Politics and friendships do not mix on Riverdale this week — resulting in a serious rift between two of the show’s dynamic duos.
Hermione, fresh off announcing her run for mayor, is out there selling Hiram’s Southside prison plan — and winning the endorsement of Bravo’s own Andy Cohen! — but Fred isn’t a fan, and now wants to sever all business ties with the Lodges. Jughead is fuming about his former school being converted into a jailhouse, and goes on a hunger strike to protest. And Ethel, whose family lost everything thanks to the Lodges, dumps a milkshake on Veronica’s head for her family’s “crimes against Riverdale.” (But they still have Andy Cohen’s vote, right?)
Jughead steps up his protest game after Hiram announces that Southside High will be demolished by week’s end, chaining himself to the school along with his fellow Serpents. Archie tries to talk him out of it, which puts the two lifelong friends on opposite sides, with Jughead chiding Archie for taking Hiram’s side over his own dad’s. (Ooh, burn.) Meanwhile, Veronica is fed up with all the gossip circulating about her family and decides to run against Reggie for student body president. She recruits Betty to be her running mate, but a nasty flyer circulated by Ethel — with inside dirt supplied by Josie! — labels her a liar, and when Betty finds out Veronica knew about the prison plan and didn’t tell her, she quits the campaign. Uh-oh… Riverdale‘s two strongest friendships are in serious trouble, folks.
True believer Archie is still dishing out pro-Lodge propaganda when his mom Mary returns home to help Fred get out of his contract with the Lodges. She can’t believe Archie is standing up for “a crook” like Hiram, and scolds him for disrespecting his father. Hiram is ready to move Jughead and the Serpents out by force — and wants Archie and his wrestling pals to do the dirty work for him. Archie hesitates, but Hiram reminds him of his blood oath: “If you break it, there will be consequences.” So Archie reluctantly agrees… but only if Hiram will let Fred out of his contract with Lodge Industries.
When Archie and his wrestling squad show up at Southside High with bolt cutters, F.P. is ready to knock him out, but Jughead is confident that with everyone taking video of this moment, his message is getting out there anyway: “We’re not going to go away.” After Archie snaps his chains, Jughead moves onto the next phase of his plan: running for student body president, with Betty as his co-president. And he’s not the only one: Fred announces he’s throwing his hat back into the mayoral race. Attention, Lodges: Your day of reckoning is approaching.
CHERYL IN PERIL | With her mom Penelope plotting her demise along with Uncle Claudius, Cheryl doesn’t feel safe in her own home. (To be fair, who would feel safe in that creaky old haunted house of hers?) So she invites the gals over for an old-fashioned slumber party: “Fancy dressing gowns are appreciated. You’ve all seen The Beguiled, right?” Really, she just wanted an excuse to invite Toni over, and we almost witness our first Choni kiss when — there’s a loud crash. The wheelchair-bound Nana Rose “mysteriously” tumbled down the stairs… and Cheryl’s starting to worry she’ll be next.
The doctors tell Cheryl they found a toxic herb in Nana Rose’s bloodstream, but Penelope chalks that up to the old lady chewing on plants in the greenhouse. Cheryl is still freaked out, and when she directly accuses Penelope of poisoning Nana Rose, Penelope sighs: “You leave us no choice… we’re going to make you all better.” She later tells a confused Toni that Cheryl was sent away to boarding school in Switzerland, but really, she’s trapped in an American Horror Story-style asylum — is it the Sisters of Quiet Mercy? — with a nun assuring her that they’ll rid her of “all those unnatural thoughts.” Conversion therapy? Yep, Riverdale just went there.
CHIC, MEET DARK BETTY | Betty’s days of sympathizing with Chic are so over: The DNA results prove he doesn’t have any Blossom blood, so he can’t be a Cooper. Except Alice explains that’s because Chic isn’t Hal’s son. (So whose son is he, then? Alice claims it’s “absolutely not” F.P., but we don’t believe that, do we?) Betty declares war on Chic, waking him up by flicking a lighter in his face and informing him, “I’m going to bring you down because I catch bad men.” Chic fires back by showing her Dark Betty wig to Alice and tattling that she uses it to have sex with Jughead. Betty offers a truce, since Alice still really loves Chic, but he warns her if she ever tries to go to the cops about the dead body, her fingerprints are all over that crime, too. Chic is clearly manipulating everyone here… but what’s his endgame?
