FX Picks Up Keri Russell Drama The Americans

Get More: News

The TV Gods have answered our my prayers: Keri Russell is headed back to the small screen.

FX has placed a 13-episode order for The Americans, a Washington DC-based period drama starring the Felicity actress and Brothers & Sisters‘ Matthew Rhys.

The ambitious project, from Joe Weisberg (Falling Skies) and Graham Yost (Justified), is set in the early ’80s and centers on two KGB spies, Phillip (Rhys) and Elizabeth (Russell), posing as married Americans in suburban DC. Despite their arranged union, the couple’s bond grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War. Tensions also heighten upon the arrival of a new neighbor, Stan (Noah Emmerich), an FBI agent working in counter intelligence.

“We’re proud to welcome The Americans, a taut series that crackles with incredible performances rooted in character perspectives never explored on a U.S. television series, to FX’s line up of quality dramas,” said FX president John Landgraf in a statement.

This marks Russell’s first full-time series gig since the cancellation of her short-lived Fox comedy Running Wilde two years ago.

    • Okay, scratch that. Nothing bad that wasn’t made by Ryan Murphy.

      • Whenever Ryan Murphy’s name is attached to a show, that is enough for me not to watch it.

        • Except American Horror Story is fantastic! If you watched it, you’d really question if the same creator of Glee made AHS.

        • Not beyond the first season, anyway. He’s great for the first season (see Glee, Nip/Tuck), then he goes off the rails.

      • Damages? Dirt? The Riches? I’d say they’re all pretty bad…

        • Dirt wasn’t great, but it was fun fluff. I never actively disliked watching it.

        • Dirt wasn’t great, but it was fun fluff. I never actively disliked watching it. Damages and The Rches were both great in their first seasons, and still very watchable in a “Dexter seasons 3-5″ way after that.

  • This was a no-brainer.

The FX president needs to learn how to spell “taut,” though.

    • Unless they have done some editting since your comment, “taut” is correct:

      taut[ tawt ]
      adjective taut·er, taut·est.
      1. tightly drawn; tense; not slack.
      2. emotionally or mentally strained or tense: taut nerves.
      3. in good order or condition; tidy; neat.

    • i am guessing too it is their version of that series on showtime……but with russian spies and the new fbi neighbor will start to think they are spies and will try to prove it.

  • The premise has enough similarities to Homeland to pique my interest and enough differences to maintain it. Plus, FX gives us quality programming more often than not. So I’ll definitely be watching.
