Vampire Diaries Nina Dobrev Paul WesleyIf you have yet to watch Thursday’s The Vampire Diaries, avert your eyes now. Everyone else, you may proceed…

Though Thursday night’s The Vampire Diaries was dangerous for many of Mystic Falls’ residents, Connor and Elena paid the biggest price.

The hunter was offed by the newbie vamp, who then started to see visions of the word “killer” written in blood. Meanwhile, Damon and Stefan decided not to tell Elena that she killed the one person with the key to a cure for vampirism. (Little do they know, Jeremy’s now got the mysterious tattoo.)

Luckily, the reveals will start as soon as next week, previews executive producer Julie Plec — and that includes Elena getting filled in on all the details. “We don’t linger in the secret land much longer.”

The events of Thursday’s episode lead to what Plec calls “some pretty big moves,” so we’ve broken down all the scoop on what’s ahead, character by character.

ELENA/STEFAN/DAMON | If you’re wondering what an out-of-control Elena’s attraction to Damon means for the trio in the future, Plec advises, “You need to ask, ‘How does it impact the triangle next week?’” For one, after finding out that Stefan made a deal with Klaus, “[Elena] definitely starts next week really super mad at him. Forgiveness and understanding and learning the truth of what he’s up to and what he was up to, all those things are up ahead. We’ll see how she handles it.” As for the brothers, while they found a nice moment of peace, “there’s going to be a lot conspiring against them as all of the aftershocks of the events of this episode start to do their damage.”

ELENA THE KILLER | As the blood-soaked ending of Thursday’s episode hinted, “The consequences of that first kill are pretty profound,” teases Plec. So what’s behind Elena’s disturbing hallucinations? “Killing a hunter comes with a price. There’s a weird consequence to it all that she’s going to have to deal with that takes her to some dark, dark, dark places.”

JEREMY AND MATT | “Right now, it’s just the beginning of [Jeremy] being awakened,” says Plec. “Connor told him he was a potential, and this is a hint that Connor was speaking the truth.” Meanwhile, Matt will continue to be the human voice of reason “as Jeremy struggles with supernatural urges to kill vampires and as Elena’s going down the rabbit hole of the consequences of having killed someone.” (The Gilberts are now also “supernaturally predisposed to be in conflict.”) Adds writer Michael Narducci: “Matt and Jeremy are going to become closer as [Matt] takes on an older brother role to help his buddy, who’s going through these difficult problems.”

Vampire Diaries Phoebe Tonkin Candice Accola Michael TrevinoTHE LOVE SQUARE | Rather than coming in to create relationship drama, “[Hayley] is there for a reason,” explains Plec. “It’s about Tyler’s story and what he, as a hybrid free of Klaus, wants to accomplish on behalf of the people that are part of his pack.” Thinking that something more-than-friendly happened between Hayley and Tyler in the past will “give Klaus this gleeful, perverse little power thing he thinks he holds over Caroline and Tyler and will allow him to be emboldened enough to try to squeeze in there and make a move or two. But when all is said and done, they’re currently pulling one over his eyes a little bit.”

THE PROFESSOR AND THE WITCH | Bonnie’s finally found someone to help her, but the good – or not-so-good – Professor Shane has “an alternate agenda that he’s hiding,” confirms Plec. “We just don’t know if it’s in her best interest or not. A lot of that will start coming to light over the next chapter.” And it won’t be long before he comes into contact with her friends, too. “[He] starts to cross paths with our group next week with some answers. Whether they’re legit or not remains to be seen.”

THE UNLIKELY FRIENDS | Mystic Fall’s oft-compelled resident, April, who Plec describes as “a fun little human folly,” will actually be “our vessel to start getting some answers about that really surprising twist of events at the end of the [season's] first episode. That mystery has yet to be solved, and she will be a part of putting the pieces together.” As for her friendship with the currently staked Rebekah, “that will all pay off down the road with a vengeance.”

