Fall TV Preview

Smash Alum Will Chase Books Big Nashville Role

WillChaseWill Chase can check “Romancing another lovely primetime redhead” off his to-do list: The Smash vet has been cast as Connie Britton’s potential love interest in Nashville‘s upcoming season.

Chase will play Luke, a country music star who just might capture Rayna’s hurting heart on the ABC drama, TVLine has confirmed.

The Tony nominee left a starring role in the forthcoming musical theater adaptation of Little Miss Sunshine to take the Nashville gig, according to Broadway.com, which first reported the casting.

Nashville showrunner Dee Johnson recently hinted to TVLine that “Rayna does get involved with… a musical star of equal or greater stature, which proves interesting.”

At the moment, ABC isn’t releasing any information about how long Luke will be in Ms. Jaymes’ orbit — or how/whether he’ll compete with Oliver Hudson’s businessman, who also may squire a post-Deacon Rayna.

Smash fans will remember Broadway vet Chase as Michael Swift, Julia’s lover who — for a time — played Bombshell‘s Joe DiMaggio. Bottom line: The guys got the pipes for the Nashville gig.

Chase’s other TV credits include The Good Wife, Necessary RoughnessWhite Collar and Rescue Me.

Nashville‘s second season bows Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 10/9c.

    • Agreed. I love Connie Britton, but Hayden’s performance and Juliet’s storyline is what made Nashville’s first season. She definitely deserved that Emmy nomination over Connie. Also seriously what are they trying to make Rayna into. She already has her husband and Deacon and that producer guy. Enough already. Where is the scoop on Juliet’s story this upcoming season?

    • Including Deacon, Teddy and Liam, she’s gonna have two more new love interests, Oliver Hudson and Will Chase. Meaning, 5 in this season as far as I know and the production has said! (Note: I’m a huge fan of Connie Britton <3) :)

  • Let me guess, he’s going to play an adulterer? He played adulterers in Pan Am and Smash, hopefully this is going to be a different role.

  • NASHVILLE is a Gawd-awful show and they had the gall to ditch SMASH. Bore me to tears!

  • Hmm, I’m a Deacon/Rayna person, but I was very okay with the news that Oliver Hudson would be playing Rayna’s potential love interest. I wasn’t a huge fan of Chase’s character on Smash, so I can’t imagine rooting for him over the very attractive Oliver Hudson and Charles Esten. But if Mr. Chase left a Broadway show to do this, he must believe he’s in it for a long haul. I’m not happy with this news.

  • Ugh… ANOTHER guy for Rayna? Why do they insist on having all of these men orbit Rayna when she’s already admitted she’ll never love anyone like Deacon. Yes, they have a TON of stuff to work through, but it’s kind of hard to do when you’re dangling a man off of every limb. =( Not happy-

  • I have a serious question for any of your readers who have been on Broadway… why are theater folks so eager to leave for television. It’s such a waste of such vocal talents for Megan Hilty to be in a non-singing role for example. Is TV that much better hours/pay?

    • Yes, ahd yes. And don’t forget exposure. One episode of a poorly-rated show will probably be seen by more people than entire Broadway run.

    • They aren’t eager to leave for television. Will Chase did a lot of TV, then went back to Broadway for years, then TV, then another show, etc. It’s just something different, gives them more exposure, the pay is way better, it’s less exhausting than 8 shows a week. Most do television so they can afford to live off of what Broadway pays, which is their real passion.

I was looking forward to him starring in Sunshine at the Second Stage Theatre. I am bummed but glad that it will now be cheaper to see him in my living room.

    • Steven Pasquale, aka Sean Garritty from Rescue Me, is a big musical theatre guy, and he was able to pick the roles on stage he wanted because of the success of Rescue Me. Daniel Sunjata too, he has an amazing voice, and the $$ and exposure they can get from TV shows allows them to work on theatre projects they really love.

  • It is such lazy writing to just create storylines revolving around love/sex. There are other interesting things in adult life

  • No one thought Juliette will be a good character when her storyline was soo over the top. I don’t think that any spoiler can really say if it’s a good or bad story since this is a show that drived from characters and how they handle certian situations.
Also, I get why Rayna has some more than one love interest-she is free, sexy as hell and not sitting at home crying all day. That of course, doesn’t mean she’ll be serious about any or all of them, but come on-the woman just got a divorce and got in a car accident with a man who can’t be in a relationship with her without losing it.

  • I really think Rayna is being rebellious in her owe way because she knows that she did wrong to Deacon not telling him that he was Maddies father hopefully Deacon will come to terms about why she did it and Rayna will stop trying to make Deacon jealous because she feels he did that their whole relationship, the both must grow up because they belong together Will Chase is another porn to her lets wait and see what will happen. Another thing nothing is being said about what happens with Deacon!! It’s all about Rayna who admits there is no one but Deacon and there never was!Same about Deacon!
