The Idol (Less) Rich: For Jessica Sanchez, No Guaranteed Album Deal, Likely Smaller Payday

For what appears to be the first time in American Idol history, the first runner-up is not being awarded a guaranteed album deal that comes with a $175,000 advance.

The reworking of the prize package terms for Season 11 was discovered by the Associated Press upon review of show contracts from eight of the past 11 seasons.

Season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez is not guaranteed an album deal (with 19 Recordings Inc.) that pays a $175,000 advance, as Season 10 counterpart Lauren Alaina was, says the AP’s findings. Instead, the 16-year-old is subject to a “development” deal that could net her as little as $30,000 to $60,000, depending on how many singles 19 Recordings commissions.

Idol pacts also require winners and finalists to perform on tour and lend their likenesses to a Disney World attraction. On the plus side, Sanchez stands to reap $50,000 per public appearance. And if 19 does order an album, the $175K payout kicks in.

Experts quoted in the AP report say the restructuring makes sense, given the current marketplace where nearly 1.3 billion singles were bought in 2011 (versus 331 million albums). There’s also the matter of the Fox series’ lower ratings, which translates into a shrinking pool of prospective purchasers, and the fact that, as one expert notes, megahit albums from the likes of Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson are “flukes.”

Season 11 Idol champ Phillip Phillips, however, will collect the same $300,000 advance given to predecessor Scotty McCreery upon delivery of his first album, the AP notes.

Idol faithful, do you think the new runner-up prize package makes sense? Is it fair?

    Why am I not surprised?!

    • Leo says:

I can think of million ‘racist’ comments but I’d go with this:
“Not only she was trapped with cheap drama with the whole “Safe”, Jessica Sanchez got robbed in the end with this deal.”

      • Lee says:

Not only did Jessica get robbed in the end with this deal, but she also got robbed with the lousy song picks by Jimmy, the judges and the producer. Granted, she could’ve picked a better song than the Aerosmith song, but then so could have Phillip, who IMO picked a lousy song for himself in Top 3 and 2. The bottom line is that Jimmy gave Phillip a song more suited to his style and ability like We Have The Night and Home. What did Jessica get? I’ll Be There (which is a complete joke) and I No Changes.

        • NR says:

I actually like the studio version of change nothing go listen to it and give it a second try. I loved it and downloaded it already the lyrics are heartfelt and it speaks to jessica’s fanbase teenagers like myself

          • bjp says:

i’m not a teenager and i totally like the studio version too (albeit the lyrics are crappy)

        • SallyinChicago says:

Lee — you are really bitter aren’t you? She chose the songs, Not Jimmy. He didn’t have veto power! She chose the clothes not Jimmy.

          • tate says:

jimmy knw jesica anches was the winner they turned it in other way,,,,,and under dog Jessica with that phillip phillpis that cant go on high pitch song at all..booooo Phillips and big booohooo for that jimmy,,full of games

        • The Maiel1233 says:

        • melissa says:

Hahahaha she had a say in everything, she just sucked.

      • noa says:

i’m pretty sure this is the deal they all signed when they entered the competition. it’s just that Jessica was the one who ended up 2nd. i can’t see how racism has anything to do with it.

      • chistosa says:

How is it racist? This contract was drawn long before they knew who the runner up would be. And she is making an album. So she is losing nothing. Talk about drama.

      • deedee says:

The restructuring happened BEFORE Jessica appeared on the scene. This was purely a pragmatic decision implemented before the season even began … not some “anti-Jessica Sanchez” campaign. Good lord.

        • darcy's evil twin says:

No, it’s racist. I’m just sure of it.

          • noa says:

it’s also a government conspiracy! this goes all the way to the top!

          • smidnite says:

It’s RUPERT MURDOCH and the rest of the conservative Fox crew who have decreed that only WGWGs will win!

          • The Mariell1233 says:

I am just as sure that it is not racist. Jessica did herself a disservice by constantly referring to herself as Filipina, when actuallys he is an Amerian of filipino heritage. After all, this AMERICAN IDOL.. She shoulld have been advised to that she is American of mixed heritage.Especially when the country is in fierce debate over immigration laws. In th final analsis, we are all immigrants.

          • Cady says:

yeah, I highly agree to that

          • Shine says:

            I agree that it’s racist

      • tate says:

agree,,she deerves to be the winner…a.i was f….

    • SallyinChicago says:

Well, none of the Idols have been burning up the charts. To produce and market a CD costs a lot of money….I read somewhere that one Rhihanna single costs upwards of $2Mil just to get played on the radio. Which I find amazingly amazing. These are unproven talents. What I don’t understand is how can Simon & LA guarantee a $5Mil record contract….has anyone heard from Melanie amaro?

      • Yo' says:

I’m not sure whether this is good or bad for her. With a per song deal, it gives a runner up a period of time to develop and find a unique sound, before fully committing to an album. What seems to often happen is they put out an album too soon, don’t do well enough and then lose their contract entirely,

      • Mary B says:

I read her first album will be coming out when xfactor starts in the fall. I also heard that LA Reed has her on a diet and fitness program. They want her to lose like 30lbs but she has only lost 5 or 6 lbs do far.

