Homeland Exclusive: Two Original Castmembers Not Returning as Regulars in Season 4

Get More: Casting News, Exclusive

Homeland Season 4 CastHomeland is saying goodbye to two of its own.

On the eve of the Showtime hit’s Season 3 finale, TVLine has learned exclusively that original castmembers Morena Baccarin and Morgan Saylor will not be back as series regulars in Season 4.

The move hardly comes as a surprise, as Baccarin’s Jessica and Saylor’s Dana appeared less frequently as Season 3 went on and Brody’s shattered home life became less of a focus. (The former’s real-life pregnancy also likely contributed to Jessica’s disappearance during the second half of the season.)

According to sources, the door is open for both actresses to return on a guest-star basis, the same way ex-full-timer Diego Klattenhoff (Mike) did this season.

Reps for Showtime and 20th Century Fox declined to comment.

Homeland wraps its third season Sunday at 9/8c.

  • Mark my words — Brody is going to survive the finale. Convinced more than ever.

    • Why? All signs point to his death.

      • Well he wasn’t mentioned in this release and I just don’t think they’d be releasing this now if he was dying…They’d save it for after.

Comment by Josh – December 13, 2013 06:09 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • They probably released it now so we will be “surprised” when he lives. You know that Carrie’s, “I’m pregnant,” is going to give him the motivation he needs to make it through whatever obstacle gets in his way.

          • If Brody lives I think the reaction of his family to his new child would be a big story. I don’t think I will watch next season if he lives. Does anyone want him to live?

Comment by Richard – December 13, 2013 07:18 PM PDT
          • I think about half the fans of the show want Brody dead or written off the show, and the other half want Brody to survive.

          • I want him to live, but I also want them to find something really good for him to do next season and not just have him hanging around all useless as a character.

Comment by vee cee – December 15, 2013 09:52 PM PDT
        • The timing is strange. You would think that the producers would not want to release this information until after the finale on Monday. If Brody dies in the finale, very little attention would have been given to Baccarin and Saylor leaving the show as regulars, by doing it now, they get the attention that they deserve for being on the show for three seasons.

    • I think Brody will be back. Carrie being pregnant with Brody’s child will keep that relationship going for awhile. Carrie is 13 weeks pregnant, and the bombing was 3 months ago. I’m wondering if there is a possibility that the baby’s a result of her one night fling??? I don’t think so, but the writer’s love to make things messy.

    • In real time:

The Iranian prisoner who survived his execution and revived in the morgue having been pronounced dead, will not be hanged for a second time, Iran’s justice minister has said.

The minister, Mostafa Pourmohammadi, said in Tehran on Tuesday night that the 37-year-old, who is now on life support, will not face a second execution, Iran’s state news agency reported.

“The convict who survived the death penalty will not be re-executed,” Pourmohammadi was quoted as saying.

The man, identified in the Iranian media only by his first name, Alireza, was hanged this month in Bojnurd prison in Iran’s northern Khorasan province.

Alireza, a father of two, had been convicted of smuggling drugs. He was arrested three years ago for possessing a kilo of crystal meth and was sentenced to death by a revolutionary court.

On the execution day medics pronounced him dead after he had been hanging by the neck for 12 minutes. Morgue workers realised he had survived only when they spotted steam (condensation) in the plastic cover he was wrapped in.

  • GOOD! This show is struggling so hard without Brody and when he came back instantly i started to enjoy the show again and it was so much fun. Im sorry but the other characters are not leads, especially Brody’s family. This show survives or dies along with Brody. If he dies and next season is sans-Brody, i bet viewership drops to unacceptable levels and is criticized for being weak and without a lead and is eventually cancelled.
    -
Id love if someone could re-watch every episode and cut together the clips of Carrie crying and see if she cries in every episode, im convinced she cries in at least 90% lol…its insane. Im surprised feminist TV show writers dont have a issue that there is finally a main character female thats in a position of power, and she is weak, cries ALL the time, breaks down all the itme, is unfit to work for any part of the government (her mental health issues), her life revolves around a man who she is sleeping with while hes married…lol…she is the worst.
    -
Sorry for Baccarin but its for the best, The character is boring and annoying and gets very little screen time, its time for her to go out and audition and get an amazing series of her own or star in movies or something. IMO she should have auditioned for/got the Wonder Woman role over Gal Gadot. Excited to see what she does next. The daughter was pretty and seemed like a good actress but Dana…lets just say i would have liked it if she succeed in the bathtub.

Comment by Annie – December 14, 2013 09:22 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • Crying is just fine…i just thought people who watch the show would know to put together her crying and her flipping the F out…like she did in the Black Op room (when Brody was going into Iran) and when the truck blows up shes crying and screaming and Saul has to basically yell at her. Thats just one example of what happens basically once a episode involving Carrie.
          -
To be clear, male or female, crying isnt weakness. It in fact is important and human and good for you (release of emotions to clear your mind)…but even if she was just a normal CIA operator (no mental illness or anything) none of her outbursts and freak outs and yelling and screaming while on the clock at her workplace (or out in the field) would be accepted. Your expected to be in control of your emotions and actions…not be a crazy crying angry mess whos yelling at the director of the CIA.
          -
(A example, i loved the scene(s) where the Iranian woman (CIA Analyst) cries. When Saul does his stern speech about her Hijab (head scarf) and she cries…because she isnt freaking out or yelling at him or having a emotional break down…it was moving and added so much depth and heart to the scene.)

  • Beautiful Brazilian born actress Morena Baccarin was an 8th grade classmate of Claire Danes in NYC. I always wondered if that tangental connection helped get her the part in Homeland. That said, if there is a personal connection, then I’m convinced that writing her out as a regular was probably more of Morena’s choice given that she has a new born to take care of.

  • Talk about feeling conflicted. I got excited because I thought that this meant no more Brody, then saw that it was Jessica and Dana. A revelation that would have me jumping for glee in any other situation. The writers have successfully convinced me to want Brody gone more than Dana and the Brody’s family storylines. I’m shocked.

  • I think they are going to kill Brody off….I really hope they don’t because it would be more interesting to see what kinda of life he could have if he made it out alive…that’s why his wife and daughter are not series regulars next season because the Brody storyline will be over except for Carrie having his baby which will be her tribute to him.

  • If the door is left open for guest appearances, I would guess that means Brody survives. Otherwise it would just be weird to have them around. Unless that info was leaked out as a red herring to make us surprised that he does die.
    .
On a related note, I found a really funny Homeland parody on YouTube that I think people who enjoy the show should check out. It’s called Boneland, and I PROMISE it’s not porn, despite its title sounding like a porn parody. It’s doggies acting out Homeland, and it’s cute as hell. If you dislike the Brody family, you’ll probably like this parody as it pulls no punches with them.
