Shocker: Dallas Poised to [Spoiler] J.R.!

larryhagman_300TNT’s Dallas is taking a page from the original series’ playbook to explain J.R. Ewing’s sudden exit.

According to TV Guide Magazine, the iconic villain — played by the late Larry Hagman — will be murdered by an unknown assailant toward the middle of the show’s upcoming second season. The plot, of course, recalls the original program’s classic 1980 “Who Shot J.R.” cliffhanger.

“We all felt having J.R. die of natural causes would have been completely inappropriate, not only to the character, but also to Larry Hagman,” exec producer Cynthia Cidre told the mag.

As TVLine previously reported, J.R. will be laid to rest Season 2’s eighth episode, slated to air on March 11. The new season kicks off on Jan. 28.

Hagman completed work on a handful of Season 2 episodes prior to his death on Nov. 23 from cancer complications.

Thoughts? Do you agree with Cidre that killing off J.R. is the best way to honor both the character and Hagman? Any early theories as to who pulled the proverbial trigger this time around? Sound off below!

  1. Maybe the same shooter comes back to finish the job, heh.

  2. MrMank says:

I think this is the right move. J.R. deserves a huge exit.

  3. Josh says:

Cant wait for Dallas to return!

  4. GS says:

I’m sorry but it would only be right if Cliff Barnes pulls the trigger. He’s the only one still around that has that big of an ax to grind with JR but they won’t go there since his daughter is now in play. Can’t wait for it to come back although I will miss JR!

  5. May says:

Very fitting for the character. I am thrilled that they choose this route instead of just having him die off screen of natural causes.

    • Lisa says:

I agree, I read also that they asked for Patrick Duffy and Hagman’s son (Preston) for their thoughts and approval – I think it’s a very fitting send off for Hagman and that he’s grinning that JR grin about this tribute

  6. RIPjr says:

    very fitting
    still sad he is gone

  7. TV Gord says:

Of course this is the way he has to go! There’s nothing natural about “natural causes” when it comes to ol’ J.R.!

  8. Scott says:

Maybe it would be a good reason to bring Victoria Principal back..She does the family a favor.

  9. Krista says:

As long as it’s not John Ross, I don’t care! Loving the new Dallas!

  10. Lana says:

This is the only way to go. One last big story for JR.

  11. Samantha says:

Jennie Shoots J.R.! Jennie Shoots J.R! Leann De La Vega has her FINAL Revenge against J.R. for the abortion she had years ago! It’s perfect and will go down in the HISTORY Books!

    • MrMank says:

While most people weren’t watching at that point, that would kind of be awesome if it was Barbara Eden’s character. I am thinking of the right character, yes?

  12. Samantha says:

Barbara was on the final season of DALLAS as an old lover of J.R.’s. named Leann De La Vega. Leann got pregnant by J.R. and felt she was too young to be a Mother and she had an abortion. Abortions weren’t exactly legal and Leann became barren because of it. Leann got her revenge on J.R. and gave Ewing Oil to Cliff but it wouldn’t be enough now would it?

  13. McAmster says:

My birthday will never be the same (November 23rd). We love you Mr. Hagman!

  14. Jason says:

If Larry Hagman were here to ask….he would IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS say that J.R. should die in the most shocking, dramatic, far-out way imaginable.

  15. andrew hass says:

I have no problem if they have JR murdered because it could create more story that way then having him dying from natural causes.I’m sure Larry Hagman would be okay with it.

  16. Dallas Fan says:

Kristen died in the pool at Sf, but Cliff Barnes is the one you found her and said she was dead. What if he help her fake her death. Maybe she has came back to get some revenge and that would help creat another villan for the show. Just a thought

    • dallas forever says:

Kristen “fell” from the balcony of SF and Cliff Barnes found her in the pool. They followed Kristen’s whole life when Bobby and Pamela (Victoria) was trying to find out more about baby Christopher. Since at the time everyone thought that JR was the father. As the story turns out Kristen had a miscarriage of JR’s baby and quickly got impregnated by another guy in order to continue getting large sums of money from JR. Remember folks, Kristen is Sue Ellen’s younger sister. Which means Sue Ellen is aunt to Christopher. I also think that Larry Hagman’s passing is very sad. The timing is a few seasons off but Jim Davis who played Jock Ewing (JR, Gary, & Bobby’s father oops and fathered Ray Krebbs also) also died and they wrote his death into the story line. The story line was that Jock was in Venezuela on business and his plane crashed. A search and rescue team including his sons JR, Bobby & Ray Krebbs searched for him and ended with all 3 boys telling miss elle that Jock was gone. So I believe that Larry Hagman would want HIS character to be killed off in some why that would be in the style of JR Ewing. JR has to many enemies that probably are not dead yet that they could use. they will just have to explore the archives for the right person.

  17. Joe says:

Kristen should come back a finish the job , besides isn’t she Christopher’s birth mother ?

  18. Rob R says:

This is unquestionably what Larry Hagman would have wanted to happen. God bless him for year after year of incredibly entertaiing performances.

  19. Martin says:

I thought they would do it the same way they killed off jrs father jock, the actor playing him died as well, and they had the character die in a plane crash.

