The Irrational Cancelled At NBC After Two Seasons

Dr. Alec Mercer's office hours are over forever.

NBC has cancelled The Irrational, TVLine has confirmed, meaning there will be no Season 3 for the procedural drama. Our sister site first Deadline reported the news.

The series starred The Flash and Law & Order alum Jesse L. Martin as Alec, a university professor and researcher who used his expertise in human behavior to help the FBI get to the bottom of complicated cases. The cast also included Maahra Hill As Alec's ex-wife, Marisa; Travina Springer as his sister, Kylie; Molly Kunz and Arash DeMaxi as his academic assistants Phoebe and Rizwan; and Karen David as Rose, his girlfriend.

While the show followed a procedural format, in Season 2 it also had some fun with its musically inclined cast: Martin and David, for instance, sang a duet from Little Shop of Horrors when Alec and Rose went undercover at a community theater company.

Season-to-date, The Irrational averaged 4.4 million total viewers (with delayed playback), down just 4% from Season 1 and ranking No. 7 out of the 11 dramas NBC has aired this TV season (ahead of The Hunting Party, Found, Suits LA and Grosse Pointe Garden Society).

The series' cancellation follows that of NBC's Lopez vs. Lopez and Night Court, both of which also were axed on Friday. TVLine's 2025 Renewal Scorecard has been updated accordingly. Law & Order and its spinoff Law & Order: SVU were renewed, for Season 25 and Season 27 respectively, earlier this week.
