Grey’s Boss on That Split: ‘Don’t Think for a Minute Their Love Story Is Over’
Fling-happy Grey’s Anatomy knows its way around hit-and-run romances, so it’s saying something that we suffered a severe case of whiplash when the show pulled Arizona and Carina (new cast member Stefania Spampinato) apart so soon after pairing them up. And as if to remove any and all ambiguity about the permanence of the breakup, Grey’s immediately sent Carina into the suddenly single arms of Owen. Well, according to co-showrunner Krista Vernoff, the end of Arizona and Carina’s affair is actually just the beginning of a longer, more complicated story arc for the characters.
“Carina’s not over Arizona,” Vernoff maintains to TVLine ahead of Thursday’s fall finale (8/7c, ABC). “People have commitment issues in the world and Arizona happens to be one of those people. And Carina also happens to be one of those people. And there’s a lot of fun to be had looking at that down the line. But don’t think for a minute that love story is over.”
Regarding Carina’s dalliance with Owen, Vernoff notes, “Carina is bisexual. I think it’s important for network television to recognize that bisexuality exists. And Arizona broke up with Carina before Carina moved on with Owen, which I also thought was important to make clear.”
For her part, Jessica Capshaw admits she’s not in any rush to see her alter ego settle down. “You’ve seen her married and you’ve seen her go through a lot of really challenging circumstances,” the actress shares, “so the idea of [her] being in flirty, ephemeral relationships might be fun.” (With reporting by Jean Bentley)
We already knew bisexuality existed. Callie was with George and had a fling with Mark before she hooked up with Fr Hahn.
I just want arizona to be happy. She deserves it.

Yeah, but they completed that arc for Callie in Season 7, which was the last time she was with a man. The remaining time she spent in Seattle was always with women. And, as far as diversity within the LGBT community on TV, it’s refreshing to see someone who identifies as bisexual. Also a good chance to see how Arizona’s views on it have evolved – recall she kind of threw Callie’s bisexuality in her face a few times like it was an issue.
She went on a date with a fireman in season 11.

Ohhh right my bad. Still though; she’s gone. Nothing wrong with a newer character that is also bisexual.

Yes we see lots of bisexual women on TV shows but almost no bisexual men. Double standards much?

Also, it would be amazing for Grey’s to introduce a main male character who is not heterosexual. Besides patients/guest stars, all diversity in sexuality for characters on Grey’s has been women.
Yeah I’ve always found it kind of odd. Did I not read one of the new male interns is LGBT though?
“Lots of bisexual women” huh? No, we don’t. Bi representation for both men and women is seriously lacking. Yes we need more bisexual men on tv, but bi women on tv aren’t the ones you should be complaining about.

Arizona has done it all. I think she misses callie and Sofia being back she might want het family back. Which would be good. Carina is just having fun and that’s the same way Arizona was and is.I still want the calzona ending Shonda promised.

First of all, Arizona needs to settle the heck down already. She’s a mature woman with a kid and it’s kind of ridiculous that she’s still running around having hook-ups. Second, I liked Carina just fine but then they had to pair her with Owen who ruins everything and everyone he touches. Now I question her judgement. Can we send Owen off to the military with Teddy? She is the only who gets him and puts him in his place. Every one else he manipulates and bullies into submission.

Yup, I agree with both of you. We have to accept that Arizona will have a romance before we get the Calzona endgame, though. I do believe the show will get Sara back eventually, but I don’t see her doing a multi-season return. I’m not even sure I see her returning for a full season. If you followed Private Practice, or at least watched the finale, I’m suspecting it could well be they get the Naomi & Sam treatment…. as in, right up to the last episode, Sam (Arizona in the Grey’s version) will be with someone else, and end it after Naomi (Callie) returns & they finally admit they belong together.
I think the Sam and Naomi ending will be for Calzona, too. And that will be very nice for a series finale. Derek can’t come back because he’s dead, but Callie is alive and it is worth it for one of the show’s big main couples to be together again.

