Exclusive: Hawaii Five-0 Reunites Two Heroes

Losties aren’t the only fans being treated to a reunion by Hawaii Five-0, where Terry O’Quinn will share scenes with Daniel Dae Kim this coming season. No, the Heroes faithful will similarly see Masi Oka meet up with a familiar face, when Greg Grunberg guest-stars on the CBS action-drama, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Grunberg will play a ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agent based out of Honolulu, and whose team’s primary functions are the survey of items smuggled into the region and all Homeland Security threats.

“He has worked with Five-0 team member Lori Weston (played Lauren German) on Homeland Security issues before, so he is aware of the task force and their successful and unorthodox ways of handling cases,” executive producer Peter M. Lenkov tells us of Grunberg’s character. “His first exposure to working directly with Five-0 is when the team handles the murder investigation of an ICE Agent under command.”

Where there’s a murder, there’s a dead body. And where there’s a dead body, there’s often a coroner. Cue Oka, who is now a Five-0 series regular as Max.

“Of course, we plan to infuse the character with Greg’s unique personality and humor,” says Lenkov, “as well as put him in a scene with Masi for those die-hard Heroes fans.”

  • Ugh! Not a fan of this show or Greg Grunberg at all. Time for CBS to put this show out of its misery. Stat!!!!

    • Seriously? It’s one of like 2 watchable shows that CBS airs… I’d take this over another cookie-cutter franchise spin-off any day of the week. And I for one am always glad to see Grunberg pop up as a guest star.

    • They can’t do that yet. They need to get at least some of their money back through syndication first. The most expensive pilot in 10 years turned out to be just a mediocre rating show for CBS. Not at all what CBS was expecting after the huge expenses. They expected bigger than NCSI and they got a Close to home type of result. They need to get some of that money back.

      • I don’t know where exactly you got your ‘facts’ from, but H50 is getting some of the best ratings on CBS network. Maybe get your facts straight next time before you try to come in here and mouth off on one of the greatest shows CBS has to offer these days.

        • Actually, Hope is not entirely wrong. 5-0 has great ratings overall (22nd most popular show), but by CBS standards, it’s strictly middle-of-the-pack – behind both NCIS’s, Criminal Minds, CSI, The Mentalist, The Good Wife, even Blue Bloods. • Some of the best ratings on CBS? Even Blue Bloods and CSI Miami on weekends get more viewers than Hawaii. And right now with Criminal Minds SB and Defenders gone and The Good Wife moved to Sundays ,Hawaii is the weakest show from Monday to Thursdays.

          • Actually, you’re forgetting CSI:NY, and I have a hunch 5-0 will land higher than some of the new shows.

        • That said, I agree that it’s one of the best shows on the network, and I wish the ratings were even better.

          • no sure about the new shows. A friend of mine watched Person of Interest and Unforgettable, and he said they were both amazing. The best CBS has made in the last 4 or 5 years.Seems CBS will have a great new season.

    • Damn, I’ve missed Matt and Hiro! They were the best part of Heroes IMO and I’m grateful Hawaii 5-0 can be that good at stunt casting! It has the best guest starts ever

    • OK, Sam, we’ll get right on it, since you alone know what’s best for the rest of humanity. Go back to watching Gossip Girl reruns.

  • They already had a Heroes ‘reunion’ on H5O when James Kyson Lee (Ando) guest-starred last season.

    • Thank you for pointing it out, Linda.
Was good to see “Ando” again!

    • Yeah, but James Kyson Lee and Masi Oka never met each other on H50, which I was really disappointed about.

    • Yes! As a fan that stuck it out with Heroes right through the unsatisfying end, I love Greg Grunberg and Masi Oka! I don’t watch Hawaii Five-0, but I want to watch this episode!

  • Greg Grunberg is a very good actor and a great drummer too (Band from TV) I like the way he carries characters with tension, edginess and a sense of humor. look forward to seeing him and Masi together.

  • Plus, Greg was also on Lost.

Comment by Chris G. – August 23, 2011 01:09 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • That’s a bit of a stretch, though. Yes, technically he was on Lost. However, he was uncredited in the Pilot episode, had his scenes deleted in another episode, and finally was only heard in the ‘LA X’ episode. Hardly reunion material in the traditional sense.

  • Can CBS and Five-O read Greg’s minds?

  • Ratings are fine and it ended 22nd for the season. Not that terrible and expect show to last for a while.

  • Relying on stunt casting already?

Most shows don’t do this until well into a 4 or maybe 5th season.

    Just ask Supernatural:P

  • I’m actually kind of excited to see these guys, this is an amazing show! One of the few watchable shows on tv today! And one of the many few reboots to actually WORK!!!!

  • Greg was actually on Lost as well (he was the Oceanic Pilot who got killed by the Smoke Monster in the first season – (also had voice cameos in season 5/6 as the pilot)

  • This *guest star of the week* business will turn Hawaii Five-0 into Love Boat/Fantasy Island type show. Those *guest stars* should be on Dancing with the (so-called) Stars, not H50! Usually this gimmick isn’t pulled until season 5 or 6 of a failing show (e.g. Justin Bieber on CSI).

All these guests + the new semi-regulars will detract from the best part of H50 last year, which were the inter-relationships and back stories of the 4 main team members. I am going to view Season 2 with great trepidation.

  • Love this show – Hawaii five O – Really different to the normal cop shows, has humour and a serious side. Love all the actors hope this show goes on for a long time. Scenery is breathtaking as well.
Blue bloods ok but can be boring at times.

  • Just saw the ep. Nice little easter-egg dialogue when Masi insists that he’s seen Greg someplace before.