THE CURE OF IT ALL | Wait: If there’s a possible way to undo Elena’s being a vampire, what does that mean for the show’s other creatures of the night… and its entire universe? Rest assured, the cure is “going to make our characters ask a lot of questions about themselves… Would they want it? What would they do in order to get it?” says Plec. “It’s going to make them realize, ‘Wait a second. Klaus, this immortal hybrid who’s been relatively indestructible, is there somehow a way to suddenly make him destructible?’ There’s going to be a whole lot of questions asked about what could happen if this cure were to be uncovered and who would go to great lengths to make sure, ultimately, it didn’t fall into the wrong hands.” The characters will also wonder: If killing an Original means taking out all of its offspring, does curing one de-vamp its entire bloodline?  Lest fans get too carried away with what-ifs, Plec points out that “this announcement of the cure, at this point in the narrative, is equal to Katherine [wanting] a moonstone, is equal to Damon’s looking for a crystal. It’s just the beginning.”

KATHERINE, ELIJAH, KOL & MORE | The previews for next week revealed Katherine is finally back (as a hallucination?), but we also haven’t seen the last of Connor. As for the Originals, Plec offers this: “We’re already talking Episode 16 and 17 in the [writers'] room right now, and Elijah’s name is all over the board.” (On a related note: Nathaniel Buzolic, who plays Elijah’s brother Kol, has also been tweeting from Atlanta, where the series shoots.)

  • Are you telling me they killed a threat they built up in a matter of five episodes? That has NEVER happened before on this show. Oh wait..

Too bad the actor wasn’t sending the female audiences hearts aflutter like Klaus did, or he’d be alive, in love with a main character and absolutely boring.

    • You don’t care who she picks…but she want her with Damon haha.

I rather her be by herself. She needs a storyline that’s about Elena…even this vampire storyline is about “her primal desires” for Damon.

    • “Free Stefan” needs to be a thing. He’s so much better when Elena is not around. There was this great scene in this episode where he and Damon were talking about a plan and Elena was just sort of whining in the background and they were both ignoring her. They should do that more often.

  • Tonight’s episode proved why Elena should be with Damon. Stefan pretty much said he wants her human, but Damon doesn’t care what she is. Stefan knows that he can’t be with vampire Elena because she can’t do his bunny diet and he can’t have fresh blood or he goes evil. So, he would rather her be human and Klaus’ hybrid-maker for the rest of her life? How selfish! Damon can be a jerk at times, but I honestly believe he truly loves Elena. He loves her enough to let her go and he loves her enough to not judge who or what she is. Team Damon!

Comment by I Heart Chuck Bass (and Damon Salvatore) – November 8, 2012 07:33 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Stefan wants Elena to be human becausse Elena wants to be human. The season 2 finale(the last time it was really good) Elena laid out why she wants to be human, why she rather die then become a vampire. Stefan wants Elena to live her dreams. He’s willing to let her go. Damon wants her to be a vampire, wants to have this control over her. He doesn’t care what she is, because he just wants her period. Stefan wants to fulfill her wishes, no matter how it makes him feel.

I don’t want her with either brother, but in no way is Stefan wanting her to be human selfish.

Comment by Josh – November 8, 2012 07:41 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Stefan pretty much said tonight that this isn’t the person Elena was meant to be and he doesn’t want her to be this person. He knows that if she becomes human again, she’s going to spend her life being Klaus’ human blood source. But, he also knows that human Elena is the only one who fits him. To me, that’s selfish. How do you condemn someone you love to a life of being drained by Klaus? And how does he know who Elena is “meant to be?” Just because Elena is struggling right now doesn’t mean she won’t get better. Who is he to decide who she can and cannot be? Did Stefan suddenly change his name to Edward Cullen?

