Hannibal Scoop: L.A. Complex Actress Will Bring Her Wonderfalls Character to Lecter's Realm

Hannibal may be no match for the likes of a former high school queen from Niagara Falls.

Bryan Fuller, the man behind both NBC’s gruesome mid-season drama and the 2004 Fox cult hit Wonderfalls, announced Thursday via Twitter that Chelan Simmons would bring her chirpy ‘falls character — Gretchen Speck-Horowitz — to his new project.

“THRILLED to be working again with @ChelanLSimmons and TICKLED her character is crossing over to #Hannibal,” the writer and executive producer tweeted, along with a photo of Simmons.

Wonderfalls fans will remember Simmons’ alter ego, who was president of her high school class and a torment to protagonist Jaye (played by Caroline Dhavernas), as the woman who called herself “a Christmas and Easter Jew.” As the result of a talking rooster encouraging Jaye to “destroy her” (long story), Gretchen decided to end her marriage to a man she didn’t love.

We’ll see what became of Gretchen during the Hannibal gig, which is a reunion of a sort. As previously reported, Dhavernas will play the female lead – Dr. Alana “Al” Bloom – in the series based on Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon novel.

Simmons currently portrays The L.A. Complex‘s Alicia, and her television credits include Kyle XY, Psych and Men in Trees.

Hannibal is slated to debut at mid-season.

  • This is the strangest crossover news I’ve ever read. Though I do approve.

  • I wouldn’t say she “currently” portrays Alicia on The L.A. Complex, since her character left in the second season premiere and has been gone ever since…

    • I hope she returns, I liked her character and she can’t be on a dance tour forever.

  • Singer should run this as Hannibal for an episode or two, then reveal it as Caroline Dhavernas’ dream sequence and– bang– Wonderfalls is back on the air!

  • “Christmas and Easter Jew” still stands as my favorite line from any TV show ever.

  • Sad. I guess this means she definitely won’t be back if The LA Complex somehow manages a season three. I loved that porn star/stripper. My favourite line of dialogue this year is still “of course I’ve slept with a woman, what am I amish?”

  • Anyone know what capacity Chelan’s character will serve on the Hannibal show? Regular, recurring, guest spot? I’m still hoping for her come back on The LA Complex. Her storyline was one of the best on the show, which we don’t often get to see (sex tape, porn)

  • Bizarre, but awesome. Any chance of Chuck and Ned from Pushing Daisies showing up too? Just think of the possibilities of having Ned around to revive a cannibal’s victims…. This would definitely have to be a 10pm show!

  • I don’t remember her from that show but I do remember her getting fried in the tanning bed in Final Destination 3.
