star-crossed-mixtapeSERIES AND EPISODE | Star-Crossed, “Pilot”
TITLE | “Aquarius”
ARTIST | Digital Daggers
ALBUM | Reimaginations: Volume 1 (2014)
WHY IT ROCKED | Romeo and Juliet? More like Romeo and Juli-E.T.! In a great act of love, alien boy Roman saves Emery’s dying friend Julia while this eerie cover of “Age of Aquarius” plays in the background — making the scene that much more chilling. We’re not sure if Emery hearts Roman yet, but we know for a fact we love this song.

girls-mixtapeSERIES AND EPISODE | Girls, “Beach House”
TITLE | “You’re Breaking My Heart”
ARTIST | Harry Nilson
ALBUM | Son of Schmilsson (1972)
WHY IT ROCKED | A weekend of “healing” for the girls leads to a nasty fight and a choreographed dance to Nilson’s NSFW ’70s tune. While comical on the surface, the song’s lyrics sum up the ladies’ weekend (and deteriorating friendships) perfectly: “There’s nothing left to say/There’s nothing left to do/You’re breakin’ my heart/You’re tearing it apart /but I love you.”

vampire-diaries-mixtapeSERIES AND EPISODE | The Vampire Diaries, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”
TITLE | “Say Something”
ARTIST | A Great Big World feat. Christina Aguilera
ALBUM | Is There Anybody Out There? (2014)
WHY IT ROCKED | Stefan and “Elena” say a lot of somethings as he tells her he’s basically #TeamDamon now, and the duo agrees to save Damon from himself. “Every time I think [Damon's] going too far, he’s there for you,” Stefan explains to Elena. “Sometimes in ways better than I ever was.” Cue “Say Something” playing in the background and suddenly, we have our ugly cryface on.

about-a-boy-mixtapeSERIES AND EPISODE | About a Boy, “Pilot”
TITLE | “What Makes You Beautiful”
ARTIST | One Direction
ALBUM | Up All Night (2011)
WHY IT ROCKED | Leave it to About a Boy to make us tear up during a One Direction song! To save Marcus from the embarrassment of his classmates, Will helps his awkward young neighbor sing an amped-up a capella version of the 2011 hit at the boy’s talent show. The scene (along with the song choice) is charming, infectious and heartwarming — just like the show itself.

the-fosters-mixtapeSERIES AND EPISODE | The Fosters, “Us Against the World”
TITLE | “Same Changes”
ARTIST | The Weepies
ALBUM | N/A but the single is available here.
WHY IT ROCKED | We can’t think of a better song for Fosters kids Brandon and Callie than this Weepies tune, which plays during an overwrought conversation between the two. “Everyone says this love will change you. Well I ask, does anything ever stay the same?” asks the song, a question Brandon and Callie are most likely pondering themselves.

jimmy-fallon-paul-rudd-mixtapeSERIES AND EPISODE | The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, “Paul Rudd”
TITLE | “Don’t Stop Me Now”
ARTIST | Queen
ALBUM | Jazz (1978)
WHY IT ROCKED | We love Paul Rudd’s rendition of Tina Turner’s “Better Be Good To Me” in his lip-synch battle with Jimmy Fallon, but it’s the comedic actor’s exuberant performance of the Queen jam that really has us in stitches. Fallon also seems to enjoy the hysterical theatrics — he gives Rudd the win before the bit is even up! (Watch the wonderfully Rudd-iculous video.)

Fiona-ShamelessSERIES AND EPISODE | Shameless, “A Jailbird, Invalid, Martyr, Cutter, Retard, and Parasitic Twin”
TITLE | “Both Sides Are Even”
ARTIST | The Boxer Rebellion
ALBUM | The Cold Still (2011)
WHY IT ROCKED | We always enjoy the music on the Showtime hit. But there is something equally beautiful and heartbreaking about hearing this particular song soar while Fiona utters the words, “I’m guilty.”

greys-april-jackson-marriedSERIES AND EPISODE | Grey’s Anatomy, “Take It Back”
TITLE | “Bones”
ARTIST | Josh Record
ALBUM | N/A but Record’s The War – EP is available here.
WHY IT ROCKED | April and Jackson decide to get married, and we decide to die of happiness. OK yeah, they kind of destroyed everything (and everyone) in their path to love, but we’re just going to ignore that for a second. We adore them… and the song that plays during the big reveal.

  1. Josh says:

I find TVD to be more disturbing each passing episode, “Listen “Elena”, Damon is totally there for you, and if not, he’s killing your brother. It’s called love”…And now I’m not a Stelena fan. I’m either. Let’s face it, Elena stop existing as a character long before Katherine took over her body. The Vampire Diaries might as well be called “Man Pain: The TV Show” because the female characters aren’t there to function as anything else.

  2. Andy says:

On Psych, when Juliet was leaving Santa Barbara at the end of the episode, Big Strong Girl by Deb Talan was a great song to have playing.

  3. +1 says:

I’d had “Radioactive” from this week’s first scene on TVD. It was just perfectly and matched the tone. I loved it! Say Something is getting on my nerves by now.

    • dude says:

Arrow used it better. It was barely audible in TVD.

      • Jules says:

The only thing I found funny for a split second was that near the beginning of the song there is a part where the singer breathes in loudly for whatever reason, and they dubbed that with the guy awaking from the dead.
But, agreed, Arrow used it better.

  4. ... says:

Looking used Morrissey’s “Everyday is Like Sunday” in a recent episode and it was beautiful.

  5. Alex says:

My favorite TVD tune this week was “Fleur blance” by Orsten in the scene where Katherine is changing in the bathroom, leading up to her and Stefan’s little make-out sesh. Perfect song for the scene, and really the only one I felt the need to look up and buy.

  6. Tamar says:

In my veins from this week’s Castle (and the season 4 finale) is AMAZING!

  7. Sara says:

Loved the song on Grey’s, had to tunefind it immediately

  8. SL says:

    Nice compilation.

  9. Emily says:

The song on Grey’s is so fitting for Jackson and April – love it!

  10. Delena forever says:

I hate katherine Oh My God !!! Just die already nobody really cares as long as Elena comes back

I loved the greys anatomy song it fit the moment perfectly

  11. Delirious says:

The “Aquarius” cover on Star-Crossed was quite cool, IMHO.

But to me, the best music selection award for quite some time goes to Bones, and Arrow isn’t doing too bad.

  12. B says:

I first heard Both Sides Are Even by Boxer Rebellion on Grey’s (S7, I believe) and I have to say that hearing it again was amazing. It fit the scene well and BR are great musicians.
