Fall TV Preview

The Scandal Premiere: 12 Quick Observations

We’ve reached that glorious time of year when the networks start letting loose with screeners of returning shows’ season premieres. Last week, I covered Castle’s super-intense, super-sexy Season 5 opener. Today, it was Scandal‘s sophomore premiere (airing Thursday, Sept. 27) that showed up on my cyber-doorstep.

Here, quickly, are 12 not-at-all-spoilery observations about what’s new with Olivia and her gladiators.

* I can’t even go near the opening scene. So damn spoilery. Sorry. Moving on…

* With Bellamy Young’s promotion to series regular status apparently came, as Bubba might put it, an even bigger set of brass for First Lady Mellie. Holy….

* Someone is behind bars as the hour opens.

* You will learn Quinn Perkins’ real name (as well as a less-than-affectionate nickname).

* I believe we get to the 9-minute mark before people stop talking. Love the rat-a-tat dialogue.

* In their latest clash — one that, Olivia is warned, “could end you” — David Rosen goes after Pope & Associates no holds barred. Welcome to series regular status, Josh Malina!

* Earmuffs, Obama! Olivia at one point notes that the U.S. economy “is in a free-fall.” Eep.

* Yes, President Grant dodged the Amanda Tanner mess — at great cost. But since then, he has seen his approval rating dinged by another PR blunder. That leaves him tempted to pull the trigger on an iffy political move that could regain him some glory. Guy could really use some special counsel about now….

* OK, OK, OK…. You want to know if any POPUS (Olivia Pope + POTUS) goodness is coming. Well… did you read our Fall TV Preview nugget? ‘Tis accurate. That said: Gleaning that Cyrus has spoken with Olivia makes Fitz literally stop. in. his. tracks. Which has to count for something.

* Someone has the audacity to fire Olivia Pope aka She Who Gets Things Handled.

* Jimmy Kimmel cameo!

* Regardless of where you live, did you hear someone off in the distance shout, “Whoa!” at or around 3 pm EST? That was me, as the very final scene played out. Yep, Scandal is looking as twisty and juicy as ever.

Will you be tuning in for Scandal Season 2?

  1. Really excited. This sounds great! So thankful ‘Fall TV’ is starting up again next week because my schedule is annoyingly empty (what with almost all the summer shows having finished). Good times ahead!

    *dances around*

  2. Janey says:

I am so excited for the return of Scandal, and now even more so having read this! Do we know how many episodes S2 is going to have? I’m worried that it will suffer if it’s a full season. Mini-series work so much better for a show like this (and Political Animals).

  3. Carla says:

Do they address Henry Ian Cusick’s absence? Or did they pull a Fringe-esque “he never existed”? (Like how I tied those together? ;) )

  4. Julia says:

Yes!! I will definitely be tuning in. Sounds like a delightfully twisty premiere!

  5. Manie says:

HELL YES I’m excited! Best new series of 2012 for sure! And I’m glad it will only have 13 episodes. That series format is usually a winner and the storylines aren’t carried on forever like it usually happens with 22 episodes! :D

  6. Julio P says:

I love this show so damn much. Olivia Pope FTW.

  7. Emily says:

Scandal was a surprise treat last year. I only watched it because I was bored, but it became one of the very few new shows I kept on my watchlist. I’d like them to stop speaking in the same inorganic/long-winded Shonda-ese Grey’s Anatomy uses, but I consider that minor.

  8. Kel says:

I’m very excited. I loved the first 7 episodes and can’t wait to see what’s next. Also, been dying to know who Quinn is!

  9. Regina George says:

Gretchen, stop trying to make POPUS happen. It’s not going to happen.

  10. llws88 says:

  11. Velvet says:

    Not interested.

  12. Ace says:

Matt, you’re adorable, and you do a good job. Thanks for scoping things out for us. (-:

  13. CoCo says:

    I. Am. SO. Excited! Thanks for the scoop, Matt. Does Mellie have some baby drama up her sleeve?

  14. Mindy says:

“Olivia Pope aka She Who Gets Things Handled”—>LOL, Love it! Loved all of it!!

  15. moobear says:

I don’t want to turn this into a political thing (I watch both Fox News and MSNBC, now NBCnews, and saw both RNC and DNC), but did you see Kerry Washington at the DNC, she was pretty awesome, much better then Scarlet Johanson (sp?).
Any which ways, awesome scope, and I really hope everyone gets out and votes for whoever you want, just vote!

  16. Balaji K says:

I watched the first season. Too much over-acting and talking. I dropped the show from my list this season.

  17. honeybee says:

Without spoilng, can you tell me if Goldwyn’s character is stronger…. His is the weakest character of all main characters and ironically he is the president….He is completely deballed….

  18. Christina says:

Hell yeah!!! ‘will I be tuning in’? I’ve been waiting this premiere since the Olivia turned in her badge last season. I want it! If it gets leaked I’m down loading it and any viruses attached.

  19. Minsedona🌵 says:

SCANDAL is a show I won’t be able to enjoy as I hate the speeded up talking in the show!! I everyone on speed or are shows too long to fit in the commercials ?? I think it just might be a good show if it wasn’t for all the “antzy speedy talking”.