Comment by I Heart Chuck Bass (and Damon Salvatore) – November 8, 2012 07:50 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • But Elena herself said “I don’t want to be a vampire”….This isn’t who Elena wants to be. We’ve heard her say it multiple times. She doesn’t want to be a vampire. Her friends don’t want her to be a vampire. Her brother doesn’t want her to be a vampire. Elena wants to have a life and to grow old and die. She has said this before, making your point moot.

And you keep on bringing up “She’d spend her whole life being drained by Klaus”…since when was that the only alternative? There are ways around it..like giving Klaus the cure or do that spell again to put Klaus in a deep sleep, or put him in some cave and do that spell. It isn’t either/or.

      • It’s funny…”De-NIAL” ain’t just a river in Egypt. Instead of bemoaning the circumstance around Elena’s death…rebirth as a vamp…perhaps someone out to remember that her HUMAN life pretty much sucked as the doppelganger. Klaus would never stop coming for her…EVER. Not when she was the key to his hybrids. She’s willing to allow Klaus to amass an army…but she cries over a life lost? At least now…she has some semblance of control. Control over who she is and who she wants to become. Stefan holding on to the pipe dream of humanity…seeing curly haired, doe-eyed babies…who’s dream is it really? At the end of Season 2…Elena was different. She clearly doesn’t value her own life yet she remained a vamp…for Jeremy. Right. For Jeremy. Chose not to live up to her big words of “die rather than become a vamp.” Well…she became the world’s biggest hypocrite there…

Is it not a stretch to believe that when confronted with death…it wasn’t so easy to let go? Once again…Stefan is assuming he knows what she wants.

Comment by Saff – November 8, 2012 08:12 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • She has no control.

And again they could dispose of Klaus. That spell last year pretty much did it until the usual happened with this show and everything was undone.

All evidence has shown Elena would either 1) Want to find away to stop Klaus or 2) Die instead of becoming a vampire. She said it multiple times. MULTIPLE. Never once did she go to Stefan or Damon and say “I change my mind, turn me into a vampire”.

So really, who is in denial? When did Elena once even hint that she wanted go to the Katherine root, which was always easily available. Instead she always choose humanity.

This argument is the biggest problem with the show. The triangle rules all that you can’t have an intelligent conversation without people throwing insults, accusing people of being in denial or just ignoring years of character work because of the Stefan and Damon wars. IMO the love triangle not only runs the plot but the show as well. It’s no fun trying to have a discussion about the show when it comes down to “Stefan is selfish and boring and Damon is her true love!” or “Damon is selfish and crazy, Stefan is her true love!” I like to try and view the character as an independent person. The Elena I’ve witnessed since 1 and in season 3 NEVER wanted to become a vampire. She would rather die for her friends. Yeah Elena grow between season 2 and season 3 but if Meredith(aka the world’s worst doctor) gad given her a choice between death and being a vampire, all evidence points Elena would have chosen to die.

Comment by Josh – November 9, 2012 11:07 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
          • You know if she really would rather die than be a vampire, as you keep telling everyone, there’s a pretty easy solution to that. Just go ahead and let someone kill you Elena. You damn, whiny, worthless human/vampire, waste of space. Clearly she’s not that opposed to being a vampire. If she was we could have avoided a good 3 or so seasons of her terrible whining.

Comment by tripoli – November 9, 2012 08:41 PM PDT
          • Could I just argue one point, no she would not rather die. End of story. She may have said that multiple times but when actually faced with the choice, she chose life as a vampire instead of death. Most of the time, Elena is all talk. She actually fought to complete her transition, realizing that living was more important to her than being human. She literally had to choose between being a vampire or dying, and she chose becoming a vampire, so stop telling everyone else their points are moot and look in the mirror. She did have the choice, all vampires do while in transition, choose to feed and live, or die human, and guess what, Elena did the very opposite of what you’re saying she would do.

