What to Watch Tuesday: Emily Owens Scrubs In, New Covert Missions, Presidential Debate & More

On TV this Tuesday: Emily Owens, M.D. makes her bright and untwisty debut; Covert Affairs and Flashpoint start up again; a Boss marathon catches you up and Obama and Romney are the guests of honor at a town hall meeting. As a supplement to TVLine’s original features (linked within), here are 10 programs to keep on your radar tonight.

10 am – 7 pm Boss marathon (Starz) | It’s National Boss Day, so celebrate with Mayor Tom Kane! Catch up on all episodes from the drama’s Season 2 before Friday’s season finale.

8 pm Raising Hope (Fox) | In the conclusion of a two-part episode, Virginia begins to agree with the authorities: Maybe Maw Maw is better off in a state-run nursing home. Also, Jimmy hopes to stave off Alzheimer’s Disease with some tips he gleans from the home’s elderly residents.

8 pm Hart of Dixie (The CW) | Unhappy that her alumni magazine has her listed as “retired,” Zoe invites the reporter to Bluebell to set the record straight. (My advice? Maintain the “retired” status, Z. Keep your classmates guessing.)

9 pm Emily Owens, M.D. (The CW) | Series premiere: On her first day as an intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, recent med school grad Emily (The Good Wife‘s Mamie Gummer) has run-ins with both her crush (Smallville‘s Justin Hartley) and her high school nemesis (Aja Naomi King). If you’re thinking the set-up sounds like a bubblier Grey’s, you’re not wrong. Kelly McCreary (White Collar), Necar Zadegan (24) and Michael Rady (Melrose Place) co-star.

9 pm Presidential Debate (All major networks) | Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama answer questions in a town-meeting format at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. CNN’s Candy Crowley moderates.

9 pm The Men Who Built America (History) | This four-part series, launching tonight, chronicles the effect Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford had on the United States and its position as a global superpower.

10 pm Sons of Anarchy (FX) | Jax brings a new proposal to the club, with serious consequences.

10:30 pm Our Longest Drive (Golf Channel) | Premiere: This unscripted series follows three golf buddies as they take a fourth pal – who happens to be deceased and cremated – on a 5,500-mile RV trip to the Arctic Circle to play one last round of golf.

  • If it wasn’t for who her mother is, Mamie would have never got a leading role in TV show. The girl is mediocre actress and very average looking.

    • I hate to admit it, but I kind of agree. But she seems nice enough and the show looks cute so I may check it out on Hulu over the weekend if I have some time to kill.

    • I can see how one may think that at first (and I’m sure she is aware of the huge potential for people to say that); but she is an accomplished actress in her own right and I think she is very talented. If it was only for who her mother is, she’d be on the big screen in movie after movie (she’s almost 30), but she’s not, she is the lead on a CW series. I know that’s still pretty good but I do think she got there on her own merit. She is certainly talented enough to go further but she will do so on her own. I know her looks are unconventional meaning not the cookie cutter type of beauty we are accustomed to seeing these days, but she has charm and charisma and I think she is quite pretty.

  • Mammo Gummo, thats what I call that very unattractive Emily Owens “actress”, is NOT MEREDITH GREY! Girlfriend needs to stop trying to be something shes not. Didnt like her on her previous shows not bothering here either.

I think she should just go get a behind the scenes job for her mother.

    IMHO.

  • I watched the series debut of Emily Owens on YouTube. It is a watered down Greys Anatomy. It starts with Emily on her first day as a surgical intern, just like Greys. It has voiceovers from the main character, just like Greys. It has a tough female boss that is responsible for the interns, just like Greys. It goes on and on. The main downfall? The lead actress is in about 95% of the scenes and talks to herself more than the other characters. DOA.
