What to Watch Sunday: Three Finales, Fresh Hell, a Shark Attack, an Animal Practice Run and More

On TV this Sunday: The Olympics torch gets snuffed, Longmire and The Glades gun for their season finales, Hell on Wheels gets rolling again, comics do to Roseanne what she once did to the national anthem and NBC monkeys around with a new comedy. As but a supplement to TVLine’s original features (all linked within) here are 11 programs to keep on your radar tonight.

8 pm 2012 Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony (NBC) | And just like that, the flag is passed to Rio de Janeiro. After the London games come to a close, stick around for a sneak preview of Animal Practice, the Peacock’s new sitcom starring Justin Kirk (Weeds) as an anti-social veterinarian, Joanna Garcia Swisher (Better With You) as an ex who re-enters his life and Crystal the monkey (Community) as Dr. Rizzo – ’nuff said. (Animal Practice is scheduled to begin at 10:30, but you know how these things go; you might want to give your DVR a little leeway to make sure you grab the whole episode.)

9 pm Hell on Wheels (AMC) | Season 2 premiere: Cullen adjusts to life after Hell on Wheels, and Durant dispatches Elam to deal with a posse robbing his payroll. Check out a preview here, and catch up with HoW‘s freshman run via a marathon that begins at 11 am.

9 pm Air Jaws Apocalypse (Discovery) | The cabler’s 25th Shark Week festivities kick off with this hour-long profile of Colossus, a 3,000-lb. flying (!) Great White.

9 pm True Blood (HBO) | The Authority attempts to get the public on its side, despite the increasing number of vampire attacks on humans; Nora tries to convert Eric to see things Lilith’s way; Jason finds a mysterious scroll. 10 pm Longmire (A&E) | Season 1 finale: The arrival of a Denver detective (played by Roc star Charles S. Dutton) forces Walt to confront what really happened in his wife’s death. (Yep, already renewed!)

10 pm Breaking Bad (AMC) | Walt’s team must get creative to obtain the materials it needs to continue the operation.

10 pm Roast of Roseanne (Comedy Central) | Ellen Barkin, Wayne Brady, Gilbert Gottfried, Carrie Fisher, Seth Green, Katey Sagal and at least one surprise blast from the guest of dishonor’s past are among those who’ll take shots at the self-described “domestic goddess.” Glee’s Jane Lynch hosts.

10 pm Weeds (Showtime) | From the network: “Nancy scores big on the first day of her new job.” Somehow, I don’t think they’re talking about getting a great parking space or an office with a window.

10 pm Political Animals (USA Network) | Like most working mothers, Elaine finds herself torn between staying by her ailing child’s side… and handling the rescue of a Chinese submarine. Meanwhile, Douglas is poised to cross a boundary that could jeopardize his future. Fringe‘s Blair Brown guest-stars as Susan’s mother.

Doesn’t the flag get passed to Sochi?

    • Ayana says:

Sochi is where the Winter Games are going to be.Since this is the Summer Games and the 2016 Summer Games are going to be in Rio,the flag is passed to them.

  2. Rachel says:

Blair Brown on Political Animals!! So many badass women on one show!

  4. sonja says:

Sochi will host the winter games not summer. Summer goes to summer and winter to winter.

  5. Britta Unfiltered says:

“Animal Practice??” “The animals are the patients.” “Oh. That makes sense.”

  6. TV Gord says:

I loved the Animal Practice pilot! The characters are funny and fun, especially Betsy Sodaro as Angela. Incredibly, she wasn’t supposed to be a regular member of the cast! I think she’s going to be a breakout of this coming season!

  7. Lorie says:

Longmire! We finally learn more about Walt’s secret.

  8. Amy says:

Good thing we have 2 DVRs! I have the Glades, leverage, falling skies, drop dead diva, true blood, breaking bad, and longmire! Something for everyone in our house! I refuse to mention big brother

  9. Martin says:

True Blood, Falling Skies, Political Animals, Animal Practice.

