Dancing With the Stars: Did the Right Couple Get Booted This Week?

Conventional wisdom dictated that this week’s Dancing With the Stars eviction would come down an age-old question: Is it worse to experience a dancefloor disaster or to offer up a pre-performance package void of humor, cheekiness, and general-purpose good vibes?

Alas, though, while Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus paid the price and landed in the Bottom 2 for a wonky jive set to “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were sent to safety despite an obvious dearth of chemistry that was punctuated by Maks’ verbally and physically rough treatment of Hope during rehearsals.

Here’s how the Halloween Week results played out:

Moment That Made Len and Bruno Bang the Judges’ Table With Delight
Derek Hough’s devastating Argentine Tango/Flamenco combo with So You Think You Can Dance’s sensational Allison Holker

Most Amusing Exchange
Carson (concluding a ridiculous results-night package): Back to you, Tom and… [uncomfortable pause]
Carrie Ann: Brooke.
Carson: Brooke!

David Arquette and Kym Johnson

Nooooooooooooooo! The jauntiest, campiest (and arguably the third-most-talented) couple in the competition finish in sixth place? Say it ain’t so!

“Sadness in the ballroom!” cooed Robo Brooke Burke, convincing absolutely no one that she had the ability to detect and process genuine human emotions.

“There must be a mistake, because this is my show!” joked David, offering what appeared to be a winking commentary on Maks’ “I made this show” outburst from last week. Later, getting more serious, the Scream star added, “I just love all the people I got to know and dance with. This production is top-notch. It’s been an amazing experience and I’m very grateful.”

    • I love Nancy Grace and she has a huge fan base. I called in to vote for 24 hours and always got a busy signal on her line. Lets not forget why she is dancing and all her proceeds are going to missing and exploited children. Her scores have to be rock bottom for her to get voted off. (Which judge would give her low scores when she is dancing for such a great cause? Not one) She has the most votes for any dancer on Dancing with the Stars. She is dancing strictly for charity. Nancy gets all the middle age women votes as well. There are not a lot of young people that watch this program. Or I should say that more middle age adults watch than the younger group.

        • I don’t think the first 6 couples really represents a dancing competition, especially this year. JR and Ricki are really the only competent dancers. Anyone of the bottom 10 could have gone home in any order. People vote for a variety of reasons and supporting Nancy’s gift to a charity is just as good a reason as David trying really hard or Mak’s is hot without a shirt on.

Max is a great dancer but his ego is sooooooooo big that he thinks he has to use drastic steps to teach anyone, lighten up Max! We love you but not your attitude. BEST OF LUCK and VOTES to JR and RICKI.

      • Please explain to me how Nancy is able to raise money so that per the prior post “…all her proceeds are going to missing and exploited children.” This is a dance competition not a fund raiser. It is not enjoyable to watch her dance; in fact it is rather uncomfortable. In out-takes she is rude, surly & there is no chemistry with her partner. At least David was always fun-loving, positive and giving it his all. Nancy “phones it in”.

They treat their partners in the rudest way I have ever witnesed on this program. This is an entertainment show, and neither Hope or Nancy deserve to still be on the program given the way they are performing and acting.

Also, it’s not fair that Nancy Grace is getting votes by donating to charity. That is not the point of the show…it’s not called Dancing for Charity. It’s Dancing with the Stars and Nancy is not a star. She is by far the worst dancer on the show and should have gotten voted off a long time ago.
It was not fair to David who COULD actually dance!

Ya he does have a bit of a ego but no more than Len. One judges and one dances and works his butt off for the show. So before you say to much about Mark . Look up his credits. Hope had her soccer pals voting.

Hope’s fan base is coming from the sports world so DWTS viewers don’t understand or see it, but trust me it exists. That’s why they have been so hard to knock off. Notice they finally revealed the real bottom 2 this week and Maks\Hope weren’t in it despite one of the most uncomfortable packages I’ve ever seen on the show.

  • Very sad to see anyone go at this point in the competition, but I think – for the first time in DWTS – people are voting for some of the celebs based on who they have for a dance partner! Nancy Grace isn’t that wonderful of a dancer, but her dance partner, Tristan, is a shy gentlemen who is extremely likeable. It’s his first time on the show & he’s got an obsessed following that’s the reason why she’s pulling through the competition for so long. In addition, Hope is an amazing dancer/athlete, but Maks is bringing her down by constantly acting like a violent, abusive psycho. I refuse to vote for Hope & Maks based on the fact that I’m actually scared for her safety. While I think Nancy should have gone home, I am thrilled to see Tristan shake his money maker for another week. Yay!

