SNL's Jan Hooks Dead at 57

Saturday Night Live vet Jan Hooks died Thursday morning in New York City following a serious illness, TMZ is reporting.

Hooks was a memorable part of the SNL cast from 1986-91, and was known for her work with Nora Dunn in the Sweeney Sisters sketches, as well as for impressions of Kathie Lee Gifford, Tammy Faye Bakker and Sinead O’Connor.

Most recently, she guest-starred on 30 Rock as Verna, the hilariously trashy, often monstrous mother of Jane Krakowski’s Jenna Maroney.

After her exit from SNL, Hooks joined Designing Women for two seasons, playing Carlene, the younger sister of the departing Jean Smart’s Charlene. She also recurred on 3rd Rock From the Sun and voiced Manjula Nahasapeemapetilon on The Simpsons.

We’ve embedded a few of Hooks’ memorable TV moments below — feel free to share your favorites in the comments section.

I don’t know how many times my friend and I have looked at each other and said “Can you say adobe?” in Jan’s Texan accent from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Such a fun memory from my childhood. I hope her family finds peace.

  16. TV Gord says:

I hope she was as happy in life as she made her millions of fans! I also hope she didn’t suffer as the end approached. Right now, I’m picturing her as Tammy Faye, Sinead O’Connor, Kathie Lee Gifford, a Sweeney sister and so many others. I still miss Phil Hartman, and I think Jan belongs on that level (high praise from me).

Jan Hooks was great also in the Jiminy Glick shows and the movie ‘Jiminy Glick in LaLawood’. Sorry to know she had been ill.

  20. Michael says:

I remember when SNL had its 25th Anniversary special. During start of the tribute to Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks was standing with Jon Lovitz and other cast members during Phil’s tenure saying how much they loved Phil. Now on SNL’s 40th anniversary, they’ll probably have to do a tribute to her.

    She will be missed.
