Get More: News, Pilots

JJAbrams_300HBO is getting into the J.J. Abrams business.

The premium cable net has given a pilot order to Westworld, a drama inspired by the 1973 film of the same name, from Abrams‘ Bad Robot Productions and Person of Interest creator Jonathan Nolan.

Written by Nolan and Lisa Joy (Burn Notice), the project is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin. The potential series is set in the world conceived by the movie’s writer/director Michael Crichton.

Nolan will direct the pilot and exec-produce alongside Joy, Abrams, Jerry Weintraub (Ocean’s Eleven) and Bryan Burk (Revolution).

  • Now this is a major dumb idea. Didn’t they try this once before? Even the sequel to Westworld bombed badly. With thousands of great Science Fiction books and stories out there, why they insist in trying to resurrect something that stands alone that should be left alone, I’ll never know. So they will waste millions to do this dumb show, cancel some good program or raise our rates to pay for it.

    • Gots to disagree…
I love this..the original movie is a classic beloved to this day. It’s from a Michael Crichton( ER, Jurassic Park) book that had a lot going on that never made it to the movie. Then you have Nolan (POI, TDK, Memento) and Abrams running it on a network like HBO…to me this sounds awesome. Now I just want to know who will be cast in it.

    • Actually, it’s a flipping brilliant – and for the first time they can actually do the concept as it was conceived. This is the best greenlight since Game of Thrones.. and the best material as well.

    Could be interesting

    • If Abrams now made and rod serling last show on cable – AMC, FX or even netflix will be best news of the year. But this time he can direct the pilot(2 part pilot). If stranger is really that show looks more like sci-fi/horror show than just sci-fi which is even better news.

  • So he’s doing the Star Trek and Star Wars movie franchises, and he’s an EP on Person of Interest, Revolution, Almost Human, Believe, and now Westworld. This guy needs some valium to relax. :)

    • He’s not really all that involved with the TV shows he produces. He basically just attaches his name to it.

    • Abrams is sci fi king! His all life is sci fi. No one made more for sci fi genre(more sucessful sci fi tv shows) than him in last 20 years/2 decades. I want more people to fight for sci fi genre even on mainstream media because sci fi is BEST GENRE and sci fi fans are most educated one. You can’t be narrow minded/stupid and be sci fi fan. sorry.

  • Give it the dark Battlestar Galatica remake tone.

Comment by qj201 – August 31, 2013 07:31 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • It’s original tone is dark, so it doesn’t need to be given it. Considering it’s about people being able to indulge in their deepest, darkest fantasies (sex, murder, etc.) in a (supposedly) perfectly safe robotically-populated artificial environment. It’s such an immersive. sophisticated simulation, the robots actually gain sentience and start *killing* the humans. I’m not sure how that premise can’t be dark.

  • What does this mean re: Jonathan Nolan’s shorunning position on Person of Interest? Will he be doing double duty or handing it off wholly to Greg Plageman?

Comment by David S – August 31, 2013 11:07 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • ABrams&Nolan are best sci fi team EVER! They create(Nolan) and develope/produce(Abrams) best scripted show on broacast TV – Person of interest.(must be example how crime drama should be written and acted) i expect at least Game of Thrones level even more.

ps Althou after NSA surveillance scandal and revelations about PRISM now POI looks more like real crime drama than sci fi crime drama.

Comment by Petar – August 31, 2013 11:49 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Abrams and Nolan are sci fi kings now. Pure genius. Abrams with his brain and Nolan with his intelligence i mean come on! And Nolan is such quality. His script is like from parallel universe compare to orci/kurtzman script.

Even without star wars and dark knight these two will be immortal for sci fi community all over the world!

  • and jj abrams attention deficit disorder strikes again, why cant he just make a show or two and some movies? why does he feel the need to spread himself so thin? if he actually concentrated himself on one thing for an extended period of time he could make something amazing, instead he is like a four year old in a room full of new toys.

  • Please cast Jeffrey Donovan.

  • Oh, great. Abrams loosed to butcher another classic Science Fiction Story. So he’s butchered Star Trek – Into Darkness was plain awful – after admitting to not ever liking Star Trek he’s given the authority to turn it into a fist fighting, shallow piece of nonsence. He’s now hired to butcher Star Wars. He is so far from being ‘the king of sci-fi’ it’s not even funny. He’s more like the Court Fool.

    Not-a-Fan.

    • And I think the exactly opposite in very way – and it amuses me that people don’t like what Abrams is doing. Too bad… not.

  • Is there no other producer/director in all of Hollywood who can be trusted with sci-fi???