      • I agree. It is painful to watch her dance. I have been trying to figure out what it is about her dance that is so peculiar. Is it her shoulders that are too stiff? Her bent knees? Not every woman is feminine but Hope is really on the extreme side. Maks is really a self adoring jerk. Watching Derek dance last night I can understand why Maks has such an issue with him. Derek is so much superior.

Don’t dish Rob to harshly he’s really coming into his own. but………..I think Derek and Katarina will fight it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Derek is soooooooooo amazing that dance last night was well again amazing. That led to THE best dance she’s done all season, the group dance. and if Derek hadn’t stepped up, i don’t think she would have done as well. Maks is an asshole. if they bring him back next season after all his crap this time, i’ll be in shock.

    • It’s not the first time ever that people have voted for their favorite pros – that happens all the time and it makes a big difference in the competition. But the thing with Tristan is that he’s new, almost like a contestant himself – he’s clicked with the audience and they want to see him succeed – I think voters are more actively interested in him than in the other pros.

  • Honestly, why are people still voting for hope????? David had the unfortunate circumstance of dancing first — with less viewers — i liked nancy — but with maks being very abusive and being the most unenjoyable couple — i can’t imagine why people would still vote for the wooden dancing that hope does as opposed to the fun that david brought to the table or the grace and fun that chynna and kristin brought that hope lacks in spades.

It was clear from seeing her rehearse with two other dancers that she is very ill-matched with Maks. The producers of all these “call in” vote shows probably manipulate the votes which ever way they want. David should have stayed. Nancy and Hope and Kardashian should have been gone by now.

    • Thank you for the voice of reason!

I believe that votes are irrelevant and that who stays and who goes is decided solely based upon who brings in the ratings. My opinion is based upon all the past seasons along with this one. It seems that only at the end do the Judges actually determine the winner and that is based upon dance performance.

Think about all those who stayed so much longer than ever sensible! Remember Kate Goselin? And there are so many more examples.

  • Indeed, I am very disappointed by the voters. Obviously, they have no taste and understanding of good dancing. Nancy sould have left the show, not David. Why do voters have stronger voice than the jury? Can’t somebody weigh the two sides, giving more to the jury? It is absolutely ridiculous how some very good dancers were voted out of the show, whereas others, who can hardly move their bodies, stayed simply because of uneducated voters.

Comment by Anguel – November 1, 2011 08:26 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Let me make a point. Most of the people voting for Nancy Grace are indeed educated. In her case, dancing is becoming secondary because of her cause. Nancy knows that she is not the best dancer, but the effort is priceless. I am sure that her votes double or triple every other dancer. The rating factor in as well.

    • Hope has treated Maks like dirt since the beginning, her attitude sucks and personally I don’t blame Maks for being harsh. Plus, Maks trains all stars the same way and all the others didn’t complain because they weren’t whinners and Maks is truly trying to make them dancers and they all seem to enjoy themseleves and quite a few have even fallen for him. Hope does not like being critized by anyone and whines about the judges not being fair and yada yada, no matter what Maks tries to explain. I hope Maks doesn’t leave for good because he is a great teacher!!

    • Agree that this show’s voters turn this into a popularity contest, not dancing accomplishment. However, we are never told the exact voter numbers, as they keep it to themselves, and “factor it in to the judge’s scores”? I say, “Baloney”, the judges decide who goes and who stays ahead of time, such as coddling their ‘golden boy Derek’. The show might be entertaining, but at the same time, it is a scam, that people feed into. jmho.

      • That was so tactless and rude! She couldn’t haven’t done that dance without him!

  • Most people commenting here don’t vote. So they don’t understand what it is about. People votes based on who inspired them the most. This show is teaching non-dancers celebrityto dance, not all of them are as talented dancing as other. But voting for them means we appreciate them for who they are and what they represents. Therefore, JR, Hope and Nancy fit those description. I love Hope cause she is a female athlete that during the world cup inspired young girls. She has swagger and mental toughness. Never in my life have I seen a group of women inspired a nation so much as was the case this summer. Women athletes are barely celebrated and admired. I will vote 100 times for her as a way to thank her for giving young woman like me hope that one day being a female athlete is not a waste of time. My point is people watch with their eyes but vote with their hearts. So the best dancer or singer would not always be the one winning. It is the dancer that people care for personally that would go thru.

