Law & Order: SVU Sneak Peek: A Kidnapped Benson Declares, 'I Want to Live'

Leading lady Mariska Hargitay signed a new deal to return to Law & Order: SVU for Season 15, but that doesn’t mean her onscreen alter ego Olivia Benson is out of danger.

In the following promo for the long-running drama’s Sept. 25 return (NBC, 9/8c), the detective is seen being physically and emotionally terrorized by William “Burnt Fingertips” Lewis (played by Pablo Schreiber) while her colleagues desperately attempt to locate him.

  1. jabberinjess says:

Any idea how many episodes Dean Winters is going to be in this season?

    • Daphne says:

He does have another project going so guess it depends on that. I got the impression early on though that his stint on SVU wouldn’t be for too long.

  2. gamesbuy says:

    That is BRUTAL!!

  3. Courtney says:

    Cassidy = D.

  4. Amanda says:

Yay, Cassidy! I hope Dean Winters sticks around for a while this time.

  5. Chicago Dan says:

How sad that Olivia has been turned into a typical SVU victim. Be bold and kidnap one of the guys and do this to them.

    • Just one thing says:

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ll be really surprised if Olivia doesn’t get herself out of that mess seconds or minutes before the team saves her. It would be strange for them not to have her kick ass herself.
I haven’t watched the show regularly in years, but I will check out the premiere to see what happens.

      • Haleigh says:

I agree with you I do watch it all the time though but she always kicks ass by herself before the crew comes to save her and this part has nothing to do with the whole subject me and you have been talking about but the reporters said that benson might not do a new season after season 15 witch breakes my heart cause most of the time I watch it cause of her if she leaves I just might not watch it I don’t know.

    • Pumpkinbabies says:

Olivia may be kickass but she is not superwoman.

      • Haleigh says:

Well she is just like superwoman not only in the show but in real life two and in real life she has a foundation called joyful hearts and it helps real rape victims so ya she is just like superwoman in that case

      • Carrie says:

Yeah, and let’s not forget that someone else had to rescue her in “Undercover”

  6. Erin says:

holy omigosh I cannot even what the what is NBC trying to do to us?!?!?

  7. Boom says:

This is pretty awesome casting – considering the fact that he also stars in ironside which will premiere after SVU a week later.

  8. amadeline says:

It’s way, way past time she bowed out gracefully! I’d much rather watch the rest of the cast than her any day.

    • Haley says:

Okay listen I’m really getting tried of people saying bad things about marskia she is the main person in this show she completes it and if she leaves I promise more then half of the people that watch It now won’t watch it anymore. Thanks

    • Haleigh says:

Are you kidding me she is the whole show and it would not be half as good without her and a lot of people agree with me

    • Alex says:

SVU While Mariska is in, I’ll be watching. She is a fantastic actress and Olivia Benson is a great character. I like the new detectives. But Amanda Rollins never be one Olivia Benson. Olivia is incomparable and irreplaceable. And Mariska, at 49, remains increasingly beautiful. Your smile is unmatched.

  9. Esaul says:

The past finale/premiere has been strong post-Meloni. This is just as promising, I think. SVU is still one of NBC’s most reliable shows. I hope they utilize Munch and Cragen more. Glad to see Raul in this season, I love the legal side. And I would love to see Dean Winters more, even if it’s sporadically.

  10. B says:

Wow – they are really going there. This looks very disturbing … Sept. 25 can’t come soon enough!!

  11. kajar says:

Yeah, unfortunately this may be where I have to jump ship. I’ve watched and appreciated this show for many years (even after Stabler left), but I have no interest in seeing Olivia become a rape victim, no matter how “realistic” it may be (though I’m sure Ms. Hargitay will knock it out of the park as usual). I’m still hopeful I won’t have to give it up though, just have to wait and see…

  12. TL says:

I smell another EMMY for Mariska.

    • haley says:

I shouldn’t laugh after watching that promo, but I couldn’t help but laugh at the Emmy comment. I’m sorry, but no. Those days are long gone. There are so many other quality actresses on quality shows that will get that honor.

      • Haleigh says:

Well in my eyes and all of her other biggest fans she will always come out on top no matter if she wins an Emmy or not so just saying

        • haley says:

Honey, there’s a reason she hasn’t won an Emmy in YEARS and why she hasn’t been nominated in 2 years. Wake up, kid.

  13. Tori says:

I see me skipping this season. This is The Olivia Benson Hour, which is turning into The Olivia Benson Season according to everything Warren Leight has said so far, and I have no interest in watching. I especially have no interest in seeing Olivia be raped/almost raped/tortured/assaulted after the way Warren Leight, Julie Martin, the SVU Writers Room, and every other person associated with the show has been joking about it on twitter. Apparently they forgot they’re working on a sex crimes show.

