Breaking: NBC Renews Parenthood For Season 4

Parenthood RenewedThe Bravermans are officially off the bubble: NBC has renewed Parenthood for a 15-episode fourth season.

Although the family drama was listed as a “safe bet” on TVLine’s 2012 Renewal Scorecard, the recent cone of silence from NBC about the show’s future — combined with the leak of an unofficial (and likely fake) schedule that had P’hood MIA — triggered a wave of cancellation anxiety across the Twitterverse over the past 48 hours.

Parenthood is the second veteran Peacock drama (joining Law & Order: SVU) to get renewed by NBC ahead of next week’s official schedule announcement. NBC also has picked up second seasons of the freshman dramas Grimm and Smash.

TVLine’s 2012 Renewal Scorecard has been updated with the news.

    • I literally just shrieked, “YESSSSSSSSSSS!” when I read this headline. OMG, I love Parenthood, it’s the only drama I watch regularly. Thank you NBC for not being a factory of disappointment, now do the right thing and renew Parks & Rec and Community.

      • And just to make it even better, now the 5th season seems like a done deal, as well…they’ll have 68 episodes with Season 4, 20 away from syndication and they rarely give up so close to the obligatory 88 episodes.

I can’t understand how series get canceled that are so good!!!! What do we do to prevent this from happening? Maybe I have to ask family to make sure they record every episode on their DVR so it gets better ratings!

  • 15 episodes? Is this a shortened final season or doe NBC just think they’re USA or TNT?

Comment by Meg – May 10, 2012 01:42 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Whenever has Parenthood been given orthodox renewals? 13, 22, 18… 15 doesn’t strike me as necessarily a final season, and they haven’t said it is either. I don’t think its intended to imply a decision has been made one way or the other. Also, given rumours of shortened seasons for their existing comedy block, perhaps we are seeing NBC indicate fewer 22 episode shows this year?

Comment by ben – May 10, 2012 01:51 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Season 3 was actually renewed for 16 episodes but NBC increased the order to 18. But you’re right. I don’t take it as a sign of imminent cancellation and I’m not convinced NBC won’t add more episodes to the order once the season premiers.

Comment by Ryan – May 10, 2012 01:57 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • Yeah, I was being over simplistic, because I didn’t want to write a wall of text, but I agree that 15 isn’t necessarily the final number, too.

Comment by ben – May 10, 2012 02:02 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • I was just going to say the same thing, depending on how many viewers and also how well or poorly the new shows do they may add more episodes this upcoming season again.

Comment by sarah – May 10, 2012 02:06 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • With all the various pickups of new shows I think they are gonna have a very unconventional schedule with shorter seasons.

Comment by mandy – May 10, 2012 01:58 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • And let’s face it, this is NBC, they need to be testing things out to try to find shows that work so they can stop being a joke (all my favorite shows are on NBC though so I guess they aren’t a joke to me.)

Comment by Pash – May 10, 2012 02:56 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Hopefully they will add on 3-6 more episodes during production next season.

Comment by GeoDiva – May 10, 2012 01:53 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • For me its subbing Fringe for CT. It’s not been the ideal renewal season, but it’s been close. I’m sad that we are most unlikely to see an Awake renewal – ratings don’t justify it, even if the show itself does :(

Comment by ben – May 10, 2012 01:59 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Also, I want Harry’s Law renewed. But if it isn’t when NBC unveil their final schedule, is there any chance John Scott could get some episodes on Fringe this year? No?

Comment by ben – May 10, 2012 02:03 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Agree – only thing is TBS programming does not air directly in Canada so I hope one of our stations opts to pick CT up, otherwise I may not be able to see it!

Comment by freddy – May 10, 2012 02:31 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • The fourth season means it’s been on for three years. That seems like enough for veteran status.

Comment by Carly – May 10, 2012 04:33 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • So happy to hear the good news. 15 episodes for Season Four is fine by me. At least if Parenthood may have the same number of seasons Friday Night Lights had which is five and one word of advice: don’t bring back Minka Kelly back for the upcoming season.
