Philip Seymour Hoffman Showtime Trending DownPhilip Seymour Hoffman will star in and executive produce Showtime’s failed-ad-guy comedy pilot, Trending Down.

TVLine has learned the Oscar-winner will play Thom Payne, who is adrift when his ad agency is taken over. The project is described as a “blistering attack on our youth-obsessed culture and a darkly comic examination of what it means to matter. Or matter not.”

The project was created and written by Shalom Auslander (This American Life), who will executive-produce with Hoffman, Emily Ziff (Capote), Ken Kwapis (The Office) and Alexandra Beattie (Outsourced).

Hoffman took home an Academy Award for his portrayal of the titular author in Capote. His recent film work includes MoneyballThe Master and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire .

Trending Down is the third pilot the premium cabler has picked up this year, after The Vatican and The Affair.

The network is expected to announce the project next week at the Television Critics Association’s Summer press tour in Beverly Hills.