Yearbook Notes:
* I just have so many questions about that laughably awkward Andy Cohen cameo. Since when does Andy endorse political candidates? And did Andy agree to this cameo just hoping to be on set for a KJ Apa shirtless scene?
* The toxic herb found in Nana Rose’s bloodstream — tannis root — is actually a fictional herb mentioned in the horror classic Rosemary’s Baby. Boy, Riverdale does love its horror-movie references, doesn’t it?
* F.P. mentioned that Hiram tried to buy them off with a penthouse suite in his new housing development, so they could welcome back Jughead’s mom and sis Jellybean. Does this mean we’re getting closer to meeting more of the Jones family?
* That campaign song Ronnie and Josie sang together? The Schoolhouse Rock feminist anthem “Sufferin’ Till Suffrage,” dating back to 1976 (i.e. before half the Riverdale cast was born).
* Archie, surprisingly, had the week’s funniest line when he laughed at the idea of Jughead going on a hunger strike: “I’m sorry, man. It’s just… you’re always eating.”

Am I supposed to like any of the core four?… Archie is a love-whipped gofer.. Jughead is in full on white savior mode… Veronica physically assaults a student knocking him out(solid punch girl) and not only is she not reprimanded she’s allowed to run for student body president.. And then there’s Betty.. Who in addition to rudely kicking Kevin out the house like a cheap ho… Got a DNA test on her brother that just outed her mom as having a child that wasn’t Hal’s(which explains why he hates him) even after she’s told the truth.. (still didn’t apologize for dropping that bomb) she doesn’t stop she turns Cheryl’s dilemma into her own because of the “stranger” she brought in and how she doesn’t feel safe when.. Again.. Besides staring creepily and crying what has chic done… Then threatens him in bed with words and a lighter equating her emotionally and probably sexually abused brother who definitely has abandonment issues with really horrible ppl… That said big shout out.. To Josie for getting some revenge on Veronica… To chic for turning the tables in Betty.. For archie’s mom setting Archie straight.. And Ugh.. To Betty the martyr ” I cant stay in the same house as chic”… You threatened him not his fault you were so sloppy and stupid with the dead body..
But damn did that get dark at the end with Cheryl being carted off to the loony BIM for conversion therapy… Still can’t believe mom so homophobic… Still believe its something about Toni particularly that sets her off.. Cuz she is wild rude to her

I really thought the Andy Cohen cameo would be a dream sequence. It was gratingly out of place with the show!
Since the black good storyline wrapped up, this show has been going downhill fast. There had better be a good payoff for all of this nonsense or I might need to stop prioritizing it. Archie picking the lodges over his own father is ridiculous, jughead just ditched all his friends for the serpents earlier in the season. The supporting characters are much more entertaining and likeable.
Why are the writers doing this to Archie? As if he would ever choose Hiram over his dad. They’re making him the bad guy so sanctimonious Betty and jughead can look like martyrs.
I can’t believe how gullible/naive/stupid Archie is! It is beyond annoying. Love
Mary calling him out, love MR! That Cheryl SL is cray, her mom and uncle are seriously twisted and psychotic. Chic is creepy, and I am with Betty, but I feel for
Alice. Also, nice seeing Veronica getting some comeuppance from Josie and Barb (Ethyl)! Next week looks interesting, wonder who will be pinned for the murder. Hopefully someone can help Cheryl out too, I like her and Toni together, very cute.
Mary Andrews queen. Finally someone with some sense on this show.
Right now her and Fred seem like the only sane people on this show!
So, the original gang are the villains right? They’re setting them up to be killed off in the final episode of season 2 and then season 3 will return with Kevin, Cheryl, Josie and Reggie as the four stars of the show? And they’ll all be likeable characters with three dimensional personalities and meaningful, consistent and permanent character development?
If so, I look forward to watching season 3. But, I’m done watching season 2!
