Dick Wolf Hopes for Criminal Intent Reprieve, Says D'Onofrio & Erbe Have Never Been Better

Dick Wolf must be feeling a bit of deja vu this spring. Just as a year ago he was lobbying for NBC to pick up the original Law & Order for a 21st season (allowing it to set a record as TV’s longest-running drama series), the L&Overlord is now hoping that Criminal Intent‘s imminent 10th season won’t be — as announced by USA Network — its last.

“Being the unbridled optimist that I am, I still have hope that this is a ‘victory lap’ and not a ‘swan song,’” Wolf said during a Thursday conference call. “Based on the work so far, I think the audience is going to be very happy, relieved, and welcoming… and hopefully enough fans will come out so the powers-that-be reconsider their decision.”

Jay Mohr to Channel Charlie Sheen on Law & Order: Criminal Intent

Weighing in Criminal Intent‘s favor, of course, is the much anticipated return of two original series leads, Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe (as Detectives Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames) — not that Wolf ever wanted them long gone in the first place.

“It was never a decision to have them disappear into the wilderness,” Wolf says of the duo’s single-season extraction, during which Jeff Goldblum rode solo as Detective Zach Nichols. Looking forward, Wolf says, “I don’t think Vincent and Katie have been any better ever in the series. [Criminal Intent] is back to the power of the first two seasons.”

Criminal Intent Lines Up Guest Stars for Final Season

Of course, there is the none-too-small matter of getting Goren back onto the Major Cases Squad, fired as he was for insubordination at the start of Season 9. That segue is orchestrated by a new captain, Joseph Hannah (played by Jay O. Sanders), whom Goren knows from the police academy.

There’s also a bit of head-shrinking involved in Goren’s comeback. As Wolf explains, “In getting him back in the good graces of the police department, part of the agreement was for him to go back into psychological counseling.” As such, there will be one scene per episode where Goren meets with a therapist played by Julia Ormond (CSI: NY).

Those scenes, Wolf says, “will answer some questions that have been hanging since the first season, and over the course of [Season 10's] eight episodes you’re going to see something about the redemptive power of psychotherapy. This is an attempt to move [Goren] back to the psychologically complete detective that he was in the first season of the show.”

Whether this run of episodes kicking off Sunday, May 1, at 8/7c, is a “swan song” or “victory lap,” Wolf says, “This has been a great experience…. There is a real power in seeing this show come back at full-octane, with stories that are really interesting.”

Will you be tuning in for Criminal Intent‘s return?

It’s not fair to the people who love “Bobby” and look forward to seeing him for you to take him off again. My Facebook friends and I have decided to boycott watching anything that is made by Dick Wolf until Law and Order C.I. is back on schedule with Vincent and Kathryn.

  • I am so looking forward to seeing Goren and Eames back. This definitely helps deal with the disappointment of the loss of the L&O mothership. Maybe they can find away to integrate some of the cast from L&O. Here’s to a long and successful return for Criminal Intent.

  • CI has always been my favorite of the L&Os, so I’m thrilled that they’ll be returning with the major players. It would have been awful if the series ended with last season the way it did; I never bought in to Jeff Goldblum’s character. I’d love to see a visit by Chris Noth and Julianne Nicholson, maybe even some of the L&O folks.

  • As much as i detest the procedural franchises on broadcast tv. Criminal intent was actually the good law an order. Where both cop and criminal have weight. I would hope if Dick wolf want a future in television he would stop using the mindset of using conventional. Its time for the era of unconventional Procedural like Boomtown for example. I want watch episodic tv that not bland or very predictable.
If Law and Order: LA had added a whole lot mythology I would of stayed pass the first episode.

Comment by teniba – April 22, 2011 11:43 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • L&O:CI started out looking at the case from the criminal’s point of view and then showing how the detectives figured out what we already knew. The original L&O starts out with the crime and investigation, then proceeds to the court and conviction. When the shows first started they stuck pretty close to those formats. but over the years, the law and order parts have sorta merged.

Comment by majamababe – April 22, 2011 01:58 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • ^what the other person said, but I think CI used to mostly deal with white collar crimes, like that episode about the silverware thief (which is less ridiculous than it sounds – it was priceless antique silver).

  • I know this isn’t the popular line for most fans of the L&O franchise, but what interests me most is the writing. The SVU cast is intact yet there have been some dreadful episodes this season. When the writing is sharp, both for the mystery and the detectives, the L&O shows can withstand cast changes. Some of the budget savers on SVU, the eps with Stabler but little Benson or vice versa, succeeded because of the scripts. And, frankly, I found CI hit and miss during the last few Goren-Eames/Logan-partner-of-the-month seasons.

Comment by Marc – April 22, 2011 12:40 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Pretty sure that Benson cut back was because she was busy being preggers, not because of any budget problems.

    • The writers of Law and Order SUV and the original Law and Order came from CA post the writers strike and I believe stayed. That is why some of the episodes just plain stink Marc. There is a huge difference in NYC vs say Los Angeles. I think they just are not getting it.

I love all the L&O’s. I miss the original and hope that CI does come back somewhere.

Yes Olivia had a baby in real life that is why they had such a sorry partner for Elliot. I am not sure why they can’t keep an ADA though?

  • It would be great if this was back for several more seasons. It was my understanding, though, that the reason they began to have Eames and Goren switch off with other detectives (first Chris Noth and then Jeff Goldblum) in the first place was that Vincent D’Onofrio couldn’t take the stress of network TV’s 22-episode season. Maybe they keep it at eight or ten episodes a season he’ll be able to keep doing it.

And they all are watchable. Actors are great. And even all the supporting actors shine. How could they manage to make LOLA so boring? Even supporting and extras here look like they graduated from Misha Barton film school.

Now LOCI is my favorite show period. Dick Woilf has some made skills for producing, and I would put in same class w Stephen J. Cannell, who produced the best TV drama ever, Rockford Files. • Goren & Eames are the only L&O characters that are compelling to me. I hope the writing is also as good as season 1 & 2. As the show went on, Goren’s confrontational conversations with the criminals diminished. I’m very happy we’ll see Goren in therapy. Now that HBO’s “In Treatment” was cancelled I’m in dire need of seeing therapy, if not needing to be in it. I’m NOT a fan of Jay O. Sanders, but I trust the writers to make his character interesting, so I’ll try to start with a clean slate. I hope the franchise continues for a long time.

  • A detective show for our times and the best program of its sort on TV. Yes, it lost its way last year. But reports suggest it is coming back stronger, bolder, unapologetic, with nothing to lose and with Dick
Wolf’s full attention. It could be a miracle like “Godfather II” if they pull it off…maybe the best is yet to come. Maybe this could be a new benchmark for TV drama success in this post-network TV era…