    • Suggestor says:

Jessica is now being represented by CAA which is like winning the lottery of entertainment agents. They rep Oprah, Speilberg, Brad Pitt, Clooney and some of AI’s top talent like Scotty. A veritable who’s who of the entertainment industry. It gives Jessica leverage in many dealings and way more doors open for her because they rep her. She’ll be fine on the personal appearances being top notch, they can get her on any show and some big events even meetings for film parts. I would not be surprised if she does a few singles for AI but waits until she is old enough and can sing over 18 material. This way she won’t have the restrictions and her voice will be even better. She’ll also have a huge experienced machine to help her negotiate her deals and even how Ai handles her from now on. Rest assured, all she has to do now is just focus on listening for the type of songs she really wanted to do on the show. She can also be free to express herself without being edited by the show. Just watch her interview with Ryan Seacrest on youtube. That’s the real, vibrant, smart Jess without the idol editing scissors trying to give her their ‘reality’ tv persona. So glad the show is over and she can move on to bigger better things. Even if she chooses less popular songs, at least she will be singing the songs she feels strongly about. Looking forward to the future! :)

      • The Maiel1233 says:

Thanks for the info., i was really begining to worry about Jessica’s future. I now feel reassured.

    • Jeanne says:

This doesn’t mention the deal with Tommy Mottola tha will be producing her CD so I wouldn’t go by that!

  2. Khorrie says:

“as little as $30,000 to $60,000” and making $50,000 per appearance? My life should be so unfair.

That said, she signed the contract and if she isn’t happy (not that you’re in any way implying she is, mind) then she should have thought of that way back when she signed it. No point in worrying about what she’s getting in comparison to previous years at this stage.

    • Owen says:

Please, she, like a lot of runners up, will end up making WAY more money than the crowned winner.

      • quinn says:

I agree, Owen. I was actually hoping she would NOT win, because she’s so young to have to meet such high expectations. I thought of Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson, who have done so well … and I decided that it would be much better to NOT win, and to do well, than to win, and feel the pressure to have to meet the high standards in place.

      • tate says:

u are perfectly right..Jessica is the winner we all knew that,,theres a reaf off there when they declared phillipphllips

    • tarc says:

If she can pick good material (something that she has had trouble with), Jessica could do really well after Idol.

    • SnsetblazeI says:

I know. That contract is still nothing to complain about. What would she be making if she weren’t on the show?

    • SallyinChicago says:

People also forget — the Idols are paid for personal appearances while doing the show, photo shoots, and the Ford Commercials. Plus the company pays their food, clothing and housing. Not a bad deal.

  3. YowzaPowza says:

She’s one of most deserving contestants ever on this show of a contract. Someone should surely sign her. This girl’s voice is unmatchable, considering she’s only sixteen. However, I feel like she’s a little past her time. If this were ten or fifteen years ago she’d be a guaranteed star. Nowadays everyone needs a gimmick, and she doesn’t have one.

    • Lee says:

I don’t think Adele has a gimmick except good vocals.

      • smidnite says:

Jessica ain’t Adele. Not even close.

      • RodMod says:

        Adele’s gimmick is her style.

The big, Dusty Springfield-esque hair. The darkly colored clothing. (Mostly long skirts or dresses.)

The big lashes and red lipstick…

…The straight-foward, simple singing style. (An occasional riff or run every here and there.)

It’s not “modern”, although it may be a modern take on a classic look.

        • tarc says:

Adele doesn’t have a gimmick – she’s the voice of her generation, and one of the best song writers of the decade.

          • RodMod says:

I agree that Adele is one of the best songwriters of the decade and definitely at least one of the voices of her generation.

I stand by my assessment that her “Neo-Soul/Since It’s Underground and Not Mainstream It’s Unique (Although there are thousands of other artists performing in the similar genre)/Rebelling From Commercialism Equates To Artistry/I’ll Keep The Pounds And Wear The “Mature” Hair Style” schtick is very much a gimmick. I believe it is an unintentional gimmick, but it’s what she’s known for.

Like I said before, having a gimmick is not necessarily a bad thing.

“Just look at Little Richard, The Motown Sound, Michael Jackson (The Jackson Five are the KINGS of gimmicks.), and Donna Summer’s Sexy-Goddess Image.”

All of those mentioned up above used gimmicks, yet are viewed as LEGENDS.

I love the HAIR and the fact that music listeners can see past Adele’s weight. Because with or without it, she’s one HOT lady!

      • quinn says:

That’s a valid point. There is just that “magic something” about her voice (such as the emotion she infuses into her songs) that has made so many just love her. I wonder if Jessica has tried writing any songs ~ I don’t know, although she was my favorite this season, but these days it’s almost mandatory that successful artists write or co-write their songs.

        • Suggestor says:

Jessica just did an interview with Tom Sullivan that is on youtube, she talks about having written songs and wanting to do more of that. At sixteen with her voice, work ethic and the lessons the AI experience gave her she will have a great shot to develop herself musically. It is ironic that although Joshua and her were not the winners, they ended up doing the post Idol press tour due to P2 being so sick. It was probably for the best because Jessica and Joshua seemed really tired at the tail end there so P2 would have been in really rough shape. Btw, I got to hear her sing live on the Today show yesterday, and hearing her live makes a HUGE difference! It dawned on me what everyone was saying about her size and the power of her voice. On tv, it would depend on your sound system but live, her voice truly resonates.:)

    • JC says:

Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift (not a great singer but she sings live without gimmicks) & Pink. These singers doesn’t use any kind of gimmick to sell and they do sell :)

      • RodMod says:

        Gimmicks are not always bad.

