FX Orders Billy Crystal/Josh Gad Comedy The Comedians to Series

blog_combo_3.19.14Billy Crystal cemented his primetime return Wednesday when FX ordered his new comedy, The Comedians, to series.

The career funnyman/frequent Oscar host will star opposite Josh Gad (1600 Penn) in the half-hour yukfest, which is a behind-the-scenes look at late-night sketch comedy show.

Crystal’s role is that of a veteran comedian reluctantly paired with an edgy up-and-comer, played by Gad.

Stephanie Weir (MADtv), Matt Oberg (Hart of Dixie) and Megan Ferguson (Hart of Dixie) will co-star.

Larry Charles (Seinfeld), Matt Nix (Burn Notice), Ben Wexler (Community) and Crystal will write and executive-produce the series, which is based on a Swedish series of the same name. Gad will produce.

The FX series is Crystal’s first full-time TV gig since his one-season stint on Saturday Night Live nearly three decades ago. Prior to that, he played Jodie Dallas on the ’70s sitcom Soap.

The Comedians will begin production later this year and is slated to air in 2015.

I’ll have what the people at FX are having.

  2. Andrea says:

Billy Crystal is hilarious! I will definitely be sampling this.

  3. Marissa says:

So excited! Gad is such a great comedic actor, I’m really looking forward to seeing him costar with Billy Crystal.

  4. Brian says:

Wow, this actually sounds like it has a lot of potential! I am hoping this is on FX and not FXX, because DirecTV seems to feel the need to charge extra for a lineup including FXX…

  5. Isabow says:

I can’t wait for Billy Crystal’s comeback. Josh Gad on the other hand is as bad as it gets. He is not funny and is really annoying. 1600 Penn was one of the worst shows I have ever seen.

    • Sheila says:

The problem with that show is that Gad was playing a completely stupid character. If he’s a normal human this time and not a loser, maybe you’d like him.