      • Did you not hear the part where Damon said that he liked her either way (human or vampire)? Damon doesn’t want to control her. He loves her and wants her to be who she truly is — which seems a lot more like him than Stefan at this point. Although Elena and Stefan are both champion WHINERS.

Comment by MK – November 8, 2012 08:40 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • I think Stefan fighting so hard for Elena is also about him not wanting to subject her/put her through what he (stefan) has been through. But ultimately, its not his decision to make. And in many ways, i feel like he is using her to project all his personal insecurities. Stefan is a great guy. And Damon… well, awesome. But both these brothers need to set their sights elsewhere. At least until Elena develops a spine and doesnt use every episode as a reason to become a basket-case of guilt. In the beginning. I got it. After all these seasons, its just old.

Comment by Naazneen – November 8, 2012 09:41 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Did you miss the part in 4×01 when Damon told her that he wanted a human life for her because that’s what she wanted?

“You would have gotten to grow up and have the life you wanted, the life you deserve… And I wanted that for you, Elena.”

He showed that he was willing to let her go, to live a human life even if that meant that she would eventually die and leave him.

Damon wants Elena to be happy, and he knows she wanted to be human. But he also knows that some people come into their own when they become vampires. I highly doubt Elena would be one of those, she seems to be a Stefan vampire of the self-loathing martyr school. But sometimes she shows a little hint that she might be awesome as a vampire if she gave it a chance.

          • He is not forcing she into anything, It´s pretty clear she doesen´t want to be a vampire, and is not just becouse she is struggling with this life, as a human she made it pretty clear too..

          • Elena seems to be happy when she’s being a vampire…the problem is that she fears to disappoint the ones she loves (Stefan, Bonnie, Jeremy) and that’s why she’s struggling to become a vampire.
I konw she wanted to be human (and a lot of people died so she could still be one for sometime), but she isn’t anymore. She needs to learn how to live this new life. She can be happy and not a killer, she just need to stop living to please the others (Stefan, Bonnie, Jeremy…).
She said Caroline adjusted too easily, but that’s because Caroline embraced what she is: a new form of life and not necessarily a killer. Elena is still living through Stefan’s eyes: a vampire is a monster and that’s why she isn’t happy at her new condition.

I’m not saying here she shoud be with Stefan or Damon….Elena should learn to accept what she is and liver HER life, and not the life others wants her to live.

Btw, why this people don’t go away from Mystic Falls? It’s a lot easier to be a vampire in a big city.

      • This isn’t but a “team” this is about Elena and what she wants. And Elena wants to be human. Stefan is more forceful about while Damon is more “you can become a good vampire”. They both want what they think would make her happiest. Damon is more accepting that a cure won’t happen, while Stefan is more hopeful it will. So neither are wrong.

The fact is Elena wants to be human. Can we just have one thing that isn’t about freaking teams.

Comment by Josh – November 9, 2012 11:15 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • I guess we will all find out the next episode. Maybe if Stefan mentioned it to Elena & not keep it a secret? If Stefan knew this “cure” would “grant Elena’s wishes” he should’ve asked Elena first point blank if she wanted the cure. F the secret. Is he that scared of Klaus? I doubt it. I think he also kept it a secret so Elena doesn’t tell Damon bC he is that selfish. He wants to be human with his GF to make babies and leave his brother out. If he truly felt bad for making his bro finish the transition he would’ve shared it to his brother Damon.

    • I think it’s really sad how Stefan doesn’t seem to have faith in Elena and assumes she’ll become a ripper like him. There IS a lot of projecting going on. Why not support her and try to be more positive and get her through the hard time? Instead he’s giving her all this anxiety and guilt about being a vampire which puts a lot of pressure on her and makes her prone to mistakes. He’s basically creating this self fulfilling prophecy about Elena going off the rails.