Just look at Little Richard, The Motown Sound, Michael Jackson (The Jackson Five are the KINGS of gimmicks.), and Donna Summer’s Sexy-Goddess Image.

Gimmicks are not always bad. Wanting attention isn’t always bad.

Oh, Mr. I wish you were still here to enlighten us.

      • Beckstle says:

Pink? Are you really saying that PINK didn’t have a gimmick when she came on the scene? She called herself Pink and dyed her hair! LOL! She was also pitched as the anti-Brittney. Incidently, I love Pink, and have her CD’s, but when she started she absolutely used a gimmick to make herself stand out.

        • Suggestor says:

Gimmicks can backfire, the ones who make them work choose it organically and it fits them. It no longer feels contrived. Adele’s look and the way she is marketed fits her singing so well that her gimmick exudes her individuality. When other people create a look for you without your full control then you become a gimmick without substance. Jessica has all kinds of natural qualities that she can fully flesh out, the military kid (ishe already had that look prior to AI sporting the cap and camous), the multicultural singer with a sassy, soulful vibe, and add to that the eye for fashion. She is no Adele, but who is? No one is really Jessica either if you factor in everything that she has going for her.

  4. Jacob says:

I read she’s got the weight of Tommy Mottola on her side, so I suspect it’s a matter of when her album drops and not if.

  5. If this was in the contract at the start of the season then all the contestants new what they were signing up for. If this decision was made during the season then it seams a little unfair, what’s to say that Jessica won’t out sell Phillip. Why can’t another record company sign her up and give her a new contract? This would depend on the contract with 19 and how long that would last. It might be worth a new record company buying the contract from 19 and signing Jessica anyway. I only hope that the decision on this deal was stated before the season started. As I don’t know all the exact facts on this and the complexity of the contracts, I am only guessing that Jessica could be bought by another record company! Anyway, I’d be happy with $50,000 everytime I showed my face at an event, but 2 or 3 events per day would be better!

    • Khorrie says:

19 is very, very loathe to give up their AI contestants. Unless things have changed (and I doubt they have) they’ve got the top ten – and possibly more – locked up for years.

    • Belle says:

If she outsells Phillip she will make more than him because she will get a % of sales. That $30,000 – $60,000 is only if she doesn’t get an album deal. Otherwise it’s business as usual.

      • Jeanne says:

She received an album deal the night before the finale…you didn’t know? Tommy Mottola was seen in talks with Jimmy the night before and as soon as her obligations are over with Idol and the stupid tour Tommy will be producing her album.

        • Marsaili says:

No, she did not—nothing is set in stone yet—-why do you persist on this and keep bringing up Tommy Mottola. He was THERE, she hasn’t signed anything yet! Oh, and that “stupid tour” will make her tons of money and get her tons more exposure. Wow, you are just a broken record, aren’t you?

        • bj says:

AMEN TO THAT ! Reading all these negitive comments about Jess ! I can’t wait for her to soar !!! She is my american idol !

    • SallyinChicago says:

“Why can’t another record company sign her up and give her a new contract?”
To answer your question Steven, 19R doesn’t have to sign her, they can sell her contact to someone else. Let’s say that Clive Davis, for ex, wants to sign her. He would buyout her contract.

      • Jeanne says:

She was already signed the night before the finale which they don’t want out obviously. Hence she did not need the win. Tommy Mottola who launched Mariah will be producing her first CD it’s all over the internet and Tommy’s wife blurted it out on twitter the night before the finale. So she is all set! I wouldn’t read too much into this article.

        • Marsaili says:

NOT TRUE. the article has more truth that this mantra you’ve been repeating since the finale. NOTHING has been signed yet, NOTHING is set in stone yet. You keep bringing up Tommy Mottola and Mariah Carey, yet you fail to mention how he drove her literally crazy and she had a break down. I wouldn’t wish that on Jessica.

          • Suggestor says:

Mariah hated the way Mottola pushed the ballads on her as well. Coincidentally the song they pushed on Jessica to sing was the final straw for Mariah and was her way of letting that part of her life go. I would hope Jessica gets produced by Willi am, Akon or Jessie J’s people. That’s more her early vibe.

  6. Donna says:

I think she should be hired by Glee. Same network, she’s actually the right age (unlike the rest of the cast) and they need an influx of (diva) talent with all the graduations. Is she free to take on other (non AI projects for the next year, or is she contracted to them only)?

    • Khorrie says:

She’s contracted to 19 Entertainment, which will more or less own her soul until whatever contract she signed runs out. And even then, they rarely lose AI talent; for example, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are still with them, although Kelly left them for a spell before going back.

      • Dana Kiehl says:

Kelly Clarkson isn’t with 19 Management if that’s what you mean. She’s managed by Reba MacIntire’s husband. She’s only with RCA/19E for her record deal.

