The TVLine-Up: TV Worth Watching This Monday

On TV this Monday: J.J. Abrams uncorks a new island mystery, the Broke Girls get a neighbor, birthday girl Betty White wants to punk you, a Lost Girl finds herself on Syfy and more. As a supplement to TVLine’s original features (including several stories on Gossip Girl‘s winter premiere), we’ve singled out 10 shows to keep on your radar.

Gossip Girl Boss on Chuck’s ‘Struggle,’ Serena’s ‘Anxiety,’ Blair’s ‘Denial’ Over Dan and More!

8 pm Alcatraz (Fox) | Two-hour series premiere: A detective (Sarah Jones, Sons of Anarchy) and Alcatraz historian (Jorge Garcia, Lost) team up with a secret agency dedicated to finding inmates from the infamous prison who went missing 50 years ago and are reappearing today. Sam Neill (Jurassic Park) and Parminder Nagra (ER) also star, and J.J. Abrams (Lost) is an exec producer. (Read our First Impression.)

8 pm Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family) | With Lucas missing and questions surrounding what happened out on the lake, Hanna’s reluctance to help only causes more problems; Spencer’s new lead about “A” guides her to an unexpected place and revelation.

8 pm How I Met Your Mother (CBS) | In the hitcom’s 150th episode, Lily and Marshall officially move to the suburbs only to realize that Lily’s bossy father refuses to move out of their house. (Check out photos here.)

8:30 pm 2 Broke Girls (CBS) | Max and Caroline are suspicious of a new upstairs neighbor (Jennifer Coolidge, Best in Show). (Read more about Coolidge’s recurring character.)

CBS Monday Sitcoms Scoops: HIMYM, Two and Half Men, 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly

9 pm Being Human (Syfy) | Season 2 premiere: Nora starts her transition into a werewolf; Aidan fearfully prepares for his meeting with the Elders; Sally goes haywire with her new powers. (Oh, and this guy will be returning.)

9 pm Two and a Half Men (CBS) | Zoey tries to coerce Walden into cutting his hair and shaving (and apparently it works; Ashton Kutcher debuted a jarringly clean-cut appearance at the TCA winter press tour last week). Meanwhile, Alan and Lyndsey rekindle their relationship.

9:30 pm Betty White’s Off Their Rockers (NBC) | Series premiere: After celebrating her 90th birthday with an 8 o’clock NBC special, America’s sweetheart debuts this new hidden-camera show, sending a fearless band of senior citizens to the streets to pull pranks on the younger generation.

Hot for Winter: Your January Premieres, Returns and Finales Calendar

10 pm Lost Girl (Syfy) | In the U.S. premiere of this Canadian series, Anna Silk (The Ghost Whisperer) stars as Bo, a Succubus who feeds on human energy — sometimes with fatal results. Refusing to embrace her supernatural clan system and its rigid hierarchy, she searches for the truth about her own origins. Ksenia Solo (Life Unexpected) and Kris Holden-Ried (The Tudors) also star.

10 pm Hawaii Five-0 (CBS) | McGarrett is rocked to his core when Chin Ho reveals shocking news about Joe White; Danny plays midwife for his ex-wife when she goes into early labor.

10 pm Castle (ABC) | Mayor Weldon (guest star Derek Webster, Damages) — the man whose political clout keeps Castle at Beckett’s side — lands in the crosshairs when a woman is found dead in a car that traces back to his motor pool. (Read about Beckett’s conflict here.)

That sounds like The Killing, heh.

  • Watching How I Met Your Mother, DVRing (or watching, depending on if my sister comes over) The Lying Game, and DVRing Alcatraz and Castle. I hope Alcatraz is good! I’d love another LOST-like show to follow. Also hoping HIMYM has something special planned for the big 150. That last episode was a kind of weak, and I feel like there are a lot of loose threads hanging that haven’t been touched on in a while.

  • For those who haven’t seen Lost Girl yet, you’re in for a treat. While the Pilot makes it kinda seem that the show is more serious, the following eps unleash the full on humor. Especially Ksenia Solo as Kenzi is hilarious.

  • Will DVR Alcatraz. I really dislike 2 hour premiers. Way too much commercial time I’d rather just skip later.

  • Definitely excited for Alcatraz tonight, though I hope that it isn’t too similar to Lost or we’ll never heard an end to the griping.

Didn’t realize it was two hours long. Better block off some more time to power through it so we can recap it tomorrow!

  • Been dying (heh) for Being Human’s return! It’s killing me that it’s opposite another traditional viewing for me: post-Golden Globes w/the Fashion Police. What to do, what to do…I think FP will air again several times this week, so Being Human it is!
