Gothica ABC Pilot Chris EganWidespread reports that Tom Ellis was relocating to Downton Abbey as Lady Mary’s rebound lover were not only greatly exaggerated, they were wrong!

TVline has learned that the Welsh actor has actually signed on to star in ABC’s dark soap opera Gothica from Grey’s Anatomy EP Mark Gordon.

Gothica is — as the titled suggests — a modern-day Gothic soap that weaves together the mythologies of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein (Ellis) and Dorian Gray (Egan), among others.

Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) will pen the prospective series, with the aforementioned Gordon producing.

  • Don’t know who this guy is but he looks hot on the picture and Christopher Egan is very good looking. This new show has potential :)

  • Wait so what? Is he going to be on Downton Abbey at all? Or is it like a guest star one episode thing? This article is kinda not clear on that.

    • The article is very clear, it says the RUMORS were WRONG….first paragraph

      • The RUMORS of him being Lady Mary’s new suitor, NOT of him being on the show, which was not a rumor, but stated as a fact. So is he going to BE ON the show OR NOT?

        • No. He only auditioned for the part of Lady Mary’s new love interest. He didn’t get the part and is not going to be part of the show. Yes, several British tabloids reported up to three days ago that he had the part (based on “insiders who know”). Obviously those “insiders” weren’t “inside” enough.

  • I think “the Welsh actor actually has signed on to star in ABC’s dark soap opera Gothica” is about as clear as you can get. He looks like a good match for Gothica. I never liked him for Lady Mary. This new show has possibiities.

    • How is that clear at all? He could sign on to be a star in the show and still guest on DA. And if that’s not the case, how did both TVLine and EW.com, among others, report on him joining DA? The rumor was that he was being a love interest, not that he would star in the show. What kind of oversight happened there?

      • I’m not sure he can do both once he’s signed his contract with ABC.. And Downton Abbey is such an international sensation that I seriously doubt the network would allow him to appear in it for even a guest shot.

  • I’m pretty sure he could do both. Downton Abbey is already filming whereas, besides the pilot, they won’t start filming Gothica until around June (if it’s picked up). Just means he’s unlikely to be a long-term love interest.

  • Good. They need to get Richard Armitage on Downton.

  • Great to see Tom get cast. Absolutely love him in Miranda. Even if the show gets picked up to series I’d be surprised if it has any effect on him appearing in Miranda as I don’t see the next series appearing until late 2014 at the earliest given it was 2 years between series 2 and 3. Also Miranda has a stand up tour, book and Call The Midwife all lined up for next year already so I don’t think she’d have the time to do it yet

  • its not that hard to get the first line clearly says “Widespread reports that Tom Ellis was relocating to Downton Abbey as Lady Mary’s rebound lover were not only greatly exaggerated, they were wrong!” that means that the reports that he was joining the cast of downton abbey were wrong, he isnt joining the cast of downton abbey. i cant believe there is confusion over this.
anyway couldnt care less about boreton abbey, what i need to know is will he be in the next series of miranda? he needs to come back after that cliffhanger ending.

    • That’s because you get people like “Rrrrrr” up above who want to read more into things than are actually there. Or believe the British rags hype (and outright lies).

  • This is the perfect webpage for anyone who would like to find out
about this topic. You realize a whole lot its almost tough to argue
with you (not that I actually will need to…HaHa).
You definitely put a brand new spin on a topic that’s been
discussed for years. Great stuff, just great!