        • Khorrie says:

Considering her record deal is the biggest part of her career, I’d say 19 still has a rather important say in Kelly’s life.

      • Jeanne says:

This is a false statement. Tommy Mottola made a deal with them already for her. His name was mentioned on Idol from Jimmy that Tommy called him about Jessica. And he was seen talking to Jimmy the night before the finale then that same night Tommy’s wife blurted on twitter that he would be producing Jessica’s first CD so she is all set regardless of any contract.

        • Marsaili says:

OMG would you STOP already? He was talking to Jimmy. WOW—he was freakin’ sitting next to him, of course he’s gonna be talking to him! And it doesn’t matter what his wife tweeted, until it’s announced by AI, it’s all HEARSAY.

  7. chessguy99 says:

No wonder they pushed the “artist” Phillip to the win and bussed Jessica at the end. Now they can milk her for singles, without giving her much upfront. She’ll have to pump out ten good selling singles, before she’ll make what Phillip will get for what will probably be a flop album.

    • tarc says:

Cosidering the guys has had a #1 single since the finale, and as many as 10 singles in the iTunes Top 200 simultaneously, I doubt a ‘flop;’ will be happening in Philiip Phillips future for a very long time.

      • Emily says:

I’ll believe it when I see it. Phillips is not, by any means, the first singing show contestant to chart well on iTunes during the competition.

        • tarc says:

It’s not during the competition, but after. And David Cook was the last to come anywhere close to this, and Phillip’s downloads, so far, are significantly better. Time will reveal, of course.

          • Emily says:

I’m referring to iTunes singles of songs performed on their respective singing shows (as opposed to singles released unrelated to said competitions).

          • teatime says:

Are you saying Phillip is going to break Cook’s BillBoard record? Or that he is selling about a million singles this week? It will be quite impressive if his downloads are close to Cook’s. His downloads might be the best since Cook’s.

          • Hey tarc…do your homework. Last years winner was given a platinum CD on this season’s Idol by Jimmy for 1 million CD sales. So much for “David Cook was the last one to come close to this”.
Time will reveal, of course, if you do your homework before posting again.

          • teatime says:

Thomas, tarc was referring to the iTunes downloads this week. We have no idea what might happen yet with the debut album. I doubt Phillip’s downloads this week are close to Cook’s but they might be the most since Cook.

    • Jeanne says:

Again not true…She was signed the night before the finale by Tommy Mottola who launched Mariah. His wife blurted it out on twitter the night before finale. She is all set he is producing her first CD it will not be singles. This article is bogus and and truthful.

  8. Reblogged this on TLPS-BOOTLE and commented:
Jessica Sanchez may not get a record deal!

  9. Bobbi says:

I’m not sure why the runner-up of any season should have a guaranteed album contract. Isn’t that the point of winning?

    • Khorrie says:

Simple answer: Money. 19 requires that every contestant sign with them so they can milk them for everything they’re worth (and more).

      • Bobbi says:

I know they have the right to sign them, but to guarantee the runner-up an album? That’s different. Takes the right of decision out of 19’s hands. If the runner-up is guaranteed an album, then they have to make one for them.

So before this season and the contracts discussed above, what was the difference in winning and coming in second besides the title and publicity?

        • Khorrie says:

Nowadays? That’s about it. Which is why the show is faltering.

          • Owen says:

the show is faltering because of predictably same o’ same ol’ winners. The cost of the WGWG is the failing of American Idol the brand. Its obvious why Phillip Phillips’ win was the least watch coronation in Idol history.

          • tarc says:

We have no real idea if the show is faltering because we have no reliable ratings. One factor overall is a dcline of total viewers of network TV, but as for Idol specificaly? There is no indication it’s because of any specific reason. The winners are as popular as ever, so I’d posit brand fatigue and alternate music performance show competition.

          • JC says:

AI is losing its variety they used to produce pop/rock/country/rnb artists but lately I feel like they are leaning towards contemporary artists no offense to Phillip’s fans I think that he will do great given the right songs but a WGWG winning AI for 5 straight years will certainly help Idol towards the route of cancellation. If this trend continues I’ll give Idol about 2 more years before signing off :)

    • hooiskellie says:

      i agree.

      • Mary B says:

Can someone please explain to me how Scotty and Phillip are the same type of singer? The only thing they have in common is that they are both white males. Scotty did not even play the guitar on Season 10 except maybe once he held it but really did rock out with it like Phillip does. So how are they the same. Are you saying a girl HAS to win or the show will be cancelled. I am so sick of all the WGWG garbage and that’s exactly what it is garbage. Name one female who has done better than the winner since Jordan Sparks. Crystal petered out just like Lee did. Adam did better than Kris and yes I agree that Adam should have won that year but it had nothing to do with the WGWG syndrome. Adam did not win because he came out that he was gay and unfortunately there are parts of the country that frown on that. Scotty did a whole lot better than Lauren on the charts so how did the wrong person win there. It is people that are screaming and spreading these stories about the outcry of the WGWG that are causing the problems with the show.
Jessica has a beautiful voice and I do believe she will be successful in her own right but Phillip deserved to win. I tried an experiment yesterday. We visited my 40 year old son and his wife who does not watch idol. She works nights and they have two small children and have not time for the show. My son is too busy getting them, fed, bathed and into bed at that time after working a full day.
I brought my ipod full of season 11’s music and I played it for them on their ipod speaker dock. They loved Phillip’s music and listened to it over and over and asked a bunch of questions about him. They said Jessica has a beautiful voice but she is too generic and it is not the type of music they enjoy listening to. BTW, my daughter in law in Filipino. They knew nothing of the situation and the whole WGWG thing. All they did was listen to the music and picked Phillip as their favorite. Phillip is topping the itunes charts for a reason. Enough is enough, give him credit where credit is due.

