Halle Berry is making a big move to the small screen.
The Academy Award-winning actress has been tapped to star in Extant, a new sci-fi drama slated to bow on CBS in summer 2014.
From Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and CBS Television Studios, the 13-episode thriller centers on an astronaut (Berry) who, following a year-long solo mission, attempts to settle back in to her everyday life. Ultimately, her experiences in both space and at home will lead to events that change the course of history.
“There’s only one Halle Berry and we are incredibly honored that she has chosen Extant to expand her illustrious career,” Spielberg said Friday in a statement. “As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role and I very much look forward to working with her.”
Berry’s Oscar win came in 2002 (for Monster’s Ball); she also took home the Emmy in 2000 for Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie (for Introducing Dorothy Dandridge), and scored a second nomination in 2005 (for Their Eyes Were Watching God).
In addition to the new series, Berry and her producing partner, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, have entered into a two-year, first look production deal with CBS Television Studios.
