who have never been portrayed on TV before.

As previously reported, the proposed “team-up” spinoff will also star Arrow‘s Brandon Routh (who plays Ray/The Atom), Caity Lotz (formerly Sara/Canary), The Flash‘s Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein/half of Firestorm), Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Heat Wave) and Pippin actress Ciara Renée as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl.

In addition to playing Rory on Doctor Who, Darvill also starred in Broadchurch and Once on Broadway.

    Love it!

  2. You credited Hawkgirl’s actress wrong. The actress is Ciara Renee, not Kendra Saunders. Kendra Saunders is the character name of Hawkgirl’s alter ego. Ciara is currently playing the role of Esmeralda in Paper Mill Playhouse’s production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

  3. Trading in a TARDIS for a time bubble.

    • And just like no one knows the Doctor’s true name, Rip Hunter isn’t this character real name either. He uses an alias so his enemies don’t go back in time and kill him when he’s defenseless (something Matthew Ryder should have probably thought of as well).

Too bad Liam McIntyre was already on The Flash, or he looks exactly like the comic character in that insert there.

This is getting rediculous. I just want to know how this is going to work!

Wow, when the time traveler character was originally announced it made me think of Captain Jack (also spun off of Dr. Who). Now the actor cast was also on Dr. Who…spooky. I wasn’t planning on watching the Atom spinoff, but I may have to check it out.

    Rory!!!

Nice. Possibly a bit of typecasting, but he will be great. I still wish that Karen Gillan wasn’t tied to Marvel. I would love to see her in the Arrow/Flash universe.
I still predict that Rip will be the center of the story, with the others interacting with him as he travels through time. Caity will be Sara, but she will not be resurrected.

That doesn’t make much sense since this is a team up show. Not a show about one guy just meeting various heroes.

      • Drew says:

How do characters team up when at least one of them is dead? I would say that the time travel makes more sense than “Look, Sara is alive after all!”

Am I the only one wondering how on earth a sure-to-be-special-effects-laden CW show can afford so many awesome actors? Whatever, who cares how they do it, just keep ’em coming!

    • surrealkiller says:

My thought: they all just want to do it cause it’s awesome. I know some actors will forego a (overly massive) payday to do a show that will boost their rep and leave the producers with enough money to show them doing awesome superhero stuff.