    • TV Gord says:

Yes, and they totally messed up that legacy by never finding his body and having two men come back claiming to be him (one in Pam’s infamous dream season). They should have killed Jock dead, but good!

  20. TV Gord says:

This Dallas is too grounded in reality to do something stupid like bring Kristen back from the dead, and I’d like it to stay that way.

  21. Magically Suspicious says:

This seems only appropriate. Having JR Ewing go quietly into the good night seems wrong on all levels. I only hope they do it on a grand scale. Someone of importance to the entire Dallas story needs to be the one that finally kills him…not some random new character we’ve known for three episodes. It should be Cliff Barnes, or Sue Ellen, or even Bobby. Someone that hits a snapping point after years of dealing with JR.

    • TV Gord says:

Cliff seems to be the most logical killer. And the final ignominy for J.R. should be…that Cliff gets away with it! Hahaha (twirling my imaginary mustache).

      • Magically Suspicious says:

And, given the age of the actor and character, it would be easy enough to make that his grand finale. It wouldn’t be too difficult to carry on logically without Cliff. And it would add more fuel to Rebecca’s fire.

  22. Elyse says:

sounds like a JR style death.

  23. Jackie King says:

RIP JR. We will miss you!!!

  24. Gerald says:

Good way for his character to go.
Is John Ross still in trouble with the Mexican Mafia for not getting them thier oil barrels? I think it will be them. Maybe the bullet was intended for John Ross.

  25. Beth says:

    Totally awesome and very fitting!

  26. michael tyler says:

This is a great idea. It hurts to lose this great actor and person. Huge part of my life coming home on Fridays to watch this brilliant show. I would bet Larry hangman is up above us and smiling down with thumbs up at the great send off. Larry will be missed but am thrilled Dallas is continuing in his honor.

  27. gingerbreadmama says:

Yes, J.R. Ewing needs to go down fighting. Love it. RIP Larry.

  28. berlinda arellano says:

yes its very appropriate for him. killing him off any other way would be right

  29. Maddie says:

Love it! J.R. Ewing is such an iconic larger than life character. Larry always had so much fun with the role and I’m sure that he’d want J.R.’s death to be just as outrageous and memorable as his life. No heart attack or car accident here.

RIP Larry and JR. You leave a big stetson to fill!

  30. JBC says:

Great Idea, J.R. is such a great character and Larry Hagman was such a wonderful actor.

  31. Joe says:

I’d like to see either Pam do it or even Katherine Wentworth

  32. eridapo says:

    Loving the spoiler…

  33. shadester says:

i love a good murder mystery. I would be fitting if it was Cliff but i dont want him to leave the show by going to jail.

  34. Linda Papier says:

Hahahaha! I LOVE that you guys know so much and in so much detail about the original Dallas! Yip, I think that JR finally getting shot to death is very fitting. RIP JR. You provided us with many, many years of entertainment. RIP Larry Hagman. What a legend!

  35. Scott says:

Absolutely hope it’s Pam or Leann De La Vega (Barbara Eden). Either would be perfect

  36. Margaret says:

I think this is a good way to end his character, JR will really be missed on this show, I am so loving this show that I set my alarm to make sure I was awake to watch. I would love to see the killer turn out to be the least expected person. RIP Larry Hagman/JR

  37. Linda Tessler says:

It has to be Pamela Barnes Ewing!! Hope they convinced Victoria Principal to come back or at least film a few episodes!!

  38. Mike says:

Katherine would be great and or Pamela! But think there are a few characters in series 2 that could be the culprit

  39. It should be Pam, played by Victoria Principal. She came back and killed him because JR had her kidnapped and locked away all these years so she and Bobby couldn’t have a future together. Oh man, that would be great storyline!

  40. chikita Broussrd says:

Donna and Ray should return to Dallas. Only for Ray to finish beating JR. Are James Bomont, s mother to shot.

  41. Keith Jay says:

I think he should be shot by the jealous husband of a 25 year old he was playing with and nobody knew about. Now that’s the way JR would like to go.

  42. Enrico says:

JR was Dallas his character gave life to the rest of the cast. The new generation of Actors are sub-standard at best, with the old regulars living the end of an era, even television shows its reseveration by airing it on TNT……..the network with more commercials than show. I see it falling apart after the JR demise………….Heres to you JR you were the beginning and the end………..

  43. don says:

You guys are all missing the bus here. It’s going to be Peter Richardson!!

  44. Deb says:

I was hoping with all the footage and audio thru the years, they could patch enough together to keep him on a bit longer. I can’t imagine Dallas w/o JR.

  45. i love dallas its the best show on jr would be proud to be kill off and want a good storyline jr will be yery happy this is the way to go i will miss you jr a true fan always

  46. Ashley says:

Well Harris, the new bad guy was actually a different character in the original series. he was in the looney bin with JR. If you remember JR helped get this guy on tape that he faked being crazy to avoid prison for murdering someone. Because of JR, the guy went to prison for life. So if they were really good writers and wanted a twist, the killer could be Harris and he could have changed his name when he started his new life…

  47. Fred says:

Jr. shot and killed by Dusty Farlow.