        • quinn says:

@ hooiskellie ~ I agree with your assertion that Philip and Scotty have little in common, but I have thought that “cute guys” are often the winners, because of the (my guess) huge number of young girls watching and voting. The guitar notwithstanding, I think the “cute guy syndrome” is the key.
Even going back to season 8, Kris was the “cute” guy; Adam was “dangerous” and daring. But, I wish you and others would stop saying that Adam “came out” during or after Idol — He was an openly-gay man in his career in Southern California and elsewhere, years before he became a household name. He didn’t “announce” his gayness on Idol, and I think he was smart not to do so, for whatever reason. (I’ve heard various takes on this: The powers at Idol asked him not to … He was advised not to until the show was over … He decided not to, hoping that people would judge him on his music … and so on.) Divulging that early on, as you mentioned, would have scared off the less-progressive viewers, so I believe that Adam’s gut -or the advice he got from others- was savvy. (And, I know that many knew what was up by looking online, etc. … but long after season 8, I kept seeing people posting, “What? He’s gay??” So, not everybody pounces on the internet to find out “the truth.”)

Your experiment was interesting, but it is, after all, one anecdotal example. Finally, I’m thinking that, rather than the WGWG syndrome, what might be a more accurate model is “cute white guys who write their own music.” These days, writing or co-writing one’s own music is extremely important for young artists. (Just a guess — That’s all any of us are doing: guessing. It’s annoying to me when those of us NOT in the industry claim to “know” everything that’s going on.)

          • ejones says:

They do have something in common – they won the competition before the live shows even started, no matter how well or badly they performed live they were ahead in the voting.

Personally, I think WGWG is a cop out phrase. What’s going on is complicated and multi-factoral.

    • SnsetblazeI says:

I agree with you Bobby. Why should the contestants care where they come In if they get a deal even if they don’t win? We have seen contestants stop trying to win because they thought or knew they’d be getting a deal. That said, not every top 10 participant gets a major deal. Some go to indie or smaller labels. Others to Broadway or they self-release their own stuff.

    • SallyinChicago says:

Bobbi makes good points. Only the winner should get the goodies.

  10. Dana Kiehl says:

I’m not sure, but I believe in Season 1, only the winner was guaranteed to be signed. I don’t think that started changing until Season 2.

    • Snsetblaze says:

Andvseason 5 was the first where most of at least the top 10 got deals although not necessarily from 19.

  13. Stacey says:

I don’t think Carrie and Kelly’s CDs can be declared flukes. They are still selling. Actually isn’t Kelly’s one doing it’s best business since Breakaway. Carrie still sells extremly well. Sure down from the big days. But that is the record business. Adele is a fluke. No one sells like that. Time will tell. Something tells me Jessica won’t sell as well. Unless they do find a sound that makes known to the public. Although her sound is probably better than Phillip in the long-run. Time will tell. No one knows.

    • Amy says:

William Hung was a fluke from American Idol. People like Clarkson and Daughtry sell music internationally. Some experts just be hatin’.

    • MA says:

I think the writer means that they’re exceptions because most AI contestants never reach that level of fame. In the AI world, hitting it as big as Kelly or Carrie is a fluke.

    • SallyinChicago says:

I have a wakeup call for all of you. As the Itunes for Idols is released, the producers are watching the sales. Is it a fluke that all the WGWG (Lee, David, Philip Philips) have been the #1 sellers on Itunes in their season? Crystal came in 2nd and 3rd. Jessica came in behind Joshua and Philips. That’s not lost on the producers. Ever since Itunes, it seems that Itunes is used to determine who gets the record contract, who wins Idol, etc. etc. Not twitter.

      • Stacey says:

Well it’s to be expected to be selling well right as the show ends. Only David showed he was able to sell in the long-run. But then his second failed to generate interest, and there is rumors he about to be dropped or has been dropped. Scotty has sold; but he was in country and there hasn’t been a real country male from the show. So he had a market to tap into. Kris has very weak sales of his first, and his second is going to have very weak numbers. Lee did nothing. Phillip is new. Time will tell. As he gets further from the show; we will see how he sells. Also his surgery means he will be out of the limelight in the crucial early months. But the tour will help. But his music will help to sell. And it didn’t for Lee, and Kris. And I am pestimistic about the future. But who knows, no one can know how they will sell in the future. It’s very unpredictable!

        • Realist says:

It’s not a rumor, David Cook was dropped by RCA.