    • jenferner8 says:

Sex crime TV show, yes. “Reality” crime show, no. I would agree with you IF this show was the type of thing viewers could only find on news type of channels, however it’s not.

  14. No says:

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG YOU, NBC?! This is torture porn. This is disgusting. You have taken everything that Olivia Benson stood for, and thrown it away. This is nowhere near the show’s strongest years, those years are long gone. First you use Mike Tyson – a rapist – on the show, now the plot is literally “Olivia is going to get raped.” This is like a bad fanfiction.net saga come to life, but much more heinous and cruel. (The ff.net version would have Olivia also give birth to several children after her ordeal). I can not believe that the storyline literally is “Olivia could get raped and die.” Is this a pathetic ratings grab? A chance to see Cassidy up as a hero and Olivia as a damsel in distress? The Save Benson campaign is disgusting, this promo is awful, and this show is officially DOA.

    • Hannah says:

That’s exactly what it is. A ratings ploy. However, I believe they’ll find out soon enough that it’s going to backfire; and bad. The #SaveBenson hashtag has been the worst idea of all worst ideas. It truly has become a joke to the staff of SVU. They think the 15 year old girls on twitter that actually want Olivia to get raped then immediately get pregnant with Brian’s baby, or the rapist’s baby in some instances, speak for the entire fandom. They’re in for a very very rude awakening when no one is watching after a few episodes this season.

      • LaT says:

Ok, no. Slag off the storyline all you want, but don’t do so by blaming/shaming teenaged girls, or ascribing to them questionable desires. If you can’t make your argument without denigrating children, then your argument isn’t one worth making.

        • whatever homie says:

Where exactly was she shaming or denigrating children? You must be one of these said tweens trolling on Warren and Julie all the time if that offended you. All you have to do is look at Warren’s and Julie’s mentions and you’ll notice 90% of them are from children.

    • Thomas says:

This isn’t a whole new idea for a storyline; Olivia was nearly raped while undercover years ago. Granted, that wasn’t a season-bridging cliff-hanger, but seeing Olivia deal with that in later episodes, especially with the PTSD, was some of the best acting I’ve seen from Ms. Hargitay on this show. Low ratings or not this season is locked into 22 episodes, and I can’t wait to see what the writers do to show Olivia’s path back, if indeed she even has one.

And “taken everything that Olivia Benson stood for [sic], and thrown it away?” How so?

    • Megan says:

I entirely agree. This show works very hard to be stomach-churning, and I appreciate that. But they generally have the decency to not exploit the whole rape/torture thing too much. There is a clear line between raising awareness and starting a dialogue about issues in society while creating gripping entertainment (which was what I thought this show was trying to do. It’s not always successful, but I thought that was the goal) and pimping out the sickest and most terrible parts of society to get a little extra money and notoriety (I mean, obviously everyone is there for the fame and a paycheck, but I’d like them to at least TRY to hide it). With this, the show has jumped over that line and kept running. Warren Leight & Co. are enjoying this a little too much, and it has, as you said, become torture porn. Gross.

  15. Mickey says:

I believe someone upthread said it best. This will be The Olivia Benson Hour/Season. We’ll see her get tortured, assaulted, and/or raped. Then we’ll see her dealing with it at home, work, and therapy all the while Warren can’t think of anything original to write other than exploiting current headlines. I wonder which convicted rapist he’ll hire as a guest star this season?

  16. Haley says:

If olivia dies the show died and more then half of the people that watch law and order svu will not watch it anymore including me.

  17. Regina Mills says:

This preview made my stomach turn. No thanks.

  18. Ameena Begum says:

I hope that Olivia Benson does not get raped and the SVU team finds her before the serial rapist kills her.

  19. Haleigh says:

Marishka is the whole show well most of it anyway she has done so many great things in the real world that she should be on the show forever she should get way better comments then she gets and for all the people that gave her awesome comments good for you and I hope you guys get what I’m saying

    • shut uppppp says:

Explain this to me “Haleigh”: Why are 13 year olds with poor grammar and no original thought allowed on the internet?

      • kajar says:

Better still… why are so many condescending douche trolls allowed on? Haleigh was simply asking for a little positivity. Why are uncalled for snide remarks necessary?

        • y u so funny? says:

Poor “kajar”, is that really your name, doll? Why must you get your panties in a wad. You babies are so cute.

  20. Tibult says:

came to see the promo, stayed for the hilarious comments

“WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG YOU, NBC?! This is torture porn. This is disgusting.”