Reggie joined chuck in the get assaulted by a core 4 and have nothing happen to them club.. Then jughead decided he should run for president because colored dudes can’t have nothing of their own on this show.. Its why novice Archie beat chuck in wrestling.. Its why chuck got blamed for stalking Josie.. Its why archie could pull a gun on some serpents.. Its why a native American gang is run by a pretty cool older white dude.. And his obnoxious self important white savior crusader son
“people of color”
Oh nah… Writing Colored dudes wasn’t a mistake or a poor choice of words… It was A conscious decision… Wanted to convey how I felt about the treatment I was seeing on my screen…cuz “ppl of color”evokes a bit of respect.. And that’s not what I’m getting from what I’m seeing
This show has quickly gone from ‘must watch’ to ‘must DVR and maybe watch later’ this season. Archie was never the swiftest carrot in the bag, but this dumbed down version is just silly. And Greg Berlanti??? How the hell are you allowing Kevin to be so stereotyped. You have Love Simon in the theatre, yet Kevin is shown in these throw away ‘gay’ scenes with Andy Cohen and with Betty’s brother (Kevin is too good a friend to Betty than that) and constantly with his phone taking video, yet no real decent lines or story. Such a waste. I truly hope someone in charge starts to balance out the writing soon by giving Keven and Josie more to do that just prop up the other characters. The stories last season drew me in, this season is shockingly bad, and worse, incredibly lazy.
Great point about Kevin and Love, Simon (which I loved so much I saw twice opening weekend). I’m more interested in Kevin’s POV about Chic (or anything) than Betty’s.
I’m so frusturated with Archie right now, we need an explanation as to why he continues to side with the Lodges, he needs to get away from them as fast as he can and that includes Veronica, he has two loving and sane parents so why does he continue to choose Hiram over his own
Veronica continues to play the victim, she chose to get involed in her parents business, she knew about the prison
Why is Kevin such an awful friend to Betty? First he sided with Veronica when he barely even knew her, now he’s hanging out with her creepy brother and telling him all about her catfishing scheme.
Betty asked her “friend” to catfish her obviously creepy probably severely damaged most definitely abused brother even after he said he’d rather not she kept pushing… Not to mention she knows he killed someone( in self defense) but still… And when Kevin showed some understandable remorse for lying to the guy.. Betty dismisses him and kicks him out the house like a prostitute…
But yeah Kevin is the bad friend… Not Betty who accused kevins dad of being the black hood… Who knew his dad was cheating on his mom but said nothing… The capes y’all folks put on for this girl. . its amazing
First of all, I don’t “put on a cape for this girl.” Secondly, I never said Betty wasn’t a bad friend, I simply asked a question about Kevin. The two are not mutually exclusive. Betty is most definitely a bad friend to everyone, from Jughead down to Kevin. Thirdly, she didn’t kick him out of her house like a prostitute, she told him to leave because she doesn’t want her friends being taken advantage of by her “obviously creepy probably severely damaged most definitely abused brother.” And the whole reason they were catfishing him was because Betty is scared and disturbed by Chic, something Kevin most definitely knows. So in what universe is telling him all of this a good idea?
I’d say that Ethel Muggs got #Justice for Muggs and not Barb when she threw that shake at Veronica.
Who else thinks that Archie has a bigger end-game here? Going along with the Lodges against his dad and his best friend is so out of place for him. I think he’s trying to get in the Lodge’s good graces so that he can take them down for good.
That would actually be a good storyline and it would make Archie a lot smarter than what he’s been portrayed as this season and it would bring him back into the good Grace of everyone, expect for perhaps Veronica.
I was thinking the same thing, that Archie isn’t smart enough for that kind of plot. Plus as evidenced by his affair with Ms. Grundy, he’s pretty stupid and will do anything for sex.
He might not be that smart, but he’s not as dumb as he’s been portrayed lately, and why would he continue to betray everyone for the Lodges including his own father, if not to take them down from the inside
I read that Andy Cohen was a huge fan of the show and wanted to be on it. I can’t get enough of this show.. poor cheryl!
I’m confused. Alice let Betty go on a romantic getaway with Jughead, Archie, & Veronica, but was surprised to find out that Betty & Jughead were having sex????
seriously conversion what gay person is going to want to watch that storyline play out ? i know i dont and i wont b watching riverdale until that storyline is over
