The Office Boss: Retooled Spin-Off Episode Will Still Air – and Change Up the Dwangela Plan

The OfficeNBC may not have bought The Office off-Schrute The Farm, but boss Greg Daniels says we’ll still see a tweaked version of the axed planted pilot before Dunder Mifflin closes shop this spring.

Even better, the fact that Dwight won’t continue in a beet-tastic comedy of his own will likely have a positive (read: meet me in the warehouse) effect on his future with Angela as the series wraps.

NBC passed on the much buzzed-about spin-off in October. But Daniels tells TVLine the Office outing that was intended to serve as The Farm‘s first installment is “a very good episode” and confirmed that it will air before The Office‘s series finale in 2013.

“We’re not going to air exactly what it was, because it has certain aspects that were appropriate for a pilot of a new show,” he says. “We’re going to shoot a little additional material to make it fit into the season more.”

As it turns out, The Farm‘s loss may be Dwight’s gain. Daniels says the show had two scenarios for the oddball assistant to the regional manager: One involved him continuing on the new show (presumably without a certain petite blonde cat enthusiast in tow), the other didn’t.

“We’re into the [latter] scenario,” he says.

  • I’m wondering if they will reverse the results of the paternity test. It seemed like that was thrown in there to give Dwight a clean break from Angela so that he could move to the farm.

    • I always thought Angela had somehow paid off the techs to doctor the results.

          • My conspiracy theory is that the diaper Dwight used was actually from Jim and Pam’s baby, which was there for the photoshoot that day, too.

    • I spoke to someone who’s seen it and he said it wasn’t bad at all. The issue they had was sustainability. They were worried about future storyline and keeping the characters interesting isntead of one-dimensional. If this were England where they’d only plan on making a dozen shows at most then it probably would have been bought, but the American entertainment business being what it is that’s not going to happen.

  • Pleased with the notion of a… happy ending for Dwight and Angela, and also for the chance to view the tweaked pilot.

  • Glad to see Dwangela back together, although I wouldn’t have cried if they’d gone their separate ways at the end of The Office. Kudos to the producer for preparing for all scenarios, and the way they handled The Farm pilot makes a lot of sense. Invest in it, air it even if you don’t pick it up, it’s used. Personally, I didn’t think that Dwight should have gotten his own show, unless they could have surrounded him with characters that were odder than he was.

  • I think it would be great if Angela ended up with Kevin! I liked that subtle smile of hers after he stuck up for her to the senator.
