Fox has ordered a third season of the reality singing competition, it was announced today by Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

“This season, Simon and the producers of The X Factor took an already strong show and made it absolutely fantastic,” said Darnell, in a release. “The format changes are working, the contestants are unbelievably talented, and [new judges] Britney [Spears] and Demi [Lovato] – alongside Simon and L.A [Reid] – have brought an incredibly fun new chemistry to the judges’ panel that our fans really love. We feel great about the show and I’m thrilled to bring it back next year for Season 3.”

“I couldn’t be happier about The X Factor already being renewed for another season,” added Cowell. “Our main commitment will always be to find great talent, and let’s not forget, we are now days away from our first live shows. The gloves are off! Expect fireworks!”

Season to date, The X Factor is averaging a 3.9 rating among Adults 18-49 and 10.6 million total viewers.

A one-hour installment of The X Factor‘s baseball-delayed Top 16 announcement episode airs Tuesday at 9:30/8:30c. Those contestants will take the stage for the season’s first live show on Thursday, Nov. 2 (8:00-10:30 ET), with a special Sunday episode slated for Nov. 4 (8/7c).

  • This season has been fun with Britney and Demi on the judging panel (and they’ve both been doing so good!). I hope they are sticking around for next season too.

  • Britney and Demi have definitely been better than Paula and Nicole.

  • SO happy! I’m a big Britney fan, but I dont know if shes coming back…
And according to THR, the show is in the “top 15 of network series among adults 18-49 and 18-34″. TV ratings this season are really bad, lol

  • My suspicion is that there was an inflexible 3 season contract between Fox and Syco, signed under the pressure to keep XFactor off other networks.
So this announcement isnt what it appears to be, its not a validation of XFactor as a success, its just more pretending to go along with the smoke, mirrors and lies that the production has embodied from day 1. Remember, “Stereo Hoggz, tonight i think you are the best band in the world.”
Aint no way there will be a fourth season.

    • The ratings are pretty solid. Even if there was a contract, the network would be crazy not to renew.

  • Remember when Simon said that “anything under 20 million viewers would be a disappointment?” Lolololololol

  • Does this not seem like Fox’s way of kissing and making up with Syco after the big muck up last week? Happy news, but only if Britney and Demi are attached to the third season. Such an improvement over Paula and She Who Makes It All About Her (just ask the other members of PD!)