  • I don´t like Elena anymore, but I want she to choose Stefan becouse he loves her.. and it breaks my heart seeing him sad.. Besides, if she chooses Damon it will always feel wrong, I mean, she is his brother girlfriend, if my sister would take away the love of my life I´d hate her, and I wouldn´t do that to her either, I´d feel pretty bad.. And on top of it, if after choosing Stef in the season 3 finale, after telling him “no matter what happens it was the best choice I ever made” she has a change of heart that easily (I know now she is a vampire things has changed, but I think not that much) then she is a lot worst than I thought..

  • This show to me at least has never been about Elena choosing Damon or Stefan but about Damon and Stefan being the soul mates of the story. One thing last season succeded in telling was the enduring love between the two brothers. Sure Damon wants Elena either way but he will help because Damon becomes selfless when dealing with his brother and Stefan becomes selfish when trying to keep his brother around. They have continuously chosen each other over Elena and will always.

On this episode alone, ONE: Stefan BACKSTABS his own brother of Vervain to keep this cure a secret Aaalllll to himself so him and Elena can be human (The one thing Damon misses in the whole wide world: HUMANITY) and TWO: (calm down Stefan fans, I’m getting there) Damon almost ripped Stefan’s heart out!! Literally! (Although I wish he did) so NO. Just NO!! THERE is no true love or brotherhood between the Salvatores. Alaric and Damon were tighter & Klaus/Stefan were tighter!! Look! Stefan annoyed me so much this episode acting like the world will end cause poor little weak Elena can’t handle being a vamp. @@ Elena gets this awesome first kill and then what does she do? blame Damon and whine about it REALLY? Say what you want about Damon but I didn’t see Stefan deny about not accepting her as a vamp. Damon is more honest brother imo he is who he is and doesn’t hide it unlike the pathetic Stefan… I like Stefan but he’s really been getting on my nerves this season

  • Could they not just kill off Elena and give Damon the power to see Ghost Alaric and make the sure about them and their wacky ghost and vampire adventuress?

    • I do miss Alaric! And Aunt Jenna! It would have been great to see how Aunt Jenna adjusted after learning about vampires, her story was cut way too short!

Alaric brought the best out in Damon and without him, Damon has become someone that I no longer like. Alaric was the only person in Damon’s life that would call him on his crap. Look at how all of Damon’s relationships have gone downhill since Alaric. I like the idea of bringing Alaric back as a ghost. He could be Damon’s conscience or something.

      • Brilliant idea for Alaric to be Damon’s conscience/ghost friend. That would be so good. I really want Elena and Damon. How can you not love Damon?!

  • I knew that Damon and Elena fans would have a field day with this episode, thinking Stefan was being selfish and that Damon accepts her either way- and make no mistake, Julie knows it too! She continues to dangle Damon and Elena together without letting it go any further. It’s ridiculous and we’re all getting played. Stefan right now is working on what Elena said she didn’t want to be- a vampire. She may have changed her mind but she hasn’t said that yet. So I don’t think there is any controlling reason why Stefan wants to cure her. That being said- PLEASE make Elena have a mind of her own! I have been one to defend her in the past but she has become unbearable. Let her make her own decision about being a vampire and stop letting everyone else control her. I will stay with this show until the end but they need to make some changes.

  • I think that if this show continues down this road – love triangle the main focus every season – that they are really going to start losing viewers. This can’t continue for however many seasons this show lasts. Can we PLEASE focus on something else. Elena getting away from the brothers for a while? The brothers getting away from Elena for a while? Elena is just coming off as pretty selfish. They don’t seem to think that with all her so called empathy she would see what conflict she causes with these two brothers. There needs to be a change.

  • While I love the show (and I’m not a teeny bopper either), I am so over whiny Elena. I hope the show runners get her past this ASAP. It is ruining the show for me. And I’m tired of the back and forth b/w brothers. It’s not fair to either but she’s better with Damon. Too much bouncing around right now. Get the show back on track b/c it’s off the rails right now!