  • Militant power dyke Hope should have been sent home. I don’t blame Max for getting angry with her, she’s such a miserable person. Sweetie, this isn’t the soccer field, this is dancing, so stop clomping around the floor like a linebacker. Can’t stand her, wish she would’ve went home.

      • Kristen, perhaps if you are so easily offended you shouldn’t be posting or reading comments. Honey, if you thought that was offensive, it’s a good thing I held back and didn’t say what I really thought of horrid Hope and Max. You’d probably be gasping and clutching your pearls.

    • So her “clomping” around justifies the abuse? Maks is the professional dancer and is supposed to be teaching. He has behaved this way so many times before and there is no justification.

      • Anyone think they paired Maks with Hope because of her height? I’m guessing Maks is well over 6 ft tall, Derek might bow in at 5’8″ or 5’9″. I’m guessing Hope is close to the 6 foot mark. Anyone think they might pair Maks with the ladies who are over 5’10″ and Derek with the shorter girls/

  • Well, I guess I don’t need to watch DWTS anymore. David was my favorite and he and Kym were WAY more entertaining than Hope & Maks or Nancy & Tristan.

On a different note, can they please replace Brooke with Carson? I love him! Hope he comes back as a co-host next season!

  • Unfortunately, it’s starting to look like my “don’t watch a single episode as long as Nancy Grace is on the show” vow may lead to my missing the whole season.

  • Wow, this season just can’t stop shocking me. I can’t even imagine who it’s going to be in the finals at this point. Does this put Rob or Nancy in the 3rd position with Rikki and JR? I never would have seen that coming at the beginning of the season. I really thought Hope was a goner tonight after her distaste for dancing with Maks became so obvious Monday night. All this season I thought she just didn’t like dancing, but it turns out she doesn’t like dancing with Maks. And I kind of don’t blame her, he can be a big scary bully. Maybe she could have been really good if she had been put with a different partner. How did this happen tonight? How did David get voted out over Rob, Hope, and Nancy?

  • Love Maks but DWTS just don’t give him partners to properly show his skills.I believe they favor Derek because he always get good partners. However Maks and Derek were always my favorite pro dancers.Well due to this season i must add Val to my favorite list.
Maks may be a bit rough but i believe it is staged for ratings and honestly i support Hope but she just have to use her figure more and try harded to keep improving. I Maks and Hope to make it to the final.Goodluck Maks just have some more patience and everthing will work out.Love you Maks,Derek and Val.

  • Watching the judges banging their hands on the desk for their “golden boy” Derek, almost urged me to hurl! Derek is a great dancer, but constantly showcases himself and/or to take the focus off his current partner, who usually stands there while Derek is flitting around her like a butterfly! It should be called the “Derek Show”, with the judges falling all over their ‘golden boy’. Hough constantly works at commanding attention to himself. Can’t stand him. Give me Maks, any day!

  • I missed the intro to the piece so I was wondering who that woman was dancing with Derek in that Tango piece because it didn’t look like anyone from the current cast. So imagine my surprise when they said it was Allison…! When did she become such a ballroom goddess?

  • Really disappointed in this season. Some dancers went home way too early. Why is Nancy Grace still on the show? I cannot stand watching her. Not a big fan of David’s, but he was way better than her. I am really surprised at Rob. He is a lot better than I thought he would be.

Comment by lynn – November 2, 2011 10:44 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Based on the overall scores so far, I never expected David to make the final three. It’s going to be Ricki, J.R. and either Rob/Hope. David was an okay dancer but he’s not good enough to be called one of the best… and Nancy is a much better choice for those that love an underdog.

When the show started I wanted Nancy gone first but I’ve seen a totally different side to her and I appreciate her journey on the show. She works just as hard as everyone else and knowing that she is dancing for a good cause makes me like her even more. I know some people think say that donating the money to charity should not matter, but whenever the public votes… everything matters.

And it’s not her fault that David went home. He got less votes, so he went home. It has nothing to do with Nancy… it was the viewers that did it and it’s their choice to make. That’s the way this show works.

  • DWTS this season has been like watching Dr Phil with spandex and sparkles.

