Exclusive First Look: Sienna Miller and Toby Jones as Hedren and Hitchcock in HBO's The Girl

Brit stars Toby Jones and Sienna Miller play Hollywood icons Alfred Hitchcock and Tippi Hedren in The Girl, an upcoming HBO movie about the relationship between the master of suspense and his notable leading lady.

And if you thought Hitchcock’s films were intense, Jones tells TVLine, wait until you see the legendary director’s obsession with then-showbiz neophyte Hedren unfold on screen.

The actor, whose career includes The Hunger GamesMy Week With Marilyn and W.,  notes that Hitchcock first noticed the blonde beauty in a commercial and soon wanted no one but her to play The Birds’ lead Melanie – a part Hitchcock referred to as “the girl.”

“He knew every single aspect of filmmaking, and I think he thought, ‘Well, I’ll just make her into a good enough actress,” Jones says. “‘She has limitations as an actress, but I’m so able and so practical that I will be able to transform her to my needs.’”

Hitchcock’s sense of power, and how the actress reacted to it during production of The Birds and Marnie, makes up the bulk of the HBO flick – which premieres Oct. 20. • Why is Toby Jones always the second guy to get the biopic? Or his is always the second one you hear about. First with Infamous/Capote and now this and the Anthony Hopkins Hitchcock film.

    • These are my first thoughts exactly. He picks subjects that have been dormant for decades and signs up just as they become the hot ticket item

  • Toby Jones is a very good actor. That said, he looks nothing like Hitch. Hopkins looks waaaaaaay more like Hitchcock and will probably be a not better.

  • Is this first movie anyone has made about Hitchcock and Tippi? It’s a super interesting subject, I’m excited to watch this. It ought to be good.

  • Sadly they won’t be nominated for Emmys because of the stupid rule of combining lead and supporting TV movie performers into one category.

  • I worked with both of them on this film. They are true class. Sienna’s talent is so effortless and Toby is such a focussed man. Julian, the director, really knows what he’s doing. Can’t wait!!

  • Hitchcock followers will get an unexpected eyeful when they see this movie and it isn’t particularly nice. Very good performances from all cast members.
