Exclusive: Steve Carell Back for The Office Finale

STEVE CARELLMichael Scott, you sneaky little devil you.

On the heels of another carefully worded denial from exec producer Greg Daniels that The Office‘s May 16 series finale will not feature a return appearance by Steve Carell, TVLine has learned exclusively that the Dunder Mifflin legend will, in fact, turn up in the swan song.

In a conference call with reporters last week, Daniels sort-of-but-not-really shot down speculation about a Carell comeback, saying, “I think Steve felt, and I agree, that the ‘Goodbye, Michael’ episode was his goodbye and he didn’t want to overshadow the ending that all the other characters deserved.”

Possible translation: Carell’s return won’t overshadow the ending.

And by all accounts, it won’t. According to sources, Carell’s return engagement qualifies as more of a cameo than a full-fledged guest appearance. (It’s unclear if Carell will be joined by his Office soul mate Amy Ryan.)

An NBC spokesperson declined to comment, while Carell’s rep insists that the Office finale will be Scott-free.

On Saturday, Carell surprised thousands of Office fans when he joined his former co-stars at a huge “wrap party” held in the real Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  3. Mare says:

    To which the Internet replied-
    ‘Called it.’
But seriously, this is probably the best news I’ve heard all day. Well second best, after I heard I had a new cousin named Harry :)

    • Elly says:

      Congrats on your cousin!

I really hope Michael Scott is a father, that’s the last closure needed for him I think.

  4. Shannon says:

I knew when they kept saying he wasn’t going to be on the finale that he in fact would be on the finale. Nice try but most TV viewers are smarter than TPTB give us credit for. ;)

  5. Kris says:

Yes. YES. I want to see him watching the show and re-living all of the good times he had there and then the show will be complete for me.

  6. Toia says:

    Is anyone surprised?

  7. Sarah says:

Glad to hear this. It wouldn’t feel like a true series finale without an appearance from Steve.

  8. Sarah says:

Went to Office Wrap this weekend, and when he showed, I knew it was pretty certain. SO EXCITED!

  9. Tony says:

It has to be a Michael Scott kind of cameo. Something so bizarre, off the wall, yet well intentioned.

  10. CK says:

I bet we see him flipping off the tv as he was watching the documentary or something like that.

  11. Mike says:

    Great news.

  12. EJ says:

How stupid did they think we were? Pretty stupid, I guess. This was always going to happen.

  13. I think I remember reading, maybe here, that the finale is a “where are they now” party, so of course it makes sense that Michael would show up, even if it’s only a pre recorded message that shows highlights of what’s happened to him.

  14. sarah says:

It was the worst kept secret. Steve denied it too but you had to know he would come back.

  15. sam says:

The again, does anyone remember how the return of Julianna Marguilies and George Clooney on the alleged final season of ER wasn’t even promoted. A few old fans may want to know that the guy will be back.
Ratings starved NBC could use some ratings bump Thursdays at 9!

    • JLK says:

That’s exactly what I said to my husband as they were in deny mode about Carell. ER pulled it off after major denials…I think The Office could make it work too. Since it sounds like he’s barely in it, I think it’s good NBC’s not promoting it. That would probably tick off a lot of people…to watch 60 minutes (plus some if Daniels gets his way) and they don’t see Carell for more than 30 seconds of it.

    • Tiffany says:

I loved that ER cameo! I had told my mom Clooney would show up but she didn’t believe it. Also happy that Steve will make one more Office appearance.

  16. Jason says:

Anyone who believed for one second that Carell would not be in the finale, despite every denial known to man, is a very, very naive person. Oh, and Beyonce is NOT reuniting with Destiny’s Child at the Super Bowl, either. Good grief, people, when will you learn?

    • JB Smooove says:

Right????!! Like Carrell was just “hanging around and visiting” on a closed set last month. smh

  17. RobMF says:

Why just blatantly spoil a cameo that is really important?

    • kavyn says:

I agree, considering how much the writers wanted to keep it a secret until the finale, you could have at least made it a spoiler… even if it was obvious lol.

  18. Steven says:

Am I the only one disappointed by this news. I love Steve, but I hate Michael Scott. he is just the most annoying character on TV. This season of the office has been great without him. I hope it’s a small cameo.

  19. sara says:

    Awesome news!

  20. I’m not saying this isn’t true, but what are the sources? I mean, everyone is still denying this is happening, from NBC, Daniels, to Carell.

If it is true–and I’m sure it probably is–I think it’s actually pretty crappy for someone to have confirmed it to Ausiello when everyone involved with the show clearly wants to keep it secret.

    • elf says:

I think there’s a chance the network ordered it leaked in hopes of increasing viewership.

      • True. If it was approved by the network/showrunners, I think it’s fine. Otherwise, it’s sort of a shame it got spoiled–especially since it’s just on the TVLine main page without a spoiler warning!

  21. Lauren says:

I kind of wish this had been kept a secret. It would have been such a huge surprise to get to see him show up in the finale.

    • macy says:

I agree completely. Why couldn’t they label it a spoiler rather than blasting it on the front page.

  22. Brooke says:

Strange how trying to keep nice surprises a secret gets translated into thinking the viewers are stupid or that they can’t make up their minds.