        • tarc says:

Why is it to be expected right as the show ends? It’s not expected at all. Of the most excellent Top 12 this year, only Joshua is picking up any single sales post-show other than Phillip. I don’t really believe that people are flocking to iTunes to buy songs from 20 weeks ago just because Phillip won, but rather because people got turned on to his music. To the contrary, Lambert was slaughtering Allen, and Daughtry was making much more noise then the winner.

          • Realistic says:

The producers gambled on Lambert and Daughtry because they saw that they were selling right after the finale.

If those two did not sell right after the finale, no producers would gamble on them to produce an album.

          • Mary B says:

Haley also sold very well last year on itunes and Interscope did pick her up

        • deedee says:

Well, taking historical data into account (which is really only since – what 2008?), it is to be expected that sales are good after the season ends. Cook was cleaning up for a couple of weeks after the finale, as were Archuleta, Castro, Brooke etc. Kris and Adam were also selling like mad after their season was over, as were Scotty, Lauren and Haley. This year does not follow tradition, as only Phillip is represented in any significant way on itunes. Jessica should be close behind, but is nowhere to be seen. So this year is definitely different than any other year.
Maybe the other idols really didn’t have much of an audience all season. I don’t know if that will affect their chances of getting a full album deal with Interscope, but I’m guessing it will. Why would Jimmy take a chance on someone who can’t sell even while their exposure is at full throttle? Jessica has massive international appeal, so she may be worth the investment, but the rest? Not so much. Unless they go the “singles-only” route, which isn’t such a horrible thing. Wonde when these things will be announced.

    • Brooke says:

“I don’t think Carrie and Kelly’s CDs can be declared flukes. They are still selling.” I think maybe you misunderstand what calling them “flukes” meant in this article? Most AI winners do not have the long-lasting, smashing success that Carrie and Kelly have had. Therefore, Carrie and Kelly are flukes in terms of what winning AI can do for an artist. I’m not sure how Adele factors into it?

  14. sam says:

This is somewhat premature isn’t it? The second runner up has never been guaranteed a record contract, but usually they do. What about the winner — wasn’t it supposed to be a million dollar contract?

    • Jeanne says:

What most people do not understand about these singing competitions with a money prize is. For instance you win a million dollar contract does not mean you get 1 million dollars up front you will get a portion of that money for 5 years. In order to make a CD you have to pay for the studio time etc with the money that is given to you. You don’t get the money and recording time on top of that. So more or less…here’s your money now give it back. The artist gets very little from record sales. most of the money made comes from merchandise and touring. Doing concerts is where your bread and butter is in the business.

      • teatime says:

Idol does not even give a “million dollar” contract any more. They have not in more than 5 years. Does that mean they also do not invest nearly as much money in promo for the debut album as they did in the first few years? Maybe that is one reason why the biggest-selling debut albums are from the first 5 years.

  15. Sheena says:

Jessica is such a fantastic artist. I’m sure she has a lot of fans waiting for her debut album especially in asia. We can’t wait for it so I’m hoping someone would sign her up right away and give her an album that she deserves and p.s. the itunes is not a representation of how well Jessica could sell she has a ton of fans in asia and the itunes chart only represent the USA

  16. Christina says:

Judging by how their performances have been selling on itunes since the finale Jessica might not get to make an album. Phillips performances have been all over the top 200 but Jessica’s are nowhere in sight. She’s probably going to get one single to make an impression and if it doesn’t catch on adios!

    • JC says:

Jessica’s fans are mostly outside of America but her american fans are still buying her album its currently in the top 9 in case you missed her coronation song was widely panned by critics so that may explain her lack of charting on the singles department :)

    • Davey says:

Actually Jessica’s album is now higher on the Itunes chart. Her fans bought a lot of of her singles before the finale. As far as her coronation single goes, blame Jimmy for that–he already admitted it in an interview. If Jessica is smart she’ll get away from him as soon as possible since he obviously doesn’t know how to pick songs for her (I’ll be there).

      • Realistic says:

ZERO of Jessica’s songs is in Top 100 even from the very beginning. This is the first time ever for a runner-up not to be in Top 10, now even in Top 100.

Even her good songs are not selling, not just the coronation song.

Philip has 13 songs at one point. Even the bad songs that AI chose for him are selling.

There are millions of sales gap in between them for both songs and albums.

Her fans need to buy to show support.

Otherwise, the producers would be scared to produce an album for her if they do not see that she is selling.

I want both Philip and Jessica to succeed so I bought all their songs and albums to support.

        • NR says:

Just wait and see how well she would sell in Asia. Charice for example a flilipino singer like Jessica has sold mediocre in america just 140,000 I believe meanwhile she has sold like 300,000 in Japan alone she also went double platinum in the Philippines but Jessica is more famous and buzzed about than Charice so her sales might be higher

          • Realistic says:

The producers’ and the artists’ targets are always US because that is where the most profit comes in.

There is no doubt that Jessica would sell in the Philippines because most of her fans are there.

However, if Jessica or any artist even those from overseas has a choice, their choice would be the US because of the huge market and the huge profit.

If they don’t make it in the US, then the artists try to go overseas.

        • Jeanne says:

Who wants to buy cover songs? I don’t!

