What to Watch: Memorial Day Weekend Marathons, Specials and More!

If the weather doesn’t hold up for you, Memorial Day weekend won’t be spent grilling on the beach. But here’s the good news: There are plenty of TV marathons and specials to be found — plus, you’re being patriotic, in a way, by being an all-American couch potato. In addition to our What to Watch column (posting Sunday, and going weekly for the summer), here are some programs to keep on your radar.

3 pm – 11 pm Law & Order: SVU (USA Network) | If there’s one thing you can always count on, it’s for SVU to be marathoning somewhere.
5 pm – 3 am Saturday | America’s Most Wanted (Lifetime) | Don’t get this mixed up with the slew of procedurals on this weekend.
10 pm Under African Skies (A&E) | For the 25th anniversary of Paul Simon’s Graceland, this documentary chronicles the controversy of the album and his 2011 concert in Africa.
10 pm Mystery Diners (Food Network) | This new show might make you second-guess that dinner reservation.
10 pm Insane or Inspired? (Syfy) | Series premiere: A weekly countdown of the craziest and most exciting viral videos.

9 am – 5 am Sunday | Creature Features (Syfy) | Leading up to tonight’s premiere of Supershark at 9 pm, you’ll meet Dinoshark, Mega Shark, Crocosaurus, Dinocroc, Supergator and Sharktopus, in their respective TV-movies. That’s a lot of cross-breeding.
10 am – 10 pm The Mary Tyler Moore Show (Hallmark) | Have you heard what she can do with her smile?
10 am – 9 pm America’s Next Top Model (Oxygen) | Lots and lots of Tyra mail!
12 pm – 4 am Sunday | Tainted Love Weekend Marathon (Lifetime) | The 12-hour marathon includes Murder in Greenwich — starring SVU‘s Christopher Meloni and Lost‘s Maggie Grace — and many more “based-on-a-true-story” movies.
6 pm – 3 am Sunday | Psych (ION) | Get Psych‘d, you Psych-os!
8 pm How to Be a Gentleman (CBS) | Burn-off time!
9 pm The Firm (NBC) | In this double episode, Mitch represents a prostitute with a dangerous secret, and Abby’s trip home leads to a unprofessional relationship with her doctor (Ghost Whisperer‘s David Conrad).

  1. jasie says:

Also on Sunday 5/27 is the finale of HARRY’S LAW.

    • smidnite says:

That’s what I’ll be watching, as I’ve already survived more than my fair share of rerun marathons.

  2. Elizabeth says:

it is Laura Prepon not Lauren.

  3. WyldeMan52 says:

You completely left off the Kevin Costner ‘Hatfields & McCoys’ mini-series airing Monday-Wednesday on the History channel.

    • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

As denoted in Alyse’s intro, regularly scheduled programming such as HATFIELDS will be included in the regular What to Watch column posting Sunday.

  4. Kimberly says:

Psych is always on Ion on saturday nights for about 6 episodes. Did they add extra hours or something?

    • John Berggren says:

I count 9 in the description here, but even if they didn’t, the staff here probably just scan for what look like marathons on the schedule and post them.

      • Kimberly says:

Thanks, I was not really counting. Even so there is no problem having more psych! IMHO you can NEVER have too much Psych! Wish USA network would cut back on the NCIS and show some marathons of thier original programming.

        • suzi says:

I agree. I love NCIS, but mixing up the repeats with other shows’–Psych, Royal pains, In Plain Sight–works just fine for me.

  5. smidnite says:

You know, marathons and daily blocks of favorite shows are cool when someone is new to an established series; but after awhile….

  6. Craig says:

Also, isn’t Mad Men new on Sunday? I think that’s worth mentioning.

  7. cjeffery7 says:

maybe, MAYBE the only one of these worth watching is OTH but bleghk guess i’ll just be marathoning my own collection of DVDs and movies.

  8. Lorie says:

Thanks to the on-demand channel, I’m doing 2 marathons this weekend: The Glades & Suits. Gotta get ready for the new seasons.

  9. There is nothing better than a entire day with Benson and Stabler, and a whole weekend with Gibbs, and Dinozzo

    • icywinter2 says:

The marathon they are showing isn’t with Benson or Stabler it’s the original Law and order not SVU>

  10. chylerleighononceuponatime says:

Thanks. I love Ion’s Psych marathons.

  11. JC says:

I can’t wait Jessica is doing the national anthem and will be singing the prayer :D

  12. You missed the ION Criminal Minds season 6 marathon on Memorial Day. I think it runs from 1 pm to 3 am.

  13. I Lohr says:

Hallmark also has a Bob Newhart marathon on Sunday. Love Bob and Emily

  14. I’m majorly excited for the episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ on Sunday. The long-awaited epic sea-battle of Blackwater is finally here! Cannot wait.

  15. TheBeach says:

So this means no more daily What to Watch replaced by a weekly one? Aw, that sucks for those of us with short term memory loss. Many times I would have missed something if not for your daily reminder column. Please bring it back.