It’s an odd era we are in as TV viewers where everyone wants to know what happens before it happens. The interview with the Bones showrunner where he assures us Pelant will die eventually and Booth will make things right with Bones stood out as even stranger than things normally are in spoiler-ville. Leave us with SOME suspense, geez! We’re not going to fall apart over the summer. It’s okay to have surprises and things that catch you off guard or leave you wondering for a while.

    • Aaron says:

Agreed. I for some reason had misinformation and told my wife that the finale this season was THE SERIES Finale. Obviously by the time it had ended I had quite a bit of egg on my face. Clearly it has another year to go. I’m not sure what is wrong with we, the television audience, needing these spoilers. I had trained myself into seclusion from the internet back when I was watching new episodes of Lost.

  23. Nathan says:

Such great news! The ‘Scott-free’ Office has been a ‘lesser’ Office for me. Carell’s performance as Michael Scott was SUBLIME – one of television’s finest. That he was never rewarded with an Emmy is one of the great injustices in entertainment history.

  24. Aaron says:

I read this article 4 times and agree that it has no concrete evidence on this news. I keep hearing the finale involves “a wedding”, so we can speculate there will be a switcheroo where we think Dwight is marrying his new farm girl and it turns out to be Angela, OR, it turns out to be Michael and Holly getting hitched. Ideally, it would be Dwight and Angela(as they are clearly hinting towards that rekindling) and we see Michael and Holly slip in the back with a newborn baby. Ideas?

  25. Jesse says:

This is awesome. I am happy with just a cameo. I can totally see like at the very last scene of the episode. Michael coming in to surprise everbody and then nobody end up being there cause ever one left early for the day. That would be funny. With him coming in and yelling “Thats what she said”.

  26. Hi there colleagues, its great piece of writing about
tutoringand completely defined, keep it up all the time.

  27. aryanghetto says:

Thanks for ruining a great surprise just so you can have your precious exclusive.

  28. Kelly says:

    so cool

  29. ccbaxter47 says:

Anyone else think that if Michael Ausiello and the internet were around in May 1990, he would have completely ‘spoiled’ the last scene in the “Newhart” finale? Jeez, what a way to make a living. (And to any snarky responders, my answer will be: “Yes, I realize that…but I think I’ve made my point anyway.)

    • macy says:

No snark here — I agree with you completely. I would have loved to have been surprised while watching the finale.

  30. Abe Froman says:

Awesome! This is probably the only thing that can salvage this terrible season.

    • Ty says:

While season 8 was pretty bad. season 9 has been far better.”new guys”, “Andy’s ancestry” “roys wedding” “livin the dream” “paper airplane” are all great episodes. I do miss Michael a lot though but I wouldn’t call this season terrible at all.

  31. Mari says:

  32. I knew it! Didn’t they say he was there for the finale filming? And if they do it as a “reunion show” it would be easy to imagine that Michael would make the trip. I didn’t believe for a second that he wouldn’t be there but appreciate NBC for trying to keep it a secret. Most of the time they’d hype the heck out of his return rather than letting it be a surprise.

  33. Truefan says:

The show should end with him coming back. That’s full circle and satisfying.

  34. Jake says:

Just because you have the information doesn’t mean you should ruin the surprise

  36. Maggie says:

This is not shocking. I’ve been saying it forever, even before he made the appearance during filming. That sealed the deal for me.

  37. Useful info. Lucky me I discovered your website by accident,
and I am stunned why this twist of fate didn’t happened in advance! I bookmarked it.

  38. JB Smooove says:

im going to file this under the “NO SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT catagory.

  39. Jillian says:

The show has never been the same since Michael left. They tried to make Andy funny and goofy just like him, but it just didn’t work for me.

  40. alprazolam says:

Your means of explaining everything in this post is really
pleasant, all be able to simply be aware of it, Thanks a lot.

  41. viagra says:

Your current write-up offers confirmed necessary to me. It’s quite
informative and you’re clearly really knowledgeable in this region. You have got opened my eyes to numerous opinion of this particular subject using intriguing, notable and strong content material.

  42. RichieS says:

I’m over Michael Scott. What the finale really needs to address is unwrapping the enigma that is Creed.

  43. Peter Gram says:

In my dream world, the finale would of had the whole Office cast fly out to Colorado for him and Holly’s wedding.

    • Robyn Guzman says:

WOW, thanks for the COOLEST finale idea ever…wish I’d thought of it! That being said, I’ll settle for Michael, Holly & their newborn baby slipping quietly in to the last row of seats in the church…and silently mouthing, ‘That’s what WE said!’ into the camera :)

  44. laylagalise says:

Maybe Dwight and Angela get married and he’s at the wedding….

  45. Lady J says:

Yes happy that’s what she said

  46. Susan R says:

I have to confess I stopped watching after they allowed “Michael Scott” to leave. I LOVE Steve Carell. He’s a gifted actor. I did watch the retrospective and the last episode. It was fabulous. When Michael Scott showed up for Dwight, I was so happy! The only part I didn’t understand was Ryan abandoning his baby to run off with Kelly. I know those two characters were self-absorbed, but, this? Maybe it’s because I missed the years since The Office has been Scott free. Anyone have any comments on that?
