Glee Bette MidlerThe Divine Miss M may soon grace Glee with her presence.

Ryan Murphy took to Twitter Monday night to announce that while at the God’s Love We Deliver Golden Heart Awards ceremony that same evening, he “asked the incredible Bette Midler to be on Glee in front of 1,000 people.” Her response? “Bette said yes!”

The prolific producer went on to say that he was already “plotting” her cameo and asked his followers for suggestions on who she should play. (Midler also took to Twitter with the news, pitching to her potential boss the role of Rachel’s grandmother… Thoughts?)

• Raising Hope has enlisted Christopher Lloyd to partake in its upcoming Back to the Future-themed installment. TVLine has confirmed that Doc Brown himself will end up in the DeLorean at some point in the episode, which centers on a loan collector (Lloyd) going after the Chances for some old debt.

  • I saw this on another site, but I like the idea of Bette playing Artie’s grandmother involved with him applying to film school or something like that. If she has to go on the show, I want her to play someone connected to someone who hasn’t received the celeb guest treatment yet.

    • Artie is not important enough to get a guest star.

      • Artie was important enough to be at the forefront of multiple episodes (Wheels, Dream On) and to be at the center of B-plots (like Yes/No) and Javier Bardem was in negotiations to guest for an Artie storyline before they fell through due to his schedule. If Blaine can get Matt Bomer for an episode stint as an underdeveloped character, Artie can get Bette for an episode. Highly doubting Bette will commit for more than one episode, anyway.

      • lol irl, this is the show that had matt bomer guest star for blaine. importance is clearly not an issue.

      • Guest stars aren’t always doled out by character importance. Matt Bomer’s stint is a good example of that. It ended up being more about showcasing Bomer than about developing Blaine.

      • Did you forget that Becky Johnson got Helen Mirren?

    • That sounds like a pretty good idea, actually.

    • Ooh, that kind of sounds intriguing. I’d like that, mostly because I want Midler to be attached to someone with strong vocals.

    • Not going to lie, I’m intrigued by the potential of seeing one of the ND kids wanting to do something more removed from performing.

    • I want either this or for Katey Sagal to play his mother like she wants to.

Comment by Ron – October 16, 2012 12:43 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Fun fact: Sagal used to sing back-up for Bette.

  • The age difference between Rachel’s dads and Bette in the looks category aren’t far enough apart for Bette to be Rachel’s grandmother. I could see her being a relative of Brittany. Have we met any of Brittany’s family yet?

Comment by Randi – October 16, 2012 11:49 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • We haven’t met anyone for Brittany but I was kind of hoping for Lisa Kudrow or Leslie Grossman for her mom.

Comment by Babs – October 16, 2012 11:59 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Yes for Lisa Kudrow to be Brittany’s mom. Would be HILARIOUS!

      • Lisa Kudrow would be perfect. Great idea.

  • Anybody not related to Rachel at all. It doesn’t ALL have to be about Rachel.

  • Bette Middle needs to be Rachel Berry´s grandmother, Shelby´s mother. Bette Middler and Lea Michele are Broadway actreses and singers. Any other character for Ms. Middler will be a waiste. So much potential in this storyline and a closer to Rachel´s mother side. She needs roots…well you have it Rachel

    • *Waste, and no she doesn’t. She doesn’t need to be pigeonholed into being part of Rachel’s already packed story line and we really don’t need the Shelby connection rehashed for a third time.

  • If Bette Midler wants to be Rachel’s Grandmother than Rachel’s Grandmother she will be. Do NOT disappoint RIB. Midler is better than you deserve. And I’d love to see Midler as a NYADA Professor. Since that has been a wonderful vehicle for Guest Stars Whoopi and Kate Hudson.

Comment by Ace – October 16, 2012 12:23 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Bette Midler never said she wanted to be Rachel’s grandmother, she said that it was one of the suggestions she had heard (“Ok, @rpmurphy, I have one vote for Rachel’s grandmother…hmmmm. I’m thinking, I’m thinking!!”). Reading comprehension is your friend.

Comment by DivineMFan – October 16, 2012 12:30 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Re-Read the story. It says BM PITCHED the role of Rachel’s Grandmother. I went by what the site said love. K.

  • When has this show let something as trivial as age stop them from doing anything, lets not forget that Cory Monteith’s age is closer to Matt Morrison than to the rest of the “kids”

  • what happened to Bardem and Hathaway coming on Glee?

Comment by Michael Sacal – October 16, 2012 12:31 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I think Bardem fell through because of scheduling and Ryan forgot about Hathaway. Hathaway herself said she was never contacted again.

  • As long as Bette is singing I don’t care who she plays.

    • I’m still annoyed that Gloria Estefan didn’t sing.

  • God, she looks awful.

  • Bette is a LEGEND..but why cant she play a character related to ANYONE else but Rachel..Kurt..Finn. Its time to beef up the recurring characters storylines.
