ABC Scraps Astronaut Wives Club's Summer Debut, Plans Midseason Premiere

logo-abc-300The countdown to The Astronaut Wives Club‘s blast-off is temporarily on pause.

ABC has decided to hold the period drama — originally scheduled to bow this July – until midway through the 2014-2015 season, TVLine has confirmed.

As first reported by our sister site Deadline, the network has halted production while the series’ concept is expanded.

Club is penned by Gossip Girl‘s Stephanie Savage and follows a group of women who support their star-bound husbands during the 1960s space race. The action originally centered on the wives of the Mercury astronauts; it will now more closely follow Lily Koppel’s 2013 bestseller and chronicle the lives of the Gemini and Apollo mission crews’ spouses, as well.

In February, Club received a direct-to-series order from the Alphabet Network. Its cast includes JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Once Upon a Time), Odette Annable (House) and Desmond Harrington (Dexter).

Savage and her Gossip Girl colleague Josh Schwartz will executive-produce the drama with Len Goldstein (Hart of Dixie) and Michael London (Milk).

  1. Fernando says:

It would have done better in the summer, I doubt it’ll make enough ratings mid season to survive.

  2. Lauren says:

Is that a good or bad sign? I mean, mid-season is a bit more prestigious than summer, right? But is this a retooling of the series?

  3. M3rc Nate says:

Let me guess… a bunch of lying and cheating melodrama by wives as the men work, and probably are cheating on their wives with the secretaries/Astronaut groupies…we need more Army Wives Club and The Unit etc? Gross. Why cant their be more shows with GOOD marriages/relationships…like the Burke’s on White Collar (or a few other examples).

  4. Tommy says:

Man I was looking forward to this but midseason on ABC = automatic DOA

    • Zorkel says:

Exactly. Remember that midseason flop from a couple years ago. Um… Scandal? And then that flop this year, eh, Resurrection?

      • Tommy says:

Scandal and resurrection are the exemption. An aggregated 83% of tv shows that premiered on abc in the last 10 years were lucky to air there initial order of episodes.

      • Teag says:

Killer Women, Mind Games, The Assets, Red Widow, The River, GCB, How to Live with Your Parents, Zero Hour, Mixology.

      • Apples says:

The vast majority flops. A couple of exceptions (the two you listed, and Castle from memory was a mid-season premiere too) don’t change the pattern.

      • Hannah says:

Scandal barely made it after season 1, the success came after. This is Ouat Wanderland all over again. A summer sudster like Mistresses could have made in the summer. When will they learn?

  5. Kaycee says:

Do they want this show to fail? Soapy shows are better in the summer, this sounds like a good premise but it will get flushed out quickly in mid season. Do these execs know what they’re doing?

  6. herman1959 says:

Too bad, the premise sounds really interesting and perfect for the Summer. I hope it doesn’t get lost in a crowded mid-season timeslot like so many others on ABC.

  7. analog says:

Joanna Garcia = show killer. This will be DOA.

  8. Apples says:

Premise sounds awful, why not make it about the astronauts themselves? I hope it dies a quick death.

  9. Sardy says:

They should fill the Wives’ hole with another season of Whodunnit?

  10. Coal says:

From 13 million viewers to 8 million in 4 weeks and counting. I would not say Resurrection is a success, let’s wait until the finale to pin that badge on it.

  11. Elyse says:

Dangit!! I was really looking forward to watching it this summer.

  12. dee123 says:

I was going ti watch this. Then i saw those two horrible, horrible words: Stephanie Savage. NO THANKS!

  13. Drew says:

I would rather see this in the summer. Something about July feels better for a 1960′s space race era series. I don’t think that winter will be right for it.

    • herman1959 says:

EXACTLY……ABC spending a lot for a show that sounds promising only to tank it with the scheduling. Sound familiar?

  14. Amanda says:

I was hoping it’d air this summer too and to me this doesn’t sound like it could be a good thing. It’s more risky. Plus, makes me wonder how this will effect Joanna going back to “Once Upon a Time” as it sounded like she was going to come back for some of season 4 as her new should would’ve finished filming. I know other actors have come back to “OUAT” while starring on other shows and this being on ABC as well should help. But now both shows will be filming at the same time so it’s going to effect both.

  15. Allison says:

This show screams “I belong on Lifetime!”
