Fast and the Furious actor Paul Walker, who got his start on television with stints on The Young and the Restless, Who’s the Boss and Highway to Heaven as well as the short-lived syndicated sitcom Throb, has died following a single car accident outside Los Angeles. He was 40.
Per TMZ, which first reported the news, the car carrying Walker slammed into a tree and burst into flames in Santa Clarita, Calif. The driver of the vehicle — Walker’s close friend and business partner Roger Rodas — also died.
The news was confirmed on the actor’s official Facebook page:
It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend’s car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences. – #TeamPW
A string of supporting roles in films like Varsity Blues, She’s All That and Pleasantville led to his big break in 2001’s The Fast and the Furious. He appeared in four subsequent sequels and was currently filming Fast & Furious 7.
Walker’s latest pic, the Hurricane Katrina drama Hours, is due out Dec. 13.
He leaves behind a 15-year-old daughter, Meadow, with ex-girlfriend Rebecca McBrain.
