NBC Stages Will & Grace Reunion on Smash as Sean Hayes Joins Season 2 Cast

Sean Hayes SmashWill and Karen are going to be so jealous!

Smash has cast Sean Hayes in a multi-episode Season 2 arc, reuniting him with his former Will & Grace co-star Debra Messing.

Per NBC, Hayes will play Terrence Falls, a comedic television and film star who is making his Broadway debut in the musical Liaisons, based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

Due to a series of comic circumstances, he becomes a major thorn in the side for Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty) and other characters (one of whom, presumably, will be Messing’s Julia).

NBC is keeping Hayes rather busy these days. The actor-producer is also set to recur on Up All Night as an accompanist who worked with Maya Rudolph’s Ava.

      • Aww, why not? She’s a fantastic comedic actress, and classically trained vocalist! Sure it would be campy to have her just as a W&G throwback gimmick, but she really could add something of value to Smash!

  • Sounds like they’re all but starting over with Smash during season 2. I liked/loathed season 1 – it was an entertaining trainwreck. Hopefully things come together during the second season.

  • Oh, this is nice! I so loved Will and Grace. Was already happy to see the wonderful Debra Messing on my screen again (even if Smash had lost of ups and downs), bringing some other W&G stars on here will definitely increasy my interest in the second season. Megan Mullally could be amazing on this show!

    • I’d love Sean and Debra to do a sitcom as man and wife. They were the best part of Will & Grace.

  • Ugh. He grates so badly on my nerves — I’d rather have all the guys they fired from season 1 back, and I was delighted to see them go.

  • Oh great another character that hates Ivy. How original for this show. Girl can’t catch a break…

    • The article never actually said that he’d hate Ivy, just a thron in her side. If anything, I actually see it being the other way around probably. Like his comedic antics getting on Ivy’s nerves in some way or she gets stuck “babysitting” him in the sense, because he’s new to the broadway scene. Guess we’ll have to see.

  • If they ever make a film about the life of Donald O’Connor, Sean should play the lead.

    • Even when she sings to be funny, it’s good. I just saw the episode of Happy Endings she was on where she sang Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn, and it was HILARIOUS.