  • I wish they would let Elena become a vampire more like Damon but with a little more regard for human life. I’m afraid that this whole cure thing is going to end up being just enough for one of them and of course, they would give it to Elena & then we get reset back to season 1 and all the whining and protecting poor little human Elena starts anew…

I cannot stand Elena & Stefan together, they bore me to tears. Katherine should come back & be with Stefan, a little evil & a self-loathing martyr and then have Damon & Elena together, that way both relationships could be interesting.

I hope they unstake Rebekah soon, even though she can be a real b*tch sometimes, she was just starting to redeem herself.

Bonnie is just stupid to trust some professor she doesn’t know, especially since he keeps hypnotizing her and she can’t remember what is going on.

  • Doesn’t anyone remember when Elena said to Damon, that if they had met first things would be different? well then later it shows that Damon compelled her not to remember but they did meet first… well i wonder how come when she started to transition did she not remember that.. or if she did then why didn’t that become a big change in the story?

I am totally team Damon! I am annoyed that Elena continues to fight her feelings for him all to be with Stephan. Damon loves her for who she is, either way. Damon is exactly who she needs especially during her freshly made vampire self. He is doing the right things to help her. I believe that he can, so long as no one gets in the way.. anyone who is going to have Elena feeling guilty.

    • She does remember they met first – the show just didn’t show her recalling that via flashback like Damon’s “selfish” ILY. But she did refer to it when talking to him about her transition.

  • Ok seriously people?!? The argument of whether the choices either brother is making for Elena are for her own good etc. are scaring me a bit. Just because someone makes a decision with the idea of it helping someone in the long run in mind DOES NOT mean it is not manipulative. The words each shippers sides are using are the same ones abusers use to justify their choices. Be careful not to lose sight of what the intention of this show is, Entertainment!

  • Elena is such a whiny weak little girl.

Seriously, you killed the biggest threat to your immediate survival and your brothers as well and your reaction? Wah wah wah. Woe is me. Ugh.

Is it so much to ask for a strong self assured heroine?

This show continues to suck balls!

    • jaja I agree! but at least she is now stronger! she confronted Damon about being able to defend herself and she proved it b killing Connor. I think we are starting to see a stronger heroine, one who doesn´t need men telling her how to take her of herself.

  • i agree with the whole whining Elena thing. i do NOT want her to be a human, she finally becomes a vampire and gains a little badass cred and now they want to give her a cure? no. i dont mind that Elena cried after she killed the hunter, they always said she had a lot of compassion, fine. but she’d better get over it fast and not have it drag through the episodes. and with the whole brother thing i’ll admit i am a Damon fan. they say it countless times that Damon and Elena are so much alike, they should just let Stefan move on allready. i like the idea of Stefan and Katherine together, they could have fun together and LIVE, like Damon and Elena could do together. Also i kind of want Caroline and Klaus to get together :S i love Tyler but you can clearly see that Caroline is thinking about Klaus just a little bit. I also really want them to un-stake Rebekah. i wanted to see how the friendship between her and April turned out. those are just my thoughts :)

  • How come we could see Elena in the mirror’s reflection in her room in the beginning of the episode?

  • I think Elena should leave Damon and Stefan alone.

Comment by Alfred – November 12, 2012 06:38 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • It’s just sad that the writers have never followed the book, they are just using the name “Vampire Diaries” and that’s it. If any of you read the books, you would know that Elena became a vampire but a sort of angel as well. She never hurt anyone really and she became human back again. Stefan was always her true love and she ended up with Stefan. All of you need to get over it that Elena and Stefan belong together and will end up together because as other people have pointed out she DOES NOT WANT TO BE A VAMPIRE and she did not really have a choice in becoming a vampire because she did not want to leave Jeremy by himself.

I have to hand it to the writers though that they come up with their own storylines because none of it has anything to do with the original books anyways. Oh well, one can only hope that they will become true to the book and at some point follow it but I doubt it which totally sucks.