  21. Ashley says:

You know, not all the drama on twitter comes from teenage girls. If you look for yourself, you’ll find a fair share of the immature “fangirls” are actually middle aged women-some even with spouses and children. In fact, most of Meloni fanatics who refuse to let go of Elliot and the EO ship are well over 30. Blaming everything on the teenagers isn’t going to solve anything. I happen to think the show is better than ever since Chris Meloni left and Warren Leight took over. The writing has improved majorly and I think Danny, Dean, Raul, and Kelli were great additions to the cast. I, for one, cannot wait to see the premiere. It’s going to be hard to watch Olivia go through such an ordeal but I have faith that the writers will play it out properly. From the looks of it, Mariska is going to slay this season. I hope Dean Winters sticks around for the remainder of the show’s run. I absolutely love him and the relationship between Olivia and Cassidy. They’re an excellent fit and they seem happy together. It’s nice to see someone giving Olivia the love she deserves and her reciprocating it for once.
For those of you who have nothing but insults towards the show and its production, I suggest you stop wasting your time on something you hate and let others enjoy it in peace. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. It’s as simple as that.

  22. Susan alewine says:

I enjoy the show but I think having Olivia raped would be the worse thing they would do to the show. She’s been attacked once that’s enough, lets be original. And for none of the detectives to figure out he would go after her was so lame! That being said, I do think mariska is a good actress. The ones that have been winning the Emmys haven’t impressed me any in these past five years. I can’t sit through their shows they’re so boring.

  23. Jade says:

Dean Winters is adorable. I will die a happy woman if Brian and Liv are still together in the end. Just because it’s a drama, doesn’t mean there always has to be drama in the personal aspect of the show. I see nothing wrong with Liv being in a happy, comfortable relationship for…forever. There’s no need for a wedding or babies, just two people who love each other spending the rest of their lives together.

    • Courtney says:

Same. Although, I’m not so sure about no kids. Yes, they are older now, but Olivia has alllwaaayss wanted kids… I think it would be cute for her&Brian to look after someone; be it their own child, or a foster one or something. I always hoped that OIivia would end up either inlove, or with child. Maybe not both, though, I guess. I liked when she was alone romantically but had Calvin. I really do like Cassidy though, and I want him to stick around.

      • Jade says:

Okay, a little Bensidy baby would be pretty cute, if I do say so myself. And can you imagine how freakin’ stubborn he/she would be?! Lol. I think after everything that’s happened/is going to happen, adding a baby to the mix right now may be a little too much but I’m all for it once their lives settle down a bit. I think the perfect ending to SVU would be Olivia either taking a promotion or retiring, while her and Brian start a new life with a child or two. I feel like after all they’ve been through, both together and separately, seeing them completely happy in the end would be ideal. Frankly, every character on the show deserves a happy ending and I won’t forgive the writers if they don’t make it happen.

        • Courtney says:

Oh yeah, definitely not right now…. but by the end of the show, yeah = ). I agree- Olivia needs a happy ending and I think that (retirement, Brian, and possibly children) is the best way to give her that… and hopefully soon. I love the show, but I think it’s near time for it to be over.

  24. Warren Jr. says:

I find it amusing that Warren Leight tweeted this link when the negative comments started appearing. Son, you need some better P.R. maybe stop joking about rape with the kiddies and start making a crime drama again.

    • Blake says:

“Start making a crime drama again.” Do you even watch the show?! And when has he EVER joked about rape?

      • Warren Jr. says:

Apparently you haven’t looked in the #SaveBenson hashtag. He and the kiddos have made plenty of jokes. Between Warren, Julie, Kevin Fox, Mike Smith, the SVUWritersRoom, and the children that want Olivia raped, that hashtag has become a huge embarrassment. Yes they’ve been joking about Olivia being raped and/or assaulted. If you don’t think they have then that says a lot about you.

  25. MorbidPet says:

Love the promo. Still don’t think Liv will be raped tho. WL & the gang is working us up, they need the ratings. I’d watch either way so it’s wasted on me. I’m just worried the focus will be too much on Liv. I love the esemble show that took over after the ‘Stabler&BensonShow’. I want to see more Fin and Rollins, love their partnership. And more angsty Amaro (skip his lovelife tho). And don’t forget Munch and Cragen. Awesome characters and actors. Use them! But judging by the spoilers on twitter n such, location photos and hints, they are dealing with some ripped from the headline storylines and hopefully they’ll keep Liv’s PTSD on the sideline.
Bring on season 15! Oh and I’m far from a tween.

    • Tori says:

You hope this episode won’t focus too much on Liv? LMAO ok. This entire season is going to be nothing but her and dealing with the aftermath. You’ll see how it affects her at home, work, and then in therapy. Warren’s already mentioned this. So long ensemble.

  26. courtney says:

You know what, if you like the show and the story line they’re going with, great. If you don’t like it don’ t watch. I happen to think its a great show and i love olivia and will definatly be watching. So all the haters out there, stop wasting your time trying to cause an argument about it and let the people who enjoy the show be happy. No one’s forcing you to watch so if you don’t like it then don’t.