          • Realistic says:

If you don’t buy her cover songs now while she is still popular, who is the producer that would feel confident to gamble in producing an album for her?

            That is business.

        • HappyListener50 says:

I’m not sure what is going on with iTunes. Many of Jessica’s fans have been unable to buy her songs off iTunes. Clicking to buy Jessica’s album just brings me to the review section and each of her songs, “the item you tried to buy is no longer available”.

  17. Tommyo2000 says:

Here’s where being 16 and Latin/asian will help… In reality 175k is not a lot for a record company… I doubt they would want to cut her loose very quickly… Do you think 19 wants to see here with another label at say 21 years old selling albums all over Asia and Latin America … That clause was to protect them in case a real clunker like lee or Taylor comes in second… I suspect there are a lot of executives and producers at umg that would want to work with her to make their own reputations…

  18. kristine c. says:

Jessica will do just fine. God Bless Jessie! ^^

  19. MAB says:

she is young and need to be develop. when she turns 18 that would be great

  20. Brendan says:

Just one more sign that this show is on the way down. It was fun while it lasted but every good (or formerly good) thing must come to an end.

  21. teatime says:

This just doesn’t seem right when you consider how many millions of dollars they are paying the judges or that the X Factor is paying their winner $5 million. Universal gave record deals to quite a few contestants from last year, so this is just stating the minimum guarantee. Still, it seems for the sake of the show there should be some higher payout guarantees.

    • TheBeach says:

It is not a guaranteed $5 million immediately to the winner of X Factor. Listen carefully to the way they phase it. The winner has a “chance” to make that amount over 5 years IF… and there are a lot of if, and and buts attached.

      • teatime says:

Thanks for the update. I had heard Simon insist that the winner was getting a straight $5 million prize. I am not surprised if that was not exactly true.

      • Jeanne says:

From inside sources 5 million is not given up front. The winner gets a portion spread out over 5 years and with that portion they have to pay for their own recording. It’s not a recording deal and money on top of it. So more or less Here is your money now give it back. So because they have to pay for their own time it might take a while for the CD to come out.

  22. The Worm says:

This is good news. Tommy Mottola can snatch her from the filthy honcho’s of 19. I’ve been going around Jessica’s YT videos and apparently a lot people can’t buy her songs because they are unsearchable/not there. This is sickening. Evil really does exist.

    • Realistic says:

itunes can be bought anywhere, including the Philippines where she has huge fans.

Unfortunately, most of her fans are downloading them illegally because they don’t want to pay.

      • Sheena says:

Yeah it can be downloaded anywhere but the chart that is being shown are sales from the US only so there goes your theory

        • Realistic says:

What matters for all producers is US sales because that’s the sales that they will used as a basis if they will produce an album for her.

      • obb says:

Apparently, all AI songs are only available in the US. Much said, relatives from London, NZ and Aussie couldn’t buy Jessica’s songs, this is much feedback I got from them. So since they could not, I am buying for them, sending them Itune gift cards :) I don’t think Itune charts would be too strong a basis to know an album would sell or not. Only time can tell.

      • JensRandz says:

Tell me how to do it. As far as I know my German and Philippine ITunes account could not buy AI songs both albums and singles. iTunes does not allow me to buy them. :(

  23. msyeldzon says:

i like Jessica’s voice, and i wanted to download all her AI songs on iTunes, unfortunately, they’re not available in my country, and maybe not even in most parts of the world, but America.

    • JensRandz says:

Likewise, I’m dying to buy her songs from iTunes but I couldn’t buy them buy them. Got both account registered in Germany and Philippines. I’m really pissed not able to buy her songs.

  24. Davey says:

Jessica already has an agent to deal with television offers, it’s been reported. 19 Management is going to have to deal with her agent now, too. I don’t know why this story was reported, maybe to discredit Jessica–but I still think she has a bright future.

She was fine on the PBS special which got a bit screwed up because of the rainout so her dress rehearsal performance weren’t shown until later in the evening.

  25. Jared says:

If I were Jessica..I would fulfill my obligations to American Idol..go on tour..etc..then get the hell away from them and go sign a development deal with an urban label..and let her make the album the way she wants too..the girls a star..theres no denying that.

  26. Steve says:

What i want to know is how many more albums/singles that Philip & Jessica need to sell before they get more than their advances and then what % do they get. Thats something I always wonder with music acts..If a single sells for 1.29/99 – how much does the artist (if they didn’t write the song) get? What about on a 12.99 album? If someone like Scotty sold over 1 million albums, has he gotten more than $300,000. I guess thinking he’d get as little as $1 per album so he has earned a mill is probably not necessarily true. $30,000 for Jess for up to four to six singles? That doesnt sound like much at all. Music is a hard biz these days for sure – esp since young people who probably consume most of todays pop music – can get pretty much any song for free these days with not much effort. Thats what makes XF $5 mill contract that much more bizarre -TVLINE is there a lot of fine print in that? Has Melanie gotten half a mil already (for half a year) without recording anything but Respect. Do the Idols get any money from the iTunes songs that are released during the season? So if I downloaded Philips week 10 song…does he get any money or is that all going to 19 or Jimmy or Simon or Freemantle or Fox? think viewers would like to know since many think they’re supporting the artist and they’re not. Both this years Idol and last seasons XF had a LOT of great talent…Im interested in seeing how many – if any – can make a success out of it…Seems the Kellys, Carries are slim to none…But Idol has Phillip, Jessica, Skylar, Josh who all have big potential and others like Elise could have niche potential if they act REAL QUICK (which they’re probably contractually prohibited from doing)…In addition to Melanie (who better release something pronto – maybe we’ll get to see her slimmed down look on the Teen Choice Awards); they had Astro, Drew, Rachel, Chris, Josh – even Marcus got singed although I believe he released a single that went no where. Its a rough world these days and without a great song, i don’t care how great your voice is…Carrie and Kelly wouldn’t be great stars without great songs. Kelly actually has had her biggest hit to date now with Stronger (What Doesnt Kill You)