Carina doesn’t appear to be the motherly type. Callie always wanted to be a mom. I think she will be fun for the relationship, but Arizona has Sofia for a year. Carina has excitement and fun on her mind.I think Arizona wants to be a good mom now. Remember she fought hard for her daughter. Calzona will prevail. Shonda promised.
So nothing new. Keep recycling old storylines can’t come up with something new run out of ideas. Arizona can’t be in a happy adult relationship why she gets to be stuck with Carina. What love story? They first said this was washer cycle and some fun.It was drunken hook up and only about sex now suddenly is a love story.
Can a tragic accident happen involving Carina a plane crash or bus crash since they are recycling storylines.
Give Arizona better storyline this season she deserves it after what she been through.

I just can’t watch this anymore it’s crazy. There was no build up for what was shown was lust and sex. Carina and Arizona only had one kiss in bed when Sofia surprised Arizona with the text. If they had a plan to develop Carina and Arizona why have Carina sleep with Owen?
Why Arizona can’t find someone who wants her and want to be with her not sleeping around when they have disagreements.
Arizona was in relationship with Callie who was bisexual why giving her same storyline again? Arizona being a lesbian why they can’t find another lesbian for her? If they can’t then leave her single focusing on her career and Sofia, Meredith is single again and focusing on her career.
Why they can’t come up with something new. Love triangles and hook ups they are in their 40 and tumor Olympics continue maybe chasing record.
The scenes Owen had with Carina kissing her at the hospital and at his place they revealed they had more intimacy than Carina and Arizona. After sleeping with Owen Carina has feelings for Arizona seriously?
If they are closing Grey’s Arizona deserve way better storyline than the current.
What the writers are on? Seriously a love story when did it happen ? Arizona having commitment issues are the writers for real? They should stop giving those interviews it’s getting silly. This greys reboot or whatever is getting boring.
Unlike the majority of poster here, I am totally here for a full Arizona/Carina arc with the hopes that Arizona will settle down. I loved Callie and Arizona together, but I don’t think a reunion will feel organic. I will be upset if Callie just shows up for one scene in the series finale and thats how they get back together. If they pair the characters together again, its a relationship that needs to be rebuilt at this point because it’s been so toxic. Sara would need to return for a full arc, which I don’t see happening. Even worse would be an off screen reunion. So sign me up for Arizona/Carina for now.
Disagree. The love is not lost between Callie and Arizona, and we have seen their journey of ups and downs through the years. Coming back together in the end does not require an arc. They are as organic as it gets. Arizona and Carina are what is not organic. Carina is a rebound from being ghosted, and all they are about is physical attraction. It’s hard to even take her seriously, she’s a caraciture.
Isn’t that the point of this article, saying that they are going to be developing this into more than what it currently is. Also, I can’t classify Carina as a rebound, because that would give the Minnick relationship more credibility than it deserves. But we can agree to disagree. To me after the custody battle and Callie leaving with Penny, I’m not sure I could accept them falling back to one another without some build up.
I agree with you. Arizona didn’t want to end her relationship with callie. Callie never said she didn’t love Arizona anymore. I think that Callie will show up for a serious reason and rekindle her love with Arizona. The chemistry was always strong and Shonda promised a happy calzona ending. It should happen before Grey’s ends

From what I have seen so far, not a fan of the character of Carina. Poorly written and I’m okay if she went onto another hospital for her research.
Okay so basically they had a good actress in Marika, with good chemistry with JCap, spend some decent amount of time building them up but decided that it would be fun to make Minnick unsympathetic to the audience (although I liked her just fine) because… reasons? Then they bring in some random whom they pair Arizona with because, duh, Arizona can’t settle down and seems to be interested in hook-ups only. A character, let’s add, she has zero chem with, has only shared fun and sex with for like two eps, but it’s a “love story”. Oooookay. Wish they had Burton back. Also, when is Owen’s long overdue turn to kick the bucket already?

The elevator photo is a rerun of McSteamy laughing at McDreamy’s bedroom entanglements. But it also reminds me of how shocked McSteamy struggling to understand how George had attracted Callie, Izzy etc. I think that about O.Hunt, attracting women well above his ….. I wish they’d just cut to the and send him to Altman.