I mean, Maks has both anger issues and a deeply ingrained competitiveness to his character, along with an increasingly obvious inability to teach someone who is not a natural dancer or at least who has little if any musicality in them. I would bet you donuts to dollars that Hope was hopeless on triangle in her kindergarten band and musically speaking, went downhill from there. On top of this lack of musicality, Hope is a team player. She thrives in a larger environment, when she gets encouragement and feedback from more than one, incredibly inarticulate teacher, i.e. the group dance, the lessons in sexy movement from the women Maks brought in. The producers so screwed up pairing these two, and I feel sorry for them both.

Moving on to Nancy Graceless and her wonderful partner…

Wouldn’t you love to have seen what might have happened if Tristan had been partnered with Hope? Hello, Rikki & JR – my name is Hope and I’m going to fight it out with you in the top three!

But then, imagine Maks & Nancy together? Reality & live TV’s first attempted murder. And the odds are 50-50 on who would be the victim and who would be the perp.

And finally, the tempering of Karina Smirnov – fiery, emotional dancer with a sparkplug temper who’s finally been partnered with someone who a) wants to learn b) loves to dance and c) – and absolutely most importantly has proven to be her most important teacher. Because Karina has finally learned that not everything is about her, and not everything is about the competition. I think this is the season she deserves to be partnered with the winner.

  • Most of the dancers left do not seem like they are having a good time. Especially Hope and Nancy. Even Ricki does not seem to be having too much fun. For me, the last three contestants that were voted off were the most fun to watch because they seems like they were having fun. Thankfully JR seems to be enjoying himself, otherwise I may have skipped the rest of the season.

  • No, Nancy Grace was the one to go. David put a great deal of fun and improved dancing in the show. His magician number was great.
Her jive was nil. If they would allow us to vote online again with their ABC network, it would bring in many more people. Many of us are not texters but love the show. Len can go anytime…The male judges comments have been negative and hurtful.

  • Let’s be honest , people. There is nobody on this show that can dance!!! The flat-footed stomping around by this years *stars* (and I use the word loosely) is horrendous. Who are these *stars* anyway??? I tune in to watch the pros!!!I think Max was right.. in that DWTS really belongs to the pros!!! The show definitely does not belong to the self-absorbed judges. These three have gotten more obnoxious over the past few years. Time to pull the plug on the whole thing!!!!

  • Nancy cheats cause she asks her audience to call her DWTS number during her Monday evening show. Sure not fair to the other dancers.

  • Nancy Grace cheats. HLN Broadcasts the number to vote for her for hours and the hosts on the show frequently ask people to vote for her. Not all the contestants have access to a show to beg for votes. I feel this goes against the spirit of the competion. She all ways appears to fight for what is right and yet she doesn’t play fair. She should be disqualified!!!

  • I’d like to see Karina win. Her partner can dance. They have chemistry. I like Derek and his partner, but JR’s the better dancer.

    • This is supposed to be about talent and dancing not who has the best fan base or name recognition. JR has the most talent followed by Rikki. Nancy has the least talent followed by Rob. Even Carlson had more talent than Nancy. Len lets her get by with sloppy footwork and lack of flair. Len is the one responsible for keeping Nancy in the race. He doesn’t like Hope or Max because Max is a better dancer than Len ever hoped to be. It is time for Len to get out of the business.

  • EithervNancy or Rob should have gone homes. When china lost her steps she was gone after only one time. Nancy totally lost it on the end of her Dance. She is in dinial. Thinking it was good. Uh, they got 3 x 7 right? And Rob week 8 and he’s still walking thru the steps instead of gliding or dancing them. Only reason he has made it this far is of all the Fat Ass family members voting over and over! Neither Rob or Nancy have lost the weight like Ricki or Kiersti Alley!

    • As far as charity,I believe they are all donating to their favorite charity…and that should not have anything to do with the contest.

Seems to be just a popularity contest, not a dance contest. I never cared for Nancy Grace, but I will admit she has been doing ok..that said, she should have gone home this week-not David Arquette who has steadily improved, worked hard and was very consistant.I’m glad we “got to get to know him”. Mak and Hope? I don’t see it, she still hasn’t got into performing at this late date, still awkward and tempermental. Mak!! blew it last week in the way he threw Hope around. It was atrocious to watch! He’s abusive and arrogant!! I don’t believe he deserves to come back again after that..Rob is a nice guy but he is still so stiff.
J.R. and Ricki bring it every week and I am having difficulty choosing one over the other. They are both wonderful dancers and great people! J.R. is so incredible on every aspect, his skills, his personality, his courage, his sweetness and talent. His beauty comes shining through.
