The two-hour, song-and-dance extravaganza will find Shawn and Gus hunting for a criminally insane playwright named Z (played by Rent‘s Anthony Rapp) who once burned a theater to the ground, with a critic trapped inside.

To get a lead on the psycho Shakespeare, the guys will have to deal with (per the network) “a dangerous and familiar” villain from Shawn’s past who doles out clues in a very cryptic fashion.

In other news, the upcoming eighth (and likely final) season also will include a new episode with a storyline determined by fan vote. Star James Roday will direct that outing, titled “A Nightmare on State Street,” in which an exhausted Gus undergoes dream therapy to understand the cause of his night terrors. But when he’s done with the treatment, everything’s a little… off.

  • Z was supposed to be played by Zachary Levi, but sadly he couldn’t be in it due to Thor. Levi on Psych would equal awesomeness.

  • I feel like we’ve ben told 100x that Maggie will be in “some” of the episodes, Obviously they don’t desire to specify a number. She’ll be in the ones she isn’t not in.

    • She’s to be in at least 5. I remember the number 5 at some point.

    • Yes it pisses me off too lol. It’s like somehow by their constant repetition of it, its starting to sink in that it might really end :(

  • I don’t even watch the show, but if this is the final season, they should announce it already…

  • Isn’t it disingenuous to say the 8th season starts this winter when it’s just the musical episode and then who knows how long until the rest of the episodes? Or has that changed and it really is going to be over the winter season?

    • If I remember right I read that season 8 airs in 2014. They are shooting it now though. The musical is more of a stand alone episode.

      • The musical is only a standalone episode now because the USA Powers That Be took the musical episode, which was supposed to be in season 7, and decided to make us wait for iiiiiit.

  • Great scoop, I can’t wait to see the musical episode in December.

  • My guess is when they say Winter for season 8 they are currently planning on it premiering at about the same time season 7 did, the last week in February or first couple of weeks of March which is technically still Winter

  • I got to attend the musical screening, and I can say with certainty that its the greatest 2 hours EVER. It’s that good. The whole cast is ridiculously talented at singing and dancing.

    • It’s going to be horrible to wait for iiiiiit.

  • USA, you’re not keeping a secret when you say “a dangerous and familiar” villain from Shawn’s past. We already know for a fact that Ally Sheedy is going to be in the episode. The other confirmed guest star is Barry Bostwick, and though he might know Nigel St. Nigel, Barry has never before been in an episode of Psych.

  • I’m soo happy that Despereaux returns, I always loved the episodes!!!!
It can’t end, they wouldn’t do that to us, right? :( And at comic con Maggie said something interesting about Shules, maybe they’re going to get married?! :D I really hope so ^^

  • The 2-part musical episode is really part of season 7 that they held back. They originally planned only 7 or 8 eps but then added a few more. Psych has always been treated poorly by USA (though not as badly as SyFy treated Eureka) – it was never paired with another show and always ran when no other new USA shows were on to cross-promote. And season 7 was held back for a LONG time.

    • Psych used to run right after Monk, and they cross promoted with Tony Shalhoub! But now that Monk is over (and has been for way to many years) they haven’t tried to pair it with another show :(

  • This is such a unique and hilarious show they just can’t end it…it would b sooooooo stupid of the network to disappoint so many fans they need to realize the money maker and the big hit they have on their hands and run with it take advantage of it

  • I think we all sadly know the truth they added 5 episodes cause its the last season but they will do some sort of like 1-6 episode followup 2-3 years from now so lets just hope