  27. Carrie says:

I am having a difficult time understanding some of the criticism in these comments (and I’m 42, not 13). What is the problem? Oh, you’re okay watching women getting raped on Game of Thrones, or Hannibal eating people for dinner and being glamourized for doing so, but it’s not okay for a sex crimes detective to get raped/tortured, and show how she deals with it? I think it’s more likely to help someone who has been through it than some of these other shows like Sons of Anarchy that make bad guys into heroes. As for the writers joking about it–I never saw jokes in their comments, they were merely trying to build up the tension (unless someone can show me a comment that demonstrates otherwise). This show has consistently put a spotlight on crimes that nobody wants to talk about, bringing awareness to subjects that are normally kept hush-hush. I commend them for that, and Mariska for taking such an activist role on sexual assault.

  28. Leslie says:

Then you weren’t looking closely or you were enjoying the joking around. Instead of handling this subject matter in a mature professional way, they’ve been teasing the minority of the fandom about Liv’s fate. If she gets raped, yes it could help many people. But stop taking the subject matter so lightly because it’s turning a majority of people over the age of 21 off.

    • Jane Doe says:

Are you actually accusing SVU of taking the subject matter of rape lightly?! Maybe it’s time you get your eyes and ears checked.

      • Zoe says:

99% sure Leslie’s talking about how some of the writers/EPs/actors have been dropping hints on Twitter.

        • Carrie says:

Yeah, and I’m just not sure that dropping hints is the same thing as joking. I didn’t laugh, but it did get me eager to find out what happens, and I think that was the point. Look, it’s a TV show, and bottom line is they want ratings, yes. Doesn’t mean they are somehow approving of rape. Maybe not in the best taste, but…

  29. Zoe says:

I am really, really scared for Liv- but I’m no longer against this arc like I used to be. I believe and hope that they do this right, and I know Mariska’s going to try her damndest. This is going to be very hard, but I’m not against it anymore. In the end, this is probably going to make her stronger. Is this how I would’ve written it? Hell no. But what if Mariska wants to tell this story? Then, would so many people be against it?

  30. Jane Smith says:

I love mariska so I would love if the season is based on her!!! She’s an amazing actress beautiful and kind! She has taken an very emotional and powerful role and everyone’s just saying mean things! I know I’m young I mean i’m 12 and I shouldnt know anything but I’ve been watching SVU since I was 7 and nothing so intense has happened so I know for a fact she’s working harder than before and I think you should shut up and try imagine being in her shoes trying to put her heart into this and people are saying ‘I hate her’ or ‘she’s such a bitch because you wouldnt last a day!!! Im sorry if I’ve offended you but it’s true!!!

  31. Lexi says:

Thank you for proving why someone else said 12 year olds shouldn’t be allowed on the internet. You’ve been watching since you were 7??? Sheesh, where are your parents???

  32. Tonya says:

I’ve always loved the show. And I appreciate the entire cast. Were some episodes/seasons better than others? Yes. Do I miss some of the old characters? Of course I do. I refuse to apologize for missing Elliott/Christopher Meloni and not because I thought he and Olivia/Mariska should have become a couple, but because she deserved a proper goodbye. I think we all did. I really dislike when television shows just abruptly get rid of a character but hey, that’s Hollywood. I didn’t like it but I’ve moved on. I’m still hoping for a glimpse of Stabler toward the end. I mean, I can certainly dream, can’t I?
That being said, I am looking forward to the new season and most definitely the season premiere! I’m not sure how I feel about Cassidy and Olivia. I don’t see what everyone else seems to be seeing there but, again, I’m not the writer so my opinion really doesn’t matter. Oh, and since age seems to be an issue here, I would just like to say that I am 40 years old. I also sincerely apologize for any grammatical or punctuational errors. #Team Stabler/Benson forever!

  33. I was so sure that the writers would write it as she kills him and then she is on trial for murder. I can’t believe he does to her what he did to that older woman he victimized! And she gives in and begs for her life! That is going to screw her character up completely. Wow! I don’t know if I can watch that happen.

  34. Dale says:

well it makes me not wanna watch svu any more its too sad what happens to olivia or to think what is gonna happen to her.

  35. Me says:

Wow, I don’t even watch this show but this seems gratuitous and nasty. A pathetic grab for ratings.

  36. kimski says:

I watched Mariska Hargitay on the Katie Show yesterday and she is doing so much good for those sexually abused and domestic abuse in real life, actually her and her husband are. I really admire her even more now. I think she is truly one of the good people in the Actting Community really giving back and because of doing the show she has started something so positive with her Joyful Noise and NO More Campaign. We wouldn’t have known about all of the good that she does without the Katie Show yesterday. I DVR’d the episode even though I was watching it because I wanted my daughter to watch it. It was very informative about domestic abuse and rape.