    • Jeanne says:

The artist gets barely nothing from record sales. The money goes to the writers etc. Most of their bread and butter is through merchandising and concert tours, That is where most of their money is made. This article is false and bogus and failed to say that Jessica got signed to Tommy Mottola who launched Mariah.

      • deedee says:

The article is not false and bogus. It is explaining that the runner up is no longer automatically given an album deal, and that 19 has more options now. This article is not about Jessica, it’s about the terms of the runner-up contract that Jessica is bound to. I don’t think there has been a formal announcement about her deal yet.

  27. Jamie C. says:

To put it simply, I just don’t care about this.
    Gimme some Idology, please.

  28. Suggestir says:

CAA who reps Oprah, Speilberg, Brad Pitt and the majority of the top talents in entertainment is now repping Jessica. HUGE game changer for her in terms of negotiation and access to top exposure. She’s going to be fine and will just need to focus on song selection. Her future is bright.

  29. Realistic says:

The contestants, or the parents if minor, signed this deal DURING the EARLY DAYS of the contest.

Lauren, the runner-up last year, got the same deal.

Sadly, Jessica is not selling in itunes. Lauren sold lots of songs and album.

Jessica’s fans need to buy her itunes songs and album so that the producers will gamble in producing her an album.

If they do not see that she is selling now while she is still popular, how will they give her an album?

    That is business.

    • Suggestor says:

Jessica’s Idol Journey broke the top ten in albums. She’s selling and the charts do not tell us the accumulated total sales right? As far as I know, she was selling all through the season and I wouldn’t be surprised if her sales were a lot if we saw the stats of the whole season. Many fans bought the after each episode. Also, once the tunes are available worldwide or on CD they will sell to the LARGER fan base outside of the US.

      • Realistic says:

itunes is available in other countries including the Philippines wherein the majority of her fans live.

Unfortunately, even on the previous shows, Jessica was not selling that much that would be enough for producers to feel confident in producing an album for her.

Her fans need to support her in sales, not youtube. A lot of them are downloading them illegally.

        That is not sales.

The artists and the producers want to sell in the US. Foreign sales are just icing because the profits are not that much.

        • Mary B says:

She was not selling then either. I read an article where Colton was first with piano man and Phillip was second with moving out. Nobody else were even close.

  30. MoonerMan100 says:

Is there any final episode of Idology?

  31. EveatEden says:

    1) the terms were set at the start of the season, so it was the contestants choice.
    2) I didn’t realize the runners up were getting guaranteed contracts anyways lol. Did they have to accept them? I always thought the best part about coming in 2nd was that you got to choose which label you went with and didn’t have to take the 19 entertainment offer (if you got one). That’s why a lot of runner’s up have done better than the winners, because they were able to pick a record label that let them do the kind of music they were good at rather than pigeon holing them into the type of record that idol producers wanted.

    • deedee says:

No, just the opposite. It has always been 19’s right of first refusal, so if 19 wanted to sign any contestant, that contestant had no choice. The non-winners can only search for a different label AFTER 19 has rejected them.

  32. Julieta Hernandez says:

Phillip Phillips has a talent and that is to make a song his own and he sings ok. The real talent was Jessica Sanchez. She will do better than Phillips, just as Lambert did . They

    • Realistic says:

Lambert sold millions in itunes right after the finale that’s why the producers gambled on him in producing an album.

Unfortunately, Jessica is not selling in itunes because her fans is not supporting her in sales, only in youtube.

How will any producer would feel confident to gamble on her when they see that she is not selling now while she is still popular?

Clicking to buy Jessica’s album just takes me to the review comment section, where I read complaints from other Jessica fans who are also unable to buy her songs. Trying to buy each of her songs, “the item you tried to buy is no longer available”. I find it strange that I easily bought and successfully downloaded Colton Dixon, John Legend and Beyonce songs. The problem, it seems, is only with Jessica’s songs.

  33. Desiree says:

I heard today on Today’s Show from Matt Lauer himself, Mottola is going to produce Jessica Sanchez’s album. HOW’S THAT

iTunes is not actually a basis whether an artist is marketable… don’t just focus on 1 area as your basis…

Thank you. I just preorered a copy from Walmart to be realeased on 7/03/2012 and mailed directly to me on that date. Total cost for CD under $10.00. (includes shipping, handling and tax in states where tax is charged.