Who ever thought that, at least until the latters plan in revealed, that eric would be the hero of the story and bill the villain. Can’t wait fir True Blood tonight, know Eric isn’t going to die but hope they don’t kill Molly, and it’s not a veronica mars thing either even though I liked that show, it is because Molly is a cool character.

    • icywinter2 says:

I don’t know if Bill will be a villian, for all we know he might be faking it just to set up the out of control authority.

We don’t know anything until two episodes from now which will be finale. I can’t wait to see what happens tonight, I just hope Bill or Eric stakes Salome. She is the real villian and needs to be stopped.

  10. nitemar says:

Hell on Wheels and Longmre! and Drop Dead Diva later on Demand. :)

  11. Brandy says:

    Drop Dead Diva

  12. Metallicangel1 says:

Leverage on TNT at 8pm! That is my must see tv.

  13. Templar says:

Quit trying to make Longmire happen. The most across the board depressing show on TV.

  14. Nick says:

The great escape, Olympics, good luck charlie, & maybe give animal practice a shot

  15. Wrstlgirl says:

Big Brother, The Glades, Falling Skies, Army Wives, Longmire, True Blood, Political Animals, Breaking Bad, Hell on Wheels. Sunday is a huge night for TV in this house.

  16. TMW says:

Animal Practice looks hideous. Justin Kirk can’t carry a show, even with a monkey on his back.

  17. Juliab. says:

Longmire and Hell On wheels for me.

  18. Linderella says:

Recording the closing ceremonies and live watch Falling Skies, the best summer show ever!

  19. nick1372 says:

Watching the Olympics, and DVRing the Newsroom.

  20. icywinter2 says:

    True blood

  21. jena says:

I too will be watching TNT. Love Leverage, and also love Falling Skies. I’ve even found myself watching The Great Escape from time to time. (I like it that it’s done at the end of the hour, it doesn’t continue the following week, each episode is self-contained.)

  22. TheBeach says:

Sundays are always my favorite night for TV. It seems always put their best on Sunday. My DVR always gets a hard workout.

  23. theresa says:

Watching Big Brother, Falling Skies & Newsroom. DVR True Blood, Weeds, Episodes & Politcal Animals.

  24. The premise of Animal Practice sounds like the kind of gag show referenced within a show, like the show about the talking dog in Episodes. Dr Rizzo, really? Come on, NBC. It’s crap like this why you’re in last place. You’ve become the 21st Century version of early 90s Fox. You’ll air whatever stupid thing that comes to mind in the hope that it’ll be a hit.

  25. Sil says:

Hell on Wheels and Longmire are a necessity in my household. I like and watch The Glades some. I’m just not into vampires or the animal shows. Political Animals might be a new have to watch.

  26. M3rc Nate says:

I cant help it, Hell on Wheels is gross now that the blonde brit is sleeping with the quasi-bad guy. I hate shows that start off with a great character setting up a romance (obviously at some point Cullen and her will get together) and they ruin it in the second season or third by having her be with some gross guy. Otherwise i LOVE the show, but i just watched all of season 1 on netflix for the first time a few days ago, so the taste is fresh in my mouth of how awesome/sweet she was, and how she had the perfect marriage to a nice guy…her dead husband would be rolling in his grave if he knew who she was banging (not even in a relationship it seems). The guy he despised.

    • TV Gord says:

Is it possible that you’ve completely missed the point of why she’s with him? You should go back and watch it again from the beginning.

      • M3rc Nate says:

Ya so she lives a higher end lifestyle? Instead of making her own and accepting what shes got, shes sleeping her way to the top? She could have been “with” him like in season one but never slept with him. You could tell she wasnt pleased with going back to bed with him at the end of the episode…so lets recap, shes not in love, she barely likes the guy (scene where he says whores are worth less than horses and shes disgusted), and like you mention, to have a better lot in life shes sleeping with him. What point did i miss? That she went from a gorgeous sweet loving wife in a romantic good marriage with a husband that died for her, to a woman that sleeps to get ahead? works with the scum her husband despised to have a better lot in life?
